Unofficial reports leaked to the press indicate the Sarato- ga will depart about 7:30 a.m. today. The Navy also declined to confirm or deny that the May- port destroyer Sarsfield will sail for Vietnam today. NAVY SPOKESMEN contin- ued to repeat that the Navy does not discuss operational movements. However, the Navy sudden- ly lifted a press ban at May- port Monday and media rep- resentatives were allowed to witness the loading of provi- sions at dockside. The Navy said newsmen would not be allowed aboard the Saratoga or Sarsfield and requested that naval person- nel not be interviewed. To insure compliance, re- porters and photographers Ma ,Ya were escorted by Navy public affairs office personnel. There was little doubt that the Saratoga was preparing for an extended deployment. The dock alongside the car- rier was piled high with cases of fresh vegetables being un- loaded from big trailer trucks. Fork-lift vehicles moved the cases to motor-driven conve- yor belts linking the dock with the cavernous hangar deck into which the supplies disappeared. At the same time, a steady stream of sailors boarded and departed the ship carrying cast. X , I g i ggpg y A svs- sis N595 Q i Ni Eyes, look your last! Arms, take your last embrace! Shakespeare packages off and on. Others stood on the dock saying goodbyes. SHORTLY BEFORE noon, Cmdr. Clifford E. Thompson, Saratoga executive officer ad- dressed the crew over a loud- speaker system. He reminded the men that the ship's movements were sensitive and confidential and he reminded them not to discuss the movement with anyone. Keep a zipped lip, he told them and he announced that liberty would end at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday - an hour before the usual time which personnel arerequired to be aboard. A Navy spokesmen said it usually takes about an hour after the crew is aboard for a carrier to get under way. There was considerable con- fusion regarding security at Mayport, which normally is easily accessible to newsmen. A Marine security guard approached a Times-Union photographer who had just taken the Marines picture and asked if he was the same photographer whose film was confiscated a short time ear- lier. A Navy escort quickly ex- plained to the Marine that the orders had been changed and newsmen were now permitted to take photos. A television newsman and his naval escort were de- tained by a junior officer on the guided missile frigate Standley when the newsman attempted to take pictures of the ship from the gangway. It wasn't until Mayport pub- lic affairs officer Chief Joe Sarver boarded the Standley and explained the change in Navy policy to the ship's com- manding officer that the newsman was permitted to leave the area.
