Naval Academy in l943, later serving aboard the USS MOBILE CCI.-633. After receiving hjs wings as a Naval Aviator in I9-15, he served with several fighter squadrons and as air wing operations officer and LSO. He became a Test Pilot in the Tactical Test Division, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, Maryland. later to serve as Maintenance Officer and Executive Officer. Fighter Squadron l9l. Captain Graning saw duty as Aircraft Handling Officer and Assistant Air Officer aboard USS YORKTOWN and then returned to the Naval Air Test Center as Assistant Director of the Test Pilot School. He attended the Naval war College and later introduced the F-4 PHANTOM to the Pacific Fleet as Commanding Officer, Fighter Squadron II4. A tour as Commander, Air Wing I4 followed. After two years with the joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington he assumed command of the USS CHEMUNG lAOi30i. He later served as Chief of Staff and Aide to the Chief of Naval Air Advanced Training at Corpus Christi. After a tour as Commanding Officer. NAS Patuxent River. he was assigned to Commander.
