The first SARATOGA e name was named in commemoration of the Battle of SARATOGA which took place in . . . . f SA RATOGA, New York on 17 October 1777, and was one ofthe decisive victories o the American Revolution. The fifth SARATOGA was the first United States vessel to be launched as an aircraft carrier and served magnificently during the th1rt1es,' and World War II. SARA, as the ship is affectionately called, was constructed at the New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn, New York, and is the sixth naval ship to bear the proud name SA RATOGA. Her keel was laid in December 1952. One of the largest warships ever built, she was commissioned a ship of the United States Navy on 14 April 1956 after being launched and christened on 8 October 1955 by Mrs. Charles S. Thomas, wife of the then Secretary of the Navy. ln all respects SARATOGA is a great lady fully equipped to handle her brood of high performance aircraft, successfully accomplish her vital mission, and at the same time, support the population of officers and men who live and work within her. She and her sister ships are the keystone of U. S. Naval Seapower. 'I tj. f CAPT. ROBERT F. Department One ofthe most priceless, difficult, stubborn and cantankerous PlCCes of equipment needing good shape and repair is the Lesponsibility ofthe Medical Department, namely-the human ody. The doctors and corpsmen of H Division tend to the ills ofthe VFW from headaches to major surgery, from communicable diseases to the common cold in about as professional a manner HS can be found anywheres. A full h0SPital range of services including bed care is provided the SARA man. Laboratory analysis, prescription filling, x- rays- CYS examinations, operating room, eye, CHF, UCSC' throat e . ' . . Xdminations and many other services. H Division is also concerned with general shipboard hygiene and sanitation. The corpsmen keep constant tabs on water purification, food handling and habitability standards. SARA'S corpsmen are called upon at regular intervals to give first aid instruction to repair party personnel, other divisions as part of their general shipboard training, and to demonstrate life saving procedures over WSAR-TV for the benefit of all. Corpsmen are also a permanent part of SARA'S professionals on the flight deck. Life and death often is a matter of how quickly medical aid is administered, and on one of the most dangerous and crowded airports in the world, if an accident should happen, the always present and alert corpsman is there to render immediate aid. 163 i it 1 li il I 164 .W. by Q W LT F. The aerographer's of OA Division evaluate meteorologic infor- mation gathered from satellites, ship's instruments and other networks to plot weather charts for the needs of the air wing and future operations. The men of OC Division are the cop's ofthe air. OC's air con- trollers guide aircraft to and from the SARA and keep organized and safe the constantly changing air lanes around this floating airport. OE Division personnel maintain complex and sophisticated electronic warfare systems and the shipls computers, and Ol Division's radarmen man the Combat Information Center maintaining constant watch over glowing 'scopes, tracking and identifying contacts and determining whether friend or foe, and if foe lead the fighter aircraft to them whereas the men from OP Division provide all of SARA,S photographic needs. Com- munications technicians make up OS Division, and what they Communicate is a mystery even unto them. Operations Admin and WSAR-TV is staffed by OV Division personnel and the men from OW Division monitor and evaluate electronic emissions for intelligence evaluation, whereas OX DlVlSl0n personnel staff ASCAC. They detect sub-surface threats and channel appropriate countermeasures for swift elimination. OZ Division personnel gather all available intelligence data and, with air wing and staff personnel, formulate strike plans. i it -1 M 'VTE' as it A Ct CDR W. H. Zachary . L7 LCDR D. E. The safety man is everywhere aboard SARA, on the flight deck, constantly on the lookout for violators and unsafe conditions, monitoring many of the shops and stations throughout the ship looking for bad working habits and practicesg and analyzing incoming safety data and information from other parts of the fleet and applying this information to already existing standards and practices. To some safety may look like an easy job on the surface, but there is a lot of hard and difficult work underneath. The safety man must be a diplomat in his dealings with shop supervisors, division officers, and department heads, after all nobody likes to be accused of endangering his men. For the safety man it is not enough to set standards, the violators must be converted to believe and use minimum standards for the maximum safety of all. MMC J. M. Their arsenal ranges from the simplest bullet to the more complex and sophisticated computer controlled missiles. SARATOGA'S Marine Detach- ment and Explosive Ordnance Disposal team CEODJ are also part of this departments responsibilities. The men of G Division stow, transport, and assemble most of the conventional bombs and ordnance for the aircraft of CVW- 3. Sparrow III, Sidewinder, and other air-to-air and air-to- ground missiles are the responsibility of GM Division. Like G Division, they store, transport, and assemble the mis- siles for delivery to the various squadrons. PD Division operates the ship's point defense system. Willh launchers both fore and aft, and a variety of rockets and mls- siles to choose from, the men of PD keep SARATOGA well guarded. Special weapons require special handling and the men ofW Division do just that. The EOD's are highly and specialized individuals with nerves of steel who, if the need should ever arise dispose, dismantle, or disarm live ordnance that for some reason or other 1125 malfunctioned. They are also well versed in the diving and scuba sciences and function just as well under the water aS OU it. . J 54.1 A ,WF ,k,k,x ,. .., .,.. T... , Q .. . A 1 , . V, N..
