TWO CENTURIES OF SARATOGA Th SARATOGA is as old as Americals independence. The first SARATOGA e name was named in commemoration of the Battle of SARATOGA which took place in . . . . f SA RATOGA, New York on 17 October 1777, and was one ofthe decisive victories o the American Revolution. The fifth SARATOGA was the first United States vessel to be launched as an aircraft carrier and served magnificently during the th1rt1es,' and World War II. SARA, as the ship is affectionately called, was constructed at the New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn, New York, and is the sixth naval ship to bear the proud name SA RATOGA. Her keel was laid in December 1952. One of the largest warships ever built, she was commissioned a ship of the United States Navy on 14 April 1956 after being launched and christened on 8 October 1955 by Mrs. Charles S. Thomas, wife of the then Secretary of the Navy. ln all respects SARATOGA is a great lady fully equipped to handle her brood of high performance aircraft, successfully accomplish her vital mission, and at the same time, support the population of officers and men who live and work within her. She and her sister ships are the keystone of U. S. Naval Seapower.
