Her keel was laid in December 1952 and she was commissioned on April 14, 1956 after being launched and christened on October 8, 1955. During the last 21 years, SARATOGA has served both in peacetime and war. In 1962 she patrolled off Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Middle East tensions in 1967, 1970 and 1976 kept her poised in the Eastern Mediterranean for the possible evacuation of Americans. On April 11, 1972, the SARATOGA deployed to the Tonkin Gulf for 10 months during the Vietnam Conflict. She left Mayport, Florida for her 14th Mediterranean deployment on july 11, 1977 and returned home on December 23, 1977. US CARRIER SARATOGA CCV-31 launched as an aircraft carrier. During World War II, she served in the Battle of the Solomons in 19423 sup- ported the first carrier air strike on Tokyo in 1944 and fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima. The battle-scarred SARATOGA was swallowed up by the waters of Bikini Atoll as a result of an underwater blast in an atomic bomb test, july 25, 19-46. :-if f 'Q Captain C. B. Hunter. Commanding Officer Letter From The Captain s COMMANDING OFFICER UNITED STATES SHIP SARATOGA ICV-607 SARATOGA's 1977 deployment is now history and this book will serve as a visible record of your achievements. You, the SARATOGA crew, consistently demonstrated a strong sense of duty, sacrifice and dedication that made this cruise a hallmark in carrier aviation. Two of the departments on the ship and four of the squadrons within our air wing were awarded the coveted Battle Efficiency UEHS by COMNAVAIRLANT. The Air Department, the Weapons Department, VF-31, VA-105, HS-7 and VAW-123 are proudly sporting their awards. Furthermore, SARATOGA and Air Wing THREE have flown and operated without an aircraft accident longer than any other carrierfair wing team in the history of Naval Aviation. The sacrifices you and your families made in the service of your country were indeed worthwhile. It is important that you are aware that your personal contributions were key elements in the safe and efficient completion of our mission. Throughout the months of separation from our families and friends, some have asked HWhy are we hereu and nWhy is it necessary.n The answer can be found when one looks at the over-all view of the Navy and its role in national and international strategy. The United States is dependent on foreign trade and commerce to sustain her industrial needs. Be it peacetime or wartime, about 99 per cent of international trade moves on the sea. With balanced sea power we are able to maintain a flexible national policy and protect our lifelines to other countries. The Mediterranean has been a crucible for the mixing of men's political and economic affairs since the dawn of history and it is no less so today. lt is no secret that the Mediterranean has been the target of a significant buildup of international naval forces in the last decade. We must maintain capability sufficient to deter any act of aggression in this area. The SARATOGA, on this deployment, helped make that strategy real and visible. Your records for safety, efficiency and operational readiness will not soon be surpassed. I would like to take this opportunity to salute you for your superb performance. The SARATOGA Team of 1977 provided a remarkable display of talent, perseverance and self-less devotion to duty. Good luck to you all, and may fair winds and following seas accompany each of you on your future paths. crifnl...-11 C. B. HUNTER Captain, U.S. Navy Commanding Officer A M iw 'WP ' I. In addition to maintaining the propulsion plants they are responsible for the fresh water evapo- rators, generators, air conditioning, heat, damage control and watertight integrity. With four main machinery rooms, two auxiliaries, eight boilers, a 12,000 kilowatt electrical system, two million gallons of fuel oil,and 500,000 gallons of fresh water distilled daily, the engineers keep the SARATOGA alive, moving, and its crew comfortable. Requirements for the award are stiff. It is presented annually to recognize two CVXCVW teams and one LHAfSquadron team that has surpassed all competitors in overall contributions to aviation safety. It also serves to recognize outstanding contri- butions to combat readiness, high morale, and economy of operations through safety programs which contribute new ideas in accident prevention for the general benefit of Naval Aviation. ,fu -V - e Q-A 1--uu.L.un SAFETY DEPARTME T Cdr. W M. Steele, Jr. Although the smallest onboard, the Safety Department is by no means the least important. They are tasked with carrying out safety aware- ness programs which includes the monitoring of unsafe working conditions and practices. Their posters, information sheets and Rattlesnake Report boxes were perhaps those things that made their presence known among the crew and added to a successful program. I CVW III Carrier Air Wing THREE is one of the oldest and most decorated carrier wings in continuous commission in the Navy today. Formed on the first carrier to bear the name SARATOGA CCV-35 on .july 1, 1938, it was known simply as SARATOGA Air Group, and was comprised of four squadrons. The Wing participated in allhthe major engagements in the Pacific during World War II. After the SARATOGA was torpedoed in january 1942, the three squadrons of the wing embarked in USS YORKTOWN CCV-55 and accounted for the crippling hits on the japanese Fleet Carrier SORYU during the Battle of Midway. When SARATOGA returned from the yards, the reconstituted Air Group flew back aboard and continued in the support of Guadalcanal, fight for the Fiji Islands and New Cal- edonia. During the Battle of the Philippine Sea, CAG-3 bombers sunk the japanese carrier RYUJO. In the spring of 1944, CAG-3 returned to Hawaii to join the new YORKTOWN CCV-103 as part of the Fast Carrier Task Force 38 of Halsey's THIRD Fleet for the final push. The Air Group fought in the Philippine Liberation Campaign, Formosa, China, and Indo- china strikes on Tokyo and the japanese home islands and gave air support to the Marines fighting on Iwo Jima. CAG-3 was recalled to the States in the Spring of 1945, joining in the Presidential Unit Citation awarded to YORKTOWN. ln early 1950, Carrier Group THREE was recalled from a Mediterranean deployment and sent to support U. S. Forces in Korea. From October 1950 to january 1951, the Wing flew strikes in support of all the major Korean offensives for which the Wing was awarded il Navy Unit Commendation. CAG-3 joined the new USS SARATOGA CCVA-605 in january 1958 and sailed in july of that year on an emergency sortie to the Mediterranean in support of the Lebanon Crisis. The Cuban Crisis of 1962 found CAG-3 squadrons widely dispersed among fleet carriers and bases in Southern Florida poised for instant attack. CAG-3 became CVW-3 fAttaCk Carrier Air Wingj on December 20, 1963. APYU 1972 marked the fourth time CVW-3 was called on for an emergency deployment. On 72 hours notice, the Wing embarked in SARATOGA and sailed on April 11 for the WCSI0rn Pacific. During this unscheduled ll month deployment, CVW-3 flew th0uS21ndS of Strikes against North Vietnamese targets and in support of the Army of the RepubliC of Vietnam. I CVW5 became Carrier Air Wing THREE on April 1, 1976 to reflect its multierole mission- Tl1f0Ugh the fall, the Wing carried out extensive preparations for Type Training and set a new mark during the Operational Readiness Evaluation receiving the highest grade ever awarded for Combat Readiness with all squadrons achieving uOut5tandm8 H-djective grades. On june 13, 1977, the Wing set another milestone as it became the gfst Carrier Air Wing ever to have an accident free year of flyirlgv 1088198 over 29,000 ight hours of safe operations for which it was awarded the first NAVAIRLANT Cer- tificate for Air Wing Safety. Air Wing THREE was notified on December 1, 1977 that four ref the attached squadrons KVA-105, VF-31, VAW-123, and HS-75 had been awarded tjie OMNAVAIRLANT Battle Efficiency E for the Period 19774978' 'he Second me 'f' W' THREE S fhlgllnprecedented occurrance in five years.
