Freedom, then, is a state of mind, and no man or power on earth has ever been able to destroy man's freedom. From the beginning of time the forces of evil have struggled to suffocate and to control this power. You can censor manis speech. You can imprisonhim. You can deprive him of his material possessions that he and his forefathers have rightfully earned and retained. You can endanger his family, home and country, but man's right to think cannot be destroyed nor can it be controlled. The USS Saratoga will keep ever vigilant, patrol our waters and will be ready at all times to give security against this fear. The chapters of this book are dedi- cated to This Great Lady and to the courageous men who ride her decks, for their very great part in the defense of Freedom. ,,.f ,v-'W' if ...W-A . , X sw. For three months, the ship underwent a gruelling schedule of grind- ing, cutting and fitting. Old equipment was renewed, and outdated equipment was replaced. For the crew, the yards meant that the long hours of sea routine were replaced by the longer hours of hard and dirty, but necessary, refitting. For the ship, it was the agony of a mammoth operating table. Mechani- cal casulty, fire and flooding are all repaired or brought under control by these guardians of Sara- toga's safety. Although modern developments have greatly lessened the inherent danger of fire rooms and machinery spaces. descendents of the early pio- neers of steam must be at all times able to cope with any emergency. This ability requires extensive knowledge garnered through countless hours of drills and training sessions. As in any com- munity, the Saratoga, with her crew of 3,600 men, has her corner drug store, the family laundry and dry cleaning shop, the home town barber shop-where the world's problems are solved daily, and the cobbler shop where half soles and a good shine will meet any Captain's inspection. Can you imagine a community restaurant catering to 3,600 men, three meals a day? The SARATOGA with her 60 cooks and 700 mess cooks turn out l2,000 meals a day. She has her own Bakery Shop, makes her own bread, and has her own butcher shop that supplies 4,600 pounds of meat a day. Well fed? Thanks to these men, indeed she is! lt is no wonder that the supply department is one of the largest on the ship. With a staff of 500 men, bookkeepers, file clerks, and general office personnel are steadily pushing pencils, pounding machines and proving figures for the accurate operations of the Sara. Every item from carbon paper to engine parts are filed and stocked by this department. Y i I . . i i -2 VA-34 The mission of a light attack jet squadron, designated as VA, is to seek out and destroy all targets assigned. This mission encompasses various means of attack. Our ver- satile aircraft, the A4C, is capable of utilizing various delivery techniques, nuclear and conventional, to accom- plish this mission. Since one of our responsibilities is the employment of nuclear weapons, the squadron is constantly striving to perfect the delivery techniques used in the delivery of those weapons. One of the most common deliveries is the Over the Shoulder maneuver, commonly called the Idiot Loopf' Other deliveries utilized are the loft and low level attack. Another vital role of the squadron is that of conventional weapons employment. This necessitates the pinpoint delivery of such weapons as the Bull Pup guided missile, rockets, and various bombs. Those deliveries are utilized during day and night strikes against enemy targets and in conjunction with close air support of our own forces. Last but not least is our capability to extend our combat range through the utilization of inflight refueling. This is accomplished by one aircraft carrying the tanker package which enables him to deliver fuel to other aircraft. This tanker capability of the A4C enables us to refuel all other naval jet aircraft thus extending their airborne range. Qs ,Q r IA 34 The Navy model A4C SKYHAWK is a jet propelled, single place monoplane with a modified delta-planform wing, and 1S manu- factured by the Douglas Aircraft Company, El Segundo Division. Designed as a high performance, light weight attack aircraft, it mounts two 20-mm cannons internally, carries a variety of external stores, and is capable of operating from either a carrier or from a shore base. The A4C is known as the world's smallest atom bomber. It is the smallest carrier based plane used by the U. S. NAVY. Since the wing span is only 27.5 feet, it does not require wing folding found on other carrier based aircraft. The A4C is 43 feet in length and 15 feet in height. The gross weight averages 11,000 pounds empty, depending upon configuration, to 22,500 pounds fully loaded. Powered by the Wright J65-W-16A turbojet engine, producing 7700 lbs. of thrust, the A4C is capable of speeds .up to 600 mph at algituiies in excess of 40,000 feet. The range of the A4C is 1400 miles and may be extended through the utilization of infhght re ue ing. Qin. 30? wal Moving out. , 3, . EPM.. VA-35 ATTACK SQUADRON THIRTY-FIVE, known as the Black Panthers, is the third oldest carrier squadron in the Navy. Commissioned at NAS Norfolk, Virginia on 1 July 1934, the Black Panthers were one of two squadrons formed to size aboard the newly commissioned USS RANGER, -4 . From the date of commissioning until December, 1941, the squadron served in the Pacific, and during the pre- Worl War II period flew the BG-1, SBQU, and the SBD-9. During World War II the squadron was embarked in SARATOGA, ENTERPRISE, and YORKTOWN. It sup- ported the Doolittle raid on Tokyo by providing escort patrols and search aircraft. The squadron participated in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, and the landings on Guadalcanal. After a training period with a new type of aircraft C The Helldiverj, the squadron returned to action on YORKTOWN for strikes on Manila Bay, Luzon, Leyte, Formosa, Hong Kong, Saigon, and merchant shipping in the South China Sea. The final actions during World War II were the strikes against For- mosa and Tokyo in February, 1945. During the Korean War, V A-35 provided close air support, armed reconnaissance, and strikes against enemy troops and equipment. In 1958, V A-35 aircraft from the SARATOGA were among the first to reach Lebanon during that political crisis. The squadron participated in the Cuban crisis operations of 1962, and was stationed at McCalla Field, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the months of October and November, and was aboard the SARATOGA in December. Their history begins as the old Fighter Squadron 102, flying the F9F-5 during the Korean con- flict. Shortly after being redesignated VA-36 in 1955, the ROADRUNNERS transitioned into the F9F-8 Cougar. During this period they conducted their operations from the decks of various carriers before making their per- manent home with the Carrier Air Group THREE aboard the USS Saratoga CCVA 603. During the 1958 deployment to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a total of seventeen pilots earned forty-four 's for battle efficiency, and were duly rewarded by receiving the Airlant for jet light attack squadrons in fiscal 1959. During this same period the ROADRUNNERS earned the distinction of being the first jet squadron to become night carrier qualified using the new mirror land- ing system. To cap this, VA-36 then conducted the first night-dive bombing competitive exercise on record for jet squadrons. Soon thereafter, they received the first of their new A4 Skyhawks, the latest version of which they now fly. Returning to the United States on 25 October 1963, the ROADRUNNERS completed their fourth consecutive Mediterranean deployment with the USS Saratoga and Carrier Air Group THREE. With their A4C's, VA-36 possesses the capability of devas- tating nuclear destruction, or poses an effective close-air support threat in a brushfire type war. With their sights set on enhancing their operational readiness, the ROAD- RUNNERS are continually polishing, developing, and refining their strike techniques to make them an even more formidable member of Airlant's fighting team. ,fD5 f r E L I L F Ln .vvf - vi V, if 1 E 1 a -1. Shortly thereafter the squadron was moved to NAS, QuODSGt Point, Rhode Island, and designated as Composite Squad- ron Twelve. In 1956, the squadron was re-designated to its present title and returned to Seaplane Hangar One, NAS, Norfolk, in September 1962. 4 The early warning aircraft flown by VAW-12 have included the Grumman TBM Avenger and the Douglas AD Sky- raiderf' In January 1960, the first WF-2 Tracer, more commonly known as the Willy F udd, arrived and since that time has replaced all other aircraft in the squadron. VAW-12 has a complement of over seven hundred officers and men and over forty aircraft. Providing detachments for both attack and anti-submarine aircraft carriers accounts for a large number of the squadron men and aircraft, with a nucleus of training personnel stationed at NAS, Norfolk. The primary mission of VAW-12 is to provide early warn- ing radar information to the fleet, thus earning the name THE EYES OF THE FLEET. Spending long hours on patrol far away from the carrier as an airborne combat information center is just one of the many and varied capabilities of the FUDD and the men who fly it. Radio and radar relay, interceptor control and surface surveil- lance are also included in the spectrum of function for which VAW-12 detachments have become well known throughout the fleet. p S Men loading bombs on A11-I 168 III Ri' 115 f,,,,,, W, mfg? :xx F-f' I,5fNpr ,n.f'f'Nf A mb' -ll .-- '1 Engine Mech. Castles from the Middle Ages and tenements of the working Classes are encircled by vineyards and groves while picturesque church steeples inspire the serenity and security that make the everyday laborer a happier individual. A city where ships, machinery, glass and wine are produced there breeds a hearty type of man. There is something in this city every- one can enjoy--each to his own taste. At the close of day when the worker trudges wearily home, his head rises up to the hills and the beauty surrounding him makes tomorrow another day for which and in which to live. -4. ,T jp, 4 I f, ' 'tty'- IH v, I8 1 I , IQ-f'.. 1 AMERICAN STYL 'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the ship Not a sailor was stirring, not even the Skipf' 1 .- , -. ,,.,,,,.,.- .-,. .. When a sailor went ashore there he saw what he had not expected to see, a dynamic, fast moving city. With the noisy automobiles and trolley cars, the traditional character was somewhat dented. True, the Flamengo dancers were there, the bull fight was there, but it was a different Spain than many expected. Old traditions mixed with new innovations to reveal an ancient people who had weathered many conflicts and were now emerging. Good black coffee, inexpensive rum, and Havana cigars were pleasant to the taste and dark myster- ious women a charm to the eye. Barcelona offered many hours of leisure to the tired sailor. Her people began their working days very late and carried their relaxation into the early hours of the morning. Prices were low and satisfaction high. This was easily voted one of SARATOGA's best ports. 4 43 ti-L WMIUIB JJQXQT as. ,'.v , . X xt. -,Q , . 'a,f j- fAy. ., p , -gt .., . It offered SARATOGA sailors a chance to see a center of that country's agriculture. From the ship one could see the Vast fields of Valencia orange groves stretching out across the flat country from the sea. Its crowded but colorful market was one of the more unique sites of the cruise. Some SARATOGA men were able to visit a small village several miles outside of Valencia. With a Roman theatre on a hill above it, the village of Sagunto gave a more intimate View of Spain. ' l.... I ., , I i rd ' 1 ll. . K - H u i 5 'ans - - 'Mitts' s J t...,.,., .,.. Our goal is to endeavor to establish faith and trust on a people to people basis in each foreign port. Even when language barriers present obstacles to verbal communication, reaching and winning the hearts of these people across the seas can be done by warm smiles, sincere hearts and little kind- nesses. - While our elders have seen discord and mistrust over the years, a little time spent in friendly gas- tures and in getting to know each other can reap great rewards. The hearts of the young are easily reached by sin. cerity. Simple acts of friendship can plant seeds of peace and harmonious relations which can grow, as the children grow, to foster peace among the wor1d's people.
