orewon cf In publishing this, the ninth edition of the Sanoca, we have en- deavored to express our most cherished memories and educational ex- periences. We have recorded events which have been of an inesti- mable significance to us. In future years we hope that this annual will enable you to look back with fond memories and sweet nostalgia to the school year of 1957-58. Editor-in-Chief Co-Editor JKemoriam The Senior class of 1957-58, in sweet remembrance and deep reverence take this opportunity to acknowledge the life of our class- mate, Al Harrell, who passed away July 29, 1957. Al was a high-spirited, exuberant youth, always enthusiastic and eager to help those whom he could. Let us praise God for Al ' s life and remember that our Master doeth all things well. MR. C. B. THOMAS ELLIS Mascots DEBBIE GA RRIS Gfass Jhfis ory On September 2, 1954. twenty -six wide-eyed enthusiastic freshmen thronged the halls of Saratoga High School. Never before had we felt quite so important as we did then, because we were at last in high school. Little did we realize how rapidly the next four years would pass, and how soon the end of our senior year would arrive. . Miss Charlotte Bordeaux guided us successfully through an exciting and memorable first year of high school. The end of the year was climaxed in the park with a wiener roast followed by a hay ride. Our Sophomore year found us under the leadership of Mr. Loy Rogers. A few of our classmates had dropped out, leaving us twenty-three on roll. This year seven members of the class were tapped into the Beta Club. Time marched on, and we found ourselves Juniors. We were fortunate to have Miss Laura Frances Johnson as our sponsor. There were now twenty of us. This year was a most exciting one in many aspects: we became champion magazine salesmen. Then we presented our Junior play, BASHFUL MR. BOBBS, which was directed by Miss Bordeaux. Never will we forget those hilarious practices - giggles - and more - giggles! Long will we remember that day we ordered our class rings. Climaxing our Junior year was the en- chanting banquet given in honor of the seniors. The southern plantation theme was carried out at this gala occasion. Sooner than we could realize, we had reached the last milestone of our journey and became seniors. Mk. James Gay was our guide through this wonderful year. The excitement of the year began in Septem- ber when our class rings arrived. Throughout the year there was the busy hustle and bustle of our class at work on its greatest project - compiling the ninth edition of the Sanoca. In the Spring our fancies turned to thoughts of trips and commencement. How eagerly we had an- ticipated our Washington trip; it was everything we had expected plus much more. What fun we had practicing and presenting our Senior play! This, our last high school dramatic endeavor, will always be looked upon with pleasant memories. Juniors, the banquet was delightful; we shall always be indebted to you and to your sponsors for af- fording us such an enjoyable evening. High school days for us are swiftly drawing to a close. As graduation approaches we are happy, yet sad; there are smiles dampened with tears. Soon we shall hear our names being called, and twenty proud hearts will thump excitedly as we parade across the stage and receive our diplomas. Now, we are graduating and will never relive these past years, but I am sure that we will never for- get them. Now in closing, I want to express for the class our sincere thanks to all who have brought us to this year - the year of our graduation. Ann Craft Historian MAMMIE JEAN BENNETT So little doae - so much to do. ANNIE MAE BOYKIN I will sit dovra now, but the time will come when you will hear me. PEARUE MARIE BOYKIN Child of the pure, un- clouded brow And dreaming eyes of wonder. LOIS ANNETTE BURRESS Her voice was soft, gentle, and low, an excellent thing in woman. ANN HARRELL CRAFT There is no wisdom like frankness. Gfass CPoem Down the road of life we go - To take our course we know. Whatever may be our destination, Our school memories will bring consolation. Our happy days we will never forget, And the many fond memories we will cherish yet. Our hope, our pride, our life ' s ambition Will lead us on to a higher position. We shall always remember our happy past. And know the memories will forever last. We shall never forget the many rules That we were taught at Saratoga High School. Lois Burress, Poet CPropj ect It ' s August 13, 1968, a warm, sunny summer day. I ' m on a train from Richmond, Virginia, to my old hometown, Saratoga. I ' m going to attend my class reunion being held in Saratoga ' s first hotel The Raven owned by Willard ' Walston. After receiving a B.S. Degree in Nursing I accepted a position in the Rex Hospital in Richmond. I sit gazing out the window at the passing countryside as the train races by. I begin pondering over the experiences we had in high school. I shal really be glad to see my old classmates again. It was only last week that I received a letter from Ann Craft. Ann received a B.S. Degree in Nursing too, and is working in the Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She told me in her letter that Peggy Webb and Jean Bennett, two very talented beauticians, have set up their own beauty salon in Saratoga since Mrs. Shackleford retired. I understand they ' re doing a booming business. Carol Olis wrote me that after taking a four year business course, she got a job as a private secretary. After working for two years she married her boss and is very happy. I was reading a Richmond Newspaper yesterday and glanced over headlines that read, Grant Mangum Gains Outstanding Publicity as County Agent. Grant seems to have made a great success of himself in Wilson County. Several hours have passed and I hadn ' t realized I ' m almost in Rocky Mount. Jimmy Smith has started a very profitable taxi cab company. He ' s supposed to have a cab waiting for me there when I arrive. I begin to gather my belongings, and by the time I have everything, the trains enters Rocky Mount. Parked by the station I see a shiny red cab with Smith ' s Taxi on the side. The driver met me and took my things. On the way to Saratoga we were talking, and he told me Donald Webb is working for the County. He ' s keeping all the school buses in good condition. After having had to take Elton Finch ' s route so many times, Donald decided he would keep the buses from breaking down. Elton, by the way, joined the Marines after graduating from high school and signed up for a twenty year term. Now he is serving two years in Japan. He did get leave to come to the reunion, though. Finally we reached Saratoga. As we drive up to the hotel, I see another cab driving up. It is none other than Annie Mae and Marie Boykin. They graduated from the Wilson School of Nursing with top honors. They worked for a couple of years, then married and now have families. It ' s almost four o ' clock. We ' ve all been invited out to Jerry Ellis ' s for an afternoon snack. After going to college Jerry decided to go back to the farm and take over everything for Mr. Ellis. Some time after I arrive at Jerry ' s, I talked to Faye Eastwood. She was married after graduation and is now living very happily with her husband and their three children. Who is the young gentleman preparing our punch. It ' s Lester Whitley. Jerry said Lester got manied while still in college. It was a tough go, but Lester was happy. There ' s Frances Joyner. I think I ' ll go over and talk to her. She says she ' s manager of the Ladies ' department in Bill Jones ' Department Store in Wilson. Bill just didn ' t want to farm so he has a very profitable store. Well, it ' s time to go back to the hotel and dress for the reunion. I dress and go down to the banquet hall. Over in the corner is Lois Burress talking to Miss Bordeaux, Lois took a business course and came back to Saratoga to work as the school secretary. Oh, there ' s Patty MulUns. Patty liked the idea of nursing as a profession, too. She is now working as Dr. Dudson ' s private nurse in the new Memorial Hospital in Wilson. Dorothy Hobbs is talking to Patty. Dorothy went to Raleigh and got a job as a telephone operator. She likes this job because she can know everybody ' s business - that is - until she ' s caught. Well, it ' s almost time to go. I ' ve had a wonderful time. Everyone seems to be very happy living in his own world. I ' ll long remember this - our class reunion. Bonnie Howell, Pro )het loasi liOiff ancf Uesiameni As we, the Seniors of 1958, depart from Saratoga High School we leave thanks for the opportunities she has offered us, for the good times she has given us, and for the standards she has set for us. To the faculty we leave our appreciation for the help and advice they have given us and the friendship they have offered us through the past four years. To Mrs. Gay we leave our sincere thanks for all that she has done for us this year and the patience she has shown us and our hope that we will not let her down in the principles she has taught us. As we relinquish our position as Seniors, we congratulate the Juniors and hope that their senior year will be as happy and successful as ours has been.
