AfTer The Training eriod in The Caribbean SARATOGA operaTed ouT of her home of MayporT P . . wiTh The U. S. Second FIeeT, and Then began making preparafions for her forThcoming MediTerranean cruise. Then on AugusT 15, 1959, she began her Third Trip across The ATlanTic and ioined, for The second Time, The SIXTH FIeeT, now under The com- I' d mand of VADM G. W. Anderson, Jr. VADM Anderson had been re ieve as Commander Carrier Division SIX on AugusT 5 by RADM T. H. Moorer. SARATOGA was under The command of CapTain John J. Hyland, who had relieved CapTain MaTTer in OcTober 1958. During This depIoymenT Cap- Tain Hyland was relieved by CapTain Allan F. Fleming in November 1959. The successful cruise came To an end when SARATOGA sTeamed inTo her home porT in MayporT, Florida, on February 26, 1960. AfTer approximaTeIy a monTh of resT, IiberTy and leave for The crew, she wenT To The New York Shipyard for mainTenance work on her well deserving hull. AfTer her yard period, ThroughouT The summer monThs of 1960 SARATOGA operaTed wiTh The U.S. SECOND FIeeT wiTh in-porT periods in Nlayporf. Early in AugusT in 1960, SARATOGA received orders To reioin The SIXTH FIeeT in The MediTerranean and bolsTer America's readiness. SARA- TOGA IefT for The MediTerranean on 22 AugusT. She enTered The MediTer- ranean on 1 SepTember and deparTed on 5 SepTember for The NorTh ATlanTic. There, norlh of The ArcTic Circle, she parTicipaTed wiTh oTher forces of NATO in operaTion SwordThrusT I and II. In OcTober SARATOGA enTered The MediTerranean and reioined The SIXTH FIeeT where she com- pIeTed her six monTh depIoymenT. The cruise came To an end when SARATOGA arrived in her home porT of MayporT on 25 February 1961. SARATOGA had proved herself once again a ready warship and sTrong arm of America's defense by com- pleTing her depIoymenT as scheduled, in spiTe of a serious fire, in one of her engine rooms on 23 January 1961. The fire, Though broughT under conTroI expediTiousIy, Took seven lives. CapTain Roger W. Nlehle, who had relieved CapTain Fleming in November 1960 commended The crew on iTs spiriT and proven baTTle-readiness. AfTer a few days in MayporT, SARATOGA sTeamed To The Norfolk Naval Shipyard in PorTsmouTh for repairs and alTeraTions. AfTer her yard period, SARATOGA Took on her ammunifion aT Norfolk and Then, afTer a sTay aT her home porT of MayporT, Florida, commenced six weeks of exTensive Training exercises in The Caribbean. AfTer These exercises, SARATOGA reTurned To MayporT where, on AugusT 23, 1961, The Commander of Carrier Division SIX, Rear Admiral Frederick J. Brush, embarked along wiTh his sTaff. RADM Brush relieved RADNI D. L. Mc- Donald as COMCARDIV SIX in July 1961. AfTer operaTing in The ATIanTic wiTh The SECOND FIeeT, SARATOGA deb: 'ed from MayporT, Florida, on 28 November 1961 and deployed A '50U Tour of CIW' The SIXTH FIeeT in The MediTerranean.
