JW, The USS Saratoga Sailor of the Year for 4986, ET4 Steven C. Johnson. was born March 7, 1954 in El Cajon, California. Petty Officer Johnson enlisted ln the United States Navy on May 23, 4972. and attended recruit training at the Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Florida. Upon completion of Avionics and Tradesman class A school, John- son was assigned to the Training Department at NAS Ellyson Field, Pensa- cola, Florida. He served as a helicopter simulator flight instructor. ln April, 1976, Johnson reenlisted for orders to the Operational Flight Training Facility at NAS Meridian, Miss. ln October, 4984, he reported to FASTRAGRULANT DET, Cecil Field, Florida, where he served as a maintenance supervisor. In October, 1984, Johnson laterally converted to the Electronics Tech- nician CETQ rating. He reported aboard Saratoga in November, 4985. Johnson was selected as Sailor of the Quarter for the first quarter of 1986. Johnson was selected for promotion to Chief Petty Officer in Septem- ber. 4987. sovms

Unruh of his command in a ceremony held August 7. 1986 on the carrier's flight deck. The ceremony took place while the Saratoga moored alongside Charie Pier One. Mayport Naval Station, May- port. Fla. V The Saratoga's crew. along with invited guests and fam- ily. stood silently as Captain Frost read his orders accepting command of the Nlayport-based' carrier. Vice Admiral Robert F. Dunn. Commander, Naval Forces Atlantic Fleet. delivered the opening remarks. Also in attendance was Vice Admiral Edward Martin, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air Warfare. , Captain Unruh spent 16 months as the Saratoga's Co- manding Ofticer. Under his leadership. the carrier gained world acclaim for her historic Freedom of Navigation op- erations in the Gulf of Sidra and for the capture of four members of the Palestine Liberation Front for their hijacking ofthe Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro.
