DEFENSE GF FREEDO Freedom is defined as A state of being free, Liberty, Independence . . but in actuality freedom is inate in every man, given to him by his Creator as his birth- right to choose right from Wrong and take the respon- sibility for this free will and intellect that God, in his infinite wisdom, gave to man. Freedom, then, is a state of mind, and no man or power on earth has ever been able to destroy man's freedom. From the beginning of time the forces of evil have struggled to suffocate and to control this power. You can censor manis speech. You can imprisonhim. You can deprive him of his material possessions that he and his forefathers have rightfully earned and retained. You can endanger his family, home and country, but man's right to think cannot be destroyed nor can it be controlled. The USS Saratoga will keep ever vigilant, patrol our waters and will be ready at all times to give security against this fear. The chapters of this book are dedi- cated to This Great Lady and to the courageous men who ride her decks, for their very great part in the defense of Freedom.
