CHARLES LADD Our cherished friend and teacher, whose loyal companionship has so greatly enriched the lives of each of us during our high school days. IN MEMORY OF.. A sincere person and conscientious teacher, who served so capably as a member of the faculty for many years. As graduation draws near, we cannot lielp but feel the loss of one who was loved by all. - Mn. STANLEY WORTHINGTON Whom we all knew and cherished as our school physician. His likeable per- sonality and genuine interest in each of us will make him live always in our hearts. Dn. CHARLES HAs1uNs AND WITH COUNSEL FROM MR. CHARLES T. COWAN Dear Seniors: It is my sincere hope that each of you, according to his ability, has richly developed basic academic skills, including the habit of critical thinkingg and basic social skills, including those involving democratic par- ticipation with many individuals and groups. As you approach the completion of this phase of your formal learning, I am sure you are convinced that education does not end here, but is truly a continuing, expanding, all life process. The members of this class will strike out in many directions. Try to relate your intended vocation to areas in which you have actual or potential ability, areas concerning which you are truly interested, and from which you can derive real stimulation and satisfaction in the years to come. Your chosen religious faith can be at once a pillar of strength, and a lifelong inspiration. You will further enrich your lives through wholesome recreational interests and participation in other challenging avocational fields. Each of us has been thrice blessed by inheriting a great nation, a wonderful way of life, and an o por- tunity to broadly participate in determining its pattern. One of our basic aims at school is to help you build knowledge, skill, and above all, determination to be an active, contributing participant in the process of all levels. In my opinion the justification of our aim will be in some proportion to how seriously you respond to such service as a duty as well as a privilege. I am confident the members of this class will contribute in many ways, and in important measure to the maintenance and the strengthening of our democratic processes. You have completed most of your formal responsibilities here, but we trust you will always remain part of Saranac Lake High School. Keep us informed of your progress and return to see us when it is possible. With every good wish, Seniors, for your continued success and happiness. Sincerely yours, CHARLES T. PROPHECY Do you remember the Essay contest sponsored by Swift's Swiss Sausage Company? The prize was a free trip to Switzerland for the lucky student and the teacher. For some strange, unexplainable reason, every student in the Class of '49 from the Saranac Lake High School tied for first place. Well, anyway, we ended up with all of us going to Switzerland, including Mr. Young. Once having reached there we decided, with the consent of the company, to extend our visit indefinitely. In the years that followed, our class really accomplished something. Let's take a stroll down the cobblestone road of a typical Swiss village, and see for ourselves. My, I see David Richardson and Mary Hayes, Olympic skiing champions, entering a lodge. Let's follow them and see what's inside. To our surprise we see that Bill LaVallee and Ned McClatchie are man- agers of the hotel. They started as elevator boys and slowly worked their way up. Elva Purpura, B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., is now a famous writer. She re- cently published Pu1pura's Pumpernickel Pickle Book. Goshl What a far cry this is from her high school days as School Bell editor. Leaving Elva, we find Bob Cervo and Dick Brewster sitting behind the desk. Dick dusts the desks daily and Cervo checks the clerks' checks. Donald Estes and Dick Rawson, the bellhops, are dashing up to their old classmates, hands extendedifor tips! They seem to forget that the Senior Tea bill was actually paid. Jerry Carter and Martha Bedell are known as the shape and the voice. Jerry has the shape and Martha, the voice. They are the principal enter- tainers at the lodge. They entertain each other. Bob Sussey is the proprietor, but at present he is upon the roof repairing his B-4. While flying, he mistook his large lodge for a runway, and since then he has had wheels for chandeliers. Buddy Drutz and his famous band, The Sweet Swiss Swingers, are booked to play here for the season. Mary Sue LaVallee plays the Alp horn, Alan Edelberg, the Matterhorn, Mary Jane Higgins, the dillpickle-o, and Phyllis McCormick, the shoe horn. All Phyllis seems to get out of it are footnotes. Out in the kitchen we find Lionel Arlan and Walt Ryan, world famous chefs, specializing in pastries and bread. Their motto is We knead your dough. Carolyn Clark, Helen Downs, Bernice Hough, and Lillian Foote, our little homemaking girls, are their assistants. Since all they can make are hors-d'oeuvres, the U. S. is rushing special CARE packages to their emaciated customers. Eugene White is a famous hunting and fishing guide. He recently took first place in the annual alpine Tall-Tale contest. We wonder if he could have developed this ability while the rest of the class slaved over Monday compositions back in 315. N x f x X - .Qu F .Mali xb -1 if .,,: 1.4 4 fe i,- .. Among them are those talented artists, Bea Goldberg and Bertha Wood. They are unpopular with the janitor because they are always drawingA-hot water. The famous entertainers-Bill Stout, Donny Maple, Bob Arnold, and Anna Oberst-are back in Switzerland vacationing after the Broadway production of The Wizard of UZ arranged, directed, produced, and financed by Mr. Murphy. Mr. Murphy lost all of his money but never lost Uzl Ned Pendergast, now a member of the Berfle Bomber's soccer team, is vacationing with his pretty wife, the former Donny Maple. Skip Cassavaugh, Jack Sweeney, Gary Holway and Jack Disco, also members of the team, are staying here. They are feeling mighty low, since they are in the cellar of their league. Beverly Sawyer is head of the Swiss Free Library which she herself established, financed and furnished with books. Her most frequent patron is Professor Donald Pierce, who is doing research on Animal Welfare Society methods used in Switzerland. Betsy Godson, now Arthur Murray's assistant, is trying desperately to teach her Swiss students how to Samba. The talented musician, Mary Tierney, furnishes the music-compliments of Tom Edison. Francis Macy and Jack McKillip have opened a watch repair shop so they can have lots of time on their hands. Dick Menga, now a famous dairy specialist, keeps them busy with his grandfather's alarm clock. Since it was re- paired, the alarm is so powerful, it makes the cows tremble: result--milkshakes. George Owens and John Martelle are attending the annual firemen's convention which is sponsored this year by Arson Welles. Walking into the office of Jack Lawless, hotel private eye, fthe office really belongs to Mary Ann McKillipD we find Palmyra Ransom, Lois Favaro, and Odile Connor. They are busily typing up the report of his latest assignment, the case of Who hung the hangnailf' All Jack has left are the clippings. Joan Conlin and Rita Acrivlelis have come to Switzerland to act as cheerleaders at the Olympics. They have been cheering and cheering but the old owls just don't seem to give a hoot. Herbert Davis is running the local radio station. At 7 oiclock each evening comes that familiar call, Prepare your pad and pencil for Perry's puzzle program. This is sponsored by Bongo Booth's Baby Bassinet Blankets, Inc. At 8 o'clock they bring you that popular horse opera, The Lone Stranger, starring Bernard Deissler as the stranger. Information Please is the next program on the air, with Ruth Sporck as the master of ceremonies. Her assistant, Valda Ryan, picks people from the audience to ask questions. These questions are directed to the panel which is composed of Joyce Saumier, Dorothy Sweeney, Mary Kerr and Leah Swinyer. The program is continually inter- rupted by the stage hands, John Martelle and Francis Foote, who blink the lights just to get in on the act. Bob Hickok and Jack Finnegan are operating the farm which supplies the lodge with Swiss butter. They leave the farm with cream, and reach the village with butter. In case you are wondering how this is possible, Finnegan's truck is familiarly known as The Big Churn. Janice Sperry, Betty Murray and Jean McGraw have started a home for decrepit mountain goats, and are studying their conditions. Things were running smoothly, until some old rams started horning their way in. Jean Gladd and Frank Lezak, who are running a hair dresser's shop, are still trying to figure out why their cus- tomers are losing their hair. Anyway, they sell hair restorer, and with each bottle they give short bobs. So far, they have gotten rid of Bob Jackson and Bob McKillip. Mary Kosich is superintendent of a girls' school. Her assistants are Esther Brown and Pat Tyler. The faculty includes Veronica Lashway as physical instructor, Jane Carroll, who handles English, and Dolores Roche and Marilyn Rudolph, who teach commercial subjects. Betty Bryant is lecturing on the finer arts to her admiring students. Switzerland is also noted for its outstanding hockey teams. Comprising one of their finer teams, which is man- aged by Roger Stephenson, we find Harold f'Legs James as goalie. There is only one major problem with Legs -he is afraid of the puck and hides behind the net. Bob LaPlante and Howard Thompson play defense positions. Arnold Woodruff and Leonard LeClair are the star forwards. We can't forget Wilmer Lewis. He's the stick boy. Bob Lyeth, the referee, gets hit by the puck so much, he has acquired the nickname, Lumpy. Recently they had their toughest game, and were defeated by June Hicks' all girl team by the record-breaking score of 100 to 99. This sensational sextet included Maureen Sugar Butler as goalie, and Joyce Rocket,' Kenny and Adele Spike,' Johnson, defensemen. The forwards were Connie Sparkplug Martin, center, Thelma Streak Rieck, and Audrey Killer Lobdell, right and left wings. This girls' team was so terrific, it made the boys' team seem like a locomotive-all loco . . . but no motive. NOTICE: The Class of '49 will hold a tea in commemoration of its 10th anniversary at the Saranac Lake High School. All faculty an alumni are urged to attend. Upon entering the gym a few days later, I was met by my former classmates. The sight of the old familiar gathering place and 1 my school chums brought back many pleasant memories. The happy moment finally arrived! We were at last the upperclassmen of the second floor. My, how proud we felt as we claimed junic Study Hall as our own. That year we gained the prestige that only Freshmen can appreciate. To start the Class of '49, we elected Mauree Butler, President: J ack Lawless, vice-president, and Billy LaVallee, secretary-treasurer. We were fortunate that year to secure th assistance of Miss Baker as class advisor. Those were the days when J ack Lawless became famous as a result of his compositon, What I Would Do If I Were President. Alsi that year Skip Cassavaugh and J ack Sweeney began their athletic careers. We'll always remember our first class dance, the Freshman Hoy In spite of the trouble we had with refreshments, the dance was a huge success. Everything was running smoothly until the tragic da when Mary Kerr broke her back while tobogganing. The next year was a big disappointment for us. We lost our position as leaders of our floor. We were, however, assured of success aftf Ned Pendergast was elected President, Howard Thompson, Vice-President, Donny Maple, Secretaryg and Mary Bancker, Treasurei A glimpse of Mrs. Godson, who so ably guided us through the best Daisy Mae Drag that this school has ever seen, recalled to m mind this most colorful affair. Remember the clever decorations that were taken from the Li'l Abner comic strip? Our next activit was the Soiree which wound up our program for the year. Certainly everyone recalls Mary Bancker at the Varsity Dance dressed in new: papers. Many will remember how later that year Bill Stout had his first love affair. Does that old familiar phrase, Sit ye down, my friend and study, bring back those memories of Mr. Shineman's heart to heart talks in Geometry class? Remember the time Ruth Sporc came running into room 314 to see Martha Bedell, exclaiming, Murphy, darling! ? We will never forget the shocked expression 0 Mr. Murphy's face until he learned that Martha's nickname was Murphy. One-half of our high school years had passed by, but th best were still to come. The sparkle of my ring diverted my thoughts to our busy Junior Year. First of all, I recalled the fun we had choosing them, and th anxiety we suffered while waiting for them to arrive. Why, even the Seniors were envious of our superb choice. This year when Mi: Forth went away we lost one of the best friends and kindest counselors we have ever known. Her English classes are gone but not foi gotten. The Happier We'll Be, our Junior Play, brought forth the hidden talents of our class. We'll always remember Joan Conlinf the spoiled brat, Lionel Arlan's bi-focals, Bill Stout's hearty laugh and Marlene Southard's eternal knitting. Do you remember that hot night, June 30th, 1948, when Donny and Ned led the grand march? That was the night of our Prom. Ho' could we ever lose thought of the fun we had decorating for it? Our glass pyramid was the center of attraction. We'll never forget th undertaker's grass we used for the center of the floor. The affair turned out to be such a huge success we had to bring in more table and chairs. This was the climax of a colossal year which saw Donny Maple as Presidentg Walt Ryan, as Vice-Presidentg Anna Obers Secretary, and Skip Cassavaugh, as Treasurer. Then, at last, we really ruled the third floorg we were seniors. As the top class in the school, we elected Donny Maple, as Presiden Lionel Arlan, as Vice-President, Anna Oberst, as Secretary and Frank Lezak, Treasurer. Do you remember Mr. Wilson's famous saying Don't forget your report cards Monday, Will the last person in each row please take roll call? and 'Tm getting out my list nov and I'm going to take names? U This gathering recalled to my mind our own Senior Tea at which we met our teachers as compeers. Looking around I saw Gary Holwa standing on the foul line talking to his old classmates. This reminded me of his Senior year 10 years ago, when he led the basketba team to the play-offs, winning for himself the distinction of top scorer in the Northern League. The first thing we did, was to elect Phyll McCormick and Anna Oberst, as co-editors, of the Canaras. ' Thinking of this I remember all the work as well as fun that went on i those meetings, and how patiently Mr. Murphy saw us through to the deadline. Immediately after getting the year book staff under way, we started work on the Senior Play. Thirty-three members of the Senim class made their debut in the extravaganza, Beauty and the Beef directed by Miss Ruby Baker and Mr. Harold Young. I think no one in the cast will ever forget Lionel Arlan's interpretation of the witches' curse from Macbeth. How well we'll remembe Miss Baker shouting: Mary Ann, make your entrances on time, You people in the second act, learn your lines, and Robert McKilli1 don't beat that drum so loud! Ever with us will be the recollection of Bob Arn0ld's towering hat and his famous line Big City Gal? We'll always hold in our minds Donny's big scene in which she told Billy Stout CBeefJ off with such realism, that he unexpectedly ff into the trunk. Remember Anna Oberst's sigh, Oh, Foggy, as she gazed into Bob Arnold's eyes? Do you recall the razzing the local Democrats took from the Republicans in the American History debate? For the first time in fol years the Senior class was really divided. No one will ever forget our Christmas party. Practically everybody received one of Li'l Abner's little pets for a present. Remembl Mr. Wilson's mad dash from study hall with Mistletoe Butler at his heels? Guess what happened?-! All too soon, Christmas vacation ended and we were back for the midyear exams. No Senior will ever forget Mr. Murphy's compulsol invitation to his History party. Everyone was invited to attend and refreshments fthe testj were served. Even our parents will have recollection of that. Didn't the time fly as the snow began to melt and the baseball and track teams started their spring training? It was then that tl Band and Glee Club began rehearsing their programs for the Potsdam Festival and spring concerts. Next came our Canarases and ho glad we were to get them. Before we knew it the year was rapidly drawing to a close and we found ourselves preparin for graduatio In rapid succession came the J une Festival, Sacred Concert, Senior Banquet and the long-awaited Commencement. That night as v walked down the aisle, we were anxiously looking forward to the future, but we were sad at the thought of leaving our friends and joj of high school days. Yes, we have had lots of fun, but as the old saying goes, all good things must come to 'THE END.' 32 'ur VSYYQ 1 '1,,1, Soon 'x , ,ew-:gf 1.1 I 1 P1 . , , ,G,A,,Ii.1G' XI - 1- In '1 1 ' 65 ' 1 Q 59 ,924 , ' Q11 111-1 1, , T -11 ,,.-f.,.1 1 , Ib , I 15 :rj A r 11 111.9 I9 'I L ,.
