Jack Cooney, Bonar Starrak, Harvey Guilford, asistant couch. lVilhur 'l'urner. 1941 is the year to be well remembered in all of the hearts of the Sarasota sports fans. For the first time in the history of the con- ference, the Sailors walked away with the base- ball championship. The tournament was played in Bartow with the Sailors first playing and soundly defeating the Palmetto Tigers, 7 to 0. In the semifinals the Sailors defeated Arcadia 6 to 5 and in the same day they played the finals against Bradention to whip them 6 to 4. winning the baseball championship for 1941. The title for the district championship was thrown into confusion when the Hillsborough team defeated the Sailors in a return game, put- ting Sarasota in a tie with Hillsborough and Bradenton. In the play-off Hillsborough defeat- ed Bradenton, then Sarasota defeated Hillsbor- ough 9 to 3. This victory gave the Sailors a right to compete in the state tournament held in Miami, May 8. However in this meet, Fort Worth defeated Sarasota 9 to 5. In the regular season the Sailors won nine games and lost three.
