I think my most memorable exper- ience throughout high school was where I was selected by my teachers and Mr. Zappelli to represent Sara- toga at the 1975 Girls State session. I wish every girl could have gone through what I did because I learned so much and met so many girls. Most people here don't even know what Girls State is. Basically, Girls State is run by the auxiliary of the Ameri- can Legion, and consists of 500 girls from all over California. Upon at- tending the session each girl is taught the aspects of politics and the re- sponsibilities put on a politician. Seniors Then each girl is given the chance to run different positions from mayor to govenor of the Girls State. Seniors I learned not only about the po- litical side of Girls State, but some- thing more important to me. Meeting and making friends. I knew no one when I got on the bus to go to Sacra- mento where the session was held. But by the time I left I had made many close friends. My roomate was from downtown L.A. and there was a girl from Happy Camp - a town consisting of less than 2,000 people. There were so many types of people that you couldn't help but learn from them. In closing I would like to say that going to Girls State helped me to grow up. I left home for the first time being completely on my own and having to make my own decisions.
