The symbol was born in battle, during the War of 1812. Four British men-of-war were engaged on Lake Champlain by a smaller American fleet. Saratoga was the flagship. A British cannonball smashed a coop, releasing a sailor's gamecock. The startled bird flew to the rail and crowed lustily and defiantly! Taking the cock's crow as a sign of good luck, the men fought with renewed courage and won the battle. Though the sailing ships are gone, the spirit of the fighting cock lives on as an inspiration to the men of today's Saratoga.
