Cross Country I' Harriers Command a Championship Season The season began as any would- with hard work and many high hopes. Coaches George Wightman and Glen Marmatz had the team members getting in shape during sixth period every day in addition to running mornings and evenings on their ovim time. The dual meet season started in September with promising results and continued through the team's biggest challenge of the year's schedule, Leigh High, who hadn't tasted defeat in four years. After this huge accomplishment, the dreams for the season soared and ambition now pointed toward a CCS championship. By the end of November, a satis- fying tally of nine wins with no losses had been earned by the var- sity runners, who went on to place second in the CCS Championship race. Senior Mike Dyer captained the team with his outstanding example. Senior Paul Gyorey helped make it an extremely successful season by taking part in many first place ties for Saratoga, which gained him the title of Most Improved of the Falcon runners. Marc Valencia was Junior Var- sity's captain and did a fine job all season. Jeff Moore's superior abil- ities were recognized by his award for being Outstanding Member of ' the So homore team p . Mark Gyorey led the Freshman team with numerous first place standings for Saratoga. Mark served as captain and took the Outstand- ing Member's award for the Frosh team. According to Coach Wightman, it was great enthusiasm, together- ness, and long hours of practice dur- ing the summer and the season that were prime factors in the champion- ship year. Coach Glen Harmatz was very influential in the team's fine per- formance and his efforts were greatly appreciated by all.
