SUBPQENA t ROYAL DOMAIN OF NEPTUNUS REX On Board Ilzf U. S. S. SHRH TOGA, Flagrlzip, Aircraft, Battleforce 3 l'IE.-XR YE, ALL: It has been heralded by Mother Carey's Chickens that E ij the II. S. S. SARATOGA is to be in my Domain on 20 May, 1936, and an ' E' inspection of our High Royal Roster shows that it is high time for the sad : and wandering nautical soul of that much abused body of SEAMAN JOE GISH E to appear before the High Tribunal of Neptune. 5 THEREFORE! I order and command you to appear before me at my gl Court on the aforementioned date, to be initiated into the mysteries of if My Empire. If you fail to appear, you shall be given as food for sharks, I whales, pollywogs, frogs, etc., who will devour you, head, body and soul, as a warning to any landlubbers entering my Domain. : THEREFORE: Hear and obey or suffer the penalty. E Registered: DAVEY JUNES, NEPTUNUS REX. Secretary to His Majesty. I xznxnnxxzunannuxuluin xx urns: :annualxnnuuuuuxunuruuulxnrnuIuLuI:unanull:xunununuunlunnunununnnill Neptune: f'For 45 years, man and boy, have I heard of the man But- ler. I would meet himf' CThe Captain introduces Admiral Butler to Neptunus Rex.j Neptune: 'flt is a great pleasure after these many years to at last shake your hand. Your name has been brought to my realm repeatedly since the time you first entered the Naval Academy at the age of seventeen in the year 1891. It seems that you attracted attention during the Spanish American VVar, at lelanilag thereafter you were mentioned in dispatches in many lands. 1 had expected and hoped to meet you when you were a tad- pole, certainly as a junior Pollywog. It is possible that vou have avoided my realm, that perhaps you have had something to hide, that you feared the consequence of planting mines in my domain? I feel that this cannot or should not be the case as 1 have so often heard of your sailing the seas. Therefore, Admiral Butler, although you have neglected your duty in an outrageous manner by not coming and paying your respects to my realm before, I accept your explanation that it was due to no wish of yours, but to fateful idiosyncracies of an unjust Navy Department in allowing you so to do. lIy Emissary, Davey Jones, who was so cordially received on board the Saratoga last night, has told me of this splendid force that you command. Various of my scouts have seen aloft your officers and men in these so-called air contraptions over which you exert control. I therefore welcome you to my realm and extend my hand, thereby making you a citi- zen of my vast domain. Greetings, Admiral Butler, both I and all the citizenry of the deep, greet you as a Shellback, and I hereby enjoin all Shellbacks to hear this, my decree. . Admiral Butler: Thank you very much, Neptunus Rex, it'is indeed an honor to be so cordially received by you. Neptune: And now please excuse me, I have a busy day ahead and must see many loyal Shellbacks taken into my realm before the sun setsf, Admiral Butler: 'fBy all means, Neptunus Rex, and may your.cele- bration be a happy one. The more dignified part of the ceremony being over, the Shellbacks proceeded to administer the degrees, commonly known as the Royal Works, necessary to transform landlubbers into full fledged seagoing men. Each Pollywog was served with a Summons such as the opposite. The Royal Tribunal JUSTICE l They mock the term, but they are not hypocrites. They lay no claim to evidence, due process of law and due deliberation. They listen to only one verdict- Guilty as hell, sirln In evidence of these facts we give you two typical charges: Charge I:-In that you have hereto wilfully and rnaliciously failed to show reverence and allegiance to our Royal Person, and are thereby a vile landlubber and a pollywog. Charge II:-In that you, Donald B. Duncan, now the Navigator of this verv hne ship, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, feloniously, wilfully, ignoringly, unlawfully, wrongfully, and without justifiable cause, steered this ship into my Domain with a crew of land deserters and a cargo of all low living creatures of mudpuddles and swamps, and that you, the said Navigator, after all these many years on sea and air, failed to appear before this Royal Court and in my Domain before this year of old and fat pollywogs, 1936. SPECIMEN CHARGES You will accept most heartily and with good grace the pains and Q 5 penalties of the awful tortures that will be inflicted upon you to deter- I E mine your fitness to be one of our Trusty Shellbacks and answer to the E E following charges: : CHARGE I:-In that you have hereto wilfully and rnaliciously failed E E to show reverence and allegiance to our Royal Person, and are thereby a : : vile landlubber and pollywog. CHARGE Il:-ln that you entered my Royal Domain without an invi- E tation, and on various and sundry occasions called a port, a window, E the deck, a floor, a line, ropeg and a swab, a mop. THE RUYA URK ER BOXVS lifting and 'scending to the gentle urge of swells racing up from the under side of the world, the Saratoga steamed southward toward the Line, carrying a cargo of 1785 pollywogs in the Royal Do- main of Neptunus Rex. Ahead, stretching unto the horizon, was the battle line of the Fleet. Close astern followed the Lexington, Ranger and Lang- ley. Dimly seen in the haze to port and starboard were the cruiser and destroyer formations. Gray dawn filtered through an overcast sky to reveal that all was in readiness for the arrival on board of King Neptune, Queen Amphitrite and their Royal Retainers. At 0830 the Saratoga steamed into the Royal Realm of the Deep at Sli 05' VVest Longitude. Came then a sonorous hail from the depths. The ship hoye to and His Royal Nlajesty boarded with his party. Following the welcome by those loyal subjects of His lVIaritime Majesty, the shell- backs, the Royal Navigator was ordered to the bridge. Neptune and his lovely queen ascended the throne, their retinue assumed their places and immediately the King cried out in a terrible voice: f'The Royal VVorksl At the time the Royal Party were taking their places, the Royal Cops had formed in two lines, facing each other, that extended from the forward end of the throne dais to the bow. As the voice of His lVlajesty rang out, the Royal Heralds sounded a flourish and the first pollywogls doom was sealed. ln ominous tones the Royal Judge demanded: iiWllZIt have you to say for yourself?', Your Honor . . . , he began. 'fShut up, shouted the cops, plying their clubs right lustily. To the Royal Barber with him! cried the judge with a wave of dismissal. The cops dragged him away, a red devil prodding him from behind with Satan's traditional weapon, which in this case was typical of the Twentieth Century, being energized with electricity. Screaming with the volume of a battleship's siren, the pollywog was hustled onto the platform adjoining the tank, slammed into a chair and relinquished to the tender mercies of the Royal Barber. Here a lather of ebony hue and unsavory ingredients was applied in generous quantities to the pollywog's agonized face. Nor can one blame the barber that the wog's mouth was agape nor that a goodly portion of the lather was deposited therein. ln the meantime, the sefond pollywog had traversed the path of pain and was quaking in the presence of the Royal judge. Seeking to profit by his predecessors mistake, this pollywog said naught when asked what he had to say for himself. But there was apparently no correct course, he thought, as clubs made merry with his anatomy and cries of Say some- thing! Say somethingln rang in his ears. Searing needles shot through his body at the touch of a fork in the hands of a gleeful devil. Without quite knowing how it came about, he found himself in a chair next to the first pollywog. Then his mouth and nostrils were filled with the vile concoction from the Royal Barber's brush. He heard a splash and noted that the chair which a moment ago had con- tained his companion was now empty. But ere the significance of this flashed into his mind the world turned suddenly turtle as his own chair snapped backward. Holler 'shellbacklln voices shouted in his ears. ' I He gasped. Water Hooded his mouth. Again the cold darkness en' veloped him. Up again, his lungs near bursting. Again the commands that he yell Ushellbackf' Shell-,H he began, but his cry ended in bubbles as hands forced his head beneath the surface. Joy and a great relief suffused his being as he suddenly found himself across the after rim of the tank. Sweet freedom. But the joy died swiftly. He was being held in an inglorious position across the rim, his head and feet dangling on opposite sides. That portion of his anatomy at the greatest altitude burned beneath the blow of what seemed to his tortured mind to be thousands-nay, millions of paddles, striking with an unerring accuracy and with the rapidity of a machine gun. A At last the pollywog found himself on his feet outside the tank. But yet another horror was before him, a repetition of the double line of cops that brought him into the Royal Court. A line that to his tottering senses seemingly stretched into infinity. At the first blow of a water-soaked club, however, he became painfully aware that there was life in the old body yet. He was on his way. A moment of hours' duration passed and he was through. He grinned. lt wasnlt so bad after all. He felt a glow of satisfaction. lVhy, he was a SHELLBACK! Albeit, an aching and battered one. Scouts at the head of the first gauntlet kept a vigilant eye upon the entering pollywogs and occasionally a Hspecialw would be discovered in the act of trying to sneak through. These specials in most instances were the ringleaders of the now historic Hpollywog Rebellionl' which had occurred on the preceding day. ln every sense of the word they were given the Royal lVorks-and howl j After a lusty draught the pollywog was presented at Court, advancing along the line of the Royal Family until, after kissing the Queenls flower- like hand, he attained the supreme honor of clasping the regal hand of Twenty-one
