SARATOGA'S HISTORY THE NAME SARATOGA IS AS OLD AS OUR INDEPENDENCE Since the memorable day of October 17, 1777 at Saratoga, New York, when the British General Burgoyne h h been a fi htin sh' surrendered his army to the American Continental forces under General Gates, t ere as g 9 Ip in the United States Navy bearing the name SARATOGA. The decisive American victory at Saratoga marked the l 'd d ower to the cause of turning point in the American Revolution, for it brought French financia ai an sea p American independence. The capture of Burgoyne's army was made possible by a small squadron of vessels on - ' ' ' B h 'thdetoit Lake Champlain in 1776 which, in defeat, had so delayed the invasion that the ritis army wi r w w n er quarters in Canada.
