Thegfifth SARATOGA CCV-33 was the first ship launched as an aircraft carrier. Her most famous skipper, William F. 'Bull' Halsey, became a Fleet Admiral during World War ll and SARATOGA also distinguished herself throughout that war. The 900-foot carrier was destroyed in the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb test of july 25, I946. The fourth SARATOGA had that name for only a part of her commissioned time, from l9Il to l9l7. The 380-foot armored cruiser was destroyed in the Philippine Islands in l94l - three years after she was stricken from the list of active Navy ships - to prevent her capture by the Japanese.
