Though all these qualities are packed into a small frame, the man is big in our eyes. So it is with deep appreciation and love that we, the seniors of SC High, dedicate the 1969 entine to Little Tommy . . . the Little General . . . our Coach Hawkins. 4 Mr. Tommy Hawkins Winning football . . . new bleachers . . . track . . . physical education . . . basketball . . . baseball . . . life ... a “little giant” taking great strides at home, in school, and with the community — this is Coach Hawkins. “I ‘ « 4 . 5 ivv ' t •: ' ' - T ' ■!s: ' ' 7 ' i-J -r ' F- r.. S. Glover tallied for SC’s lone touch- down, and J. Craft won defensive honors. Saratoga— Elm City 28-0 Friday 13 ... a lucky day for the Rebels! Our archrivals were overpowered in front of a record-breaking crowd. B. Harrell piled up 126 yards and one TD. M. Letchworth and W. Bynum com- bined for the other three. We got BEAR MEAT! Saratoga — Coats 14-0 The buzzing Yellowjackets were no match for our inspired Rebels. Team effort was the deciding factor as we rolled up two touchdowns in the third quarter for another victory. Saratoga —Belhaven 14-13 For tlic first time in seven years, our proud Rebels conquered the Bulldogs of Belhaven. After a weak first half our offense re- turned to score two quiek touchdowns, and carry home an im- portant win. St ' - 1 % , r-: Saratoga — Chocowinity 20-6 The Indians of Chocowinity won’t ask “how” anymore. They saw and felt the toughness of our determined Rebels. The referee did too! But our team suffered a loss when B. Page was disabled for the rest of the season with a broken ankle. Saratoga — Oxford Orphanage 20-19 Hoping for win number five, our Rebels traveled to Oxford. The fans could not have asked for a more exciting game. B. Gardner became the hero of the night when he recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for the victory. Saratoga — Vancehoro 214) The Rebels proved in this game that even mud and rain can’t get us down. But J. Craft managed to bring down some Raiders. He made an outstanding 17 tackles. W. Bynum and M. Letchworth ran and passed for 83 and 33 yards, respectively. Saratoga— Robersonville 13-14 Even though they played their best offensive game yet, our boys never quite managed to get that lucky break. But defeat can’t get a Rebel down. We were just more determined to show our stuff at the next game. J..,. Saratoga— New Hope 28-19 The thrill of homecoming plus a tinge of revenge from last week’s game inspired our Rebels to prove again that they’re really tops. QB Walt Bynum led the Big D and the rest of the team to a new school record of 7-1-1. Saratoga— Farmville 14-41 2- A schools are supposed to be tough-and FarmviUe is no ex- ception. They also ran the mile, 440, 880, 220, and 100. 31 Baseball 32 The Rebels of Coach Tommy Hawkins once again displayed their versatihty as the 1968 baseball team won the conference crown. They posted a 10-0 record in the Wilson County Conference, and were 13-4 overaU. Our boys fell to Corinth-Holder, 4-0, in the district playoffs, but this year’s ballclub shows even greater promise with thirteen of the “champions” returning. Trainers 33 Junior-Senior-1 968 Evening in Paris . . . April 19, 1968 ... a beautiful “Evening in Paris”. Juniors and seniors danced, ate and thoroughly enjoyed themselves against a lovely background of sidewalk cafes, Eiffel towers, and starlit skies. This wonderful night was the result of weeks of planning and decorating by the junior class, and all agreed that their efforts were a complete success. 34 Graduation MARSHALS -Freshmen: Mike Bryant, Sally Tapp; Juniors: Joe Craft, Betty Harrell; Sophomores: Cathy Boykin, Rexannc Dawson. 35 Student Council Student Council leads Officers: Bethanne Pittman, treasurer; Joe Craft, president; Kathy Holloman, secretary; Rexanne Dawson, vice-president. 38 Under the guidance of Miss Frances Woodard, the Student Council is in charge of all school assemblies and attempts to improve student life. To be eligible for membership, a student must have taken, or be taking, a business course. Each fall Tom-Watt kits are sold to increase finances, and these funds are used to purchase equipment for the commercial department. The challenge of earning each of the three degrees provides members with an oppor- tunity to evaluate themselv es. The selling of toothbrushes gave the club its finances, and all enjoyed themselves immensely at a picnic and initiation for new members. Each boy has an opportunity to study planting and harvesting techniques and car- pentry. Our group here at Saratoga also participates in various district Uvestock judging contests. 47 Beta Club The only honor organization at Saratoga, the Beta Club consists of those students who have maintained the necessary academic average. After midterm exams, old members sponsor a school assembly and tap qualified newcomers. Homecoming is planned by this group, and during the winter the versatile Betas, and Miss Bordeaux, sponsor, dis- play their creativity in their annual brunswick stew sale. A one-hundred dollar scholarship is the club’s gift to a deserv- ing senior, and the year is highlighted by the state conven- tion. Leadership . . .
