FAREWELL TO OUR ALMA MATER With tear-filled eyes we leave thee, Though the whole world lies before, And live again our mem'ries Ere we open wide Life's door. Thy portals long have held us, Many friends we've gathered there, Years can not dim completely All the joys we used to share. . Along our chosen pathways We will journey ever higher With ideals you have taught us Near to comfort and inspire. And now farewell we bid thee, For the time to part is here, We face the future gladly, Armed with knowledge, without fear. -IEAN CIBNEY Q3 SENIOR HISTORY Although there are only a few of those shinIng faces left that started to- gether twelve long years ago, we have gradually added new ones until, as you see by the preceding pictures, our tribe is the largest in the history of our Alma Mater. Our fame has been growing gradually from a meager start to a successful climax. Our Class has not only been the backbone of the football team, and the mainstay of the track team, but it also has produced the finest Senior Play, an excellent Canaras under difficult circumstances, and the best Red and White in its history. Our Class is an exception, everyone pictures a big machine as awkward, and slow, but our class, big as it is, has maintained an excellent scholastic standing, enviable social standing, and a very strong financial standing. As you look at our pictures, you see many fine characteristics: intelligence, strength, friendliness, ambition, integrity, and perseverance portrayed to a high degree. We have discarded many degrading characteristics on the route, and on leaving school, we will aspire to even greater heights. If we conquer all future obstacles, as we have those of our school days, we shall hold noth- ing of worldly power in fear. Our Class is a true representation of the surrounding country, our stature pictures the mountains, our perseverance and ambition, the everlasting strug- gles of the brooks and rivers wearing their way down through the foothills, our friendliness pictures the animal life, our integrity and strength, the deep- ness of virgin forests, and our intelligence combines all these powers. Our remaining obstacle is to hold what we have, as our mountains have struggled to hold themselves forever a wild playground, and not a domes- ticated, man-made country. As we now depart from our dear Alma Mater, we leave our deeds of brav- ery, valor and fairness on the field, of good executive and financial ability in organizations, and of excellent scholastic standards, but far more do we carry away than we leave behind. We depart with a fine education in both school work and extra-curricular activities, which will help to equip us for facing the facts of the world. -IAMES isEi.l.ows Q4 . Class Manager . . Our activities on the football field are recounted in another part of this book, but we claim for our very own the intrepid little cheer-leader whose enthusiasm has swept so many Saranac Lake teams to victory. On March 23, twelve members of our class set out to out-Dracula Dracula. ln a darkened auditorium, accompanied by a mournful wind and the blood- curdling howls of wolves, our frightened amateur detectives unravelled the Mystery of the Tower Room before an audience of more than five hundred. john Duquette's artistry in designing posters secured a large audience, the skill of the actors, the executive staff, and the director Miss Forth, pleased it. The junior Proml After days of fluttery preparations, the social event of the year at last arrived. lt is always a beautiful sight but seemed to outdo itself this year. Frivolous organdies, sophisticated satins, serene crepes-all combined to make the ballroom as colorful as a Mardi Gras parade. A fitting climax, indeed, to such a colorful yearl Today we look forward to the glory of being Seniors. We have cast off the frivolity of Freshman days, for we realize that life is, indeed, a serious matter. We have given up the pseudo-sophistication of the high school Sophomore. We know now that the really wise man is the one who sees how much he has yet to learn. We come to the end of our junior year and look forward eagerly' to next September, when we shall be sedate Seniors, in name if not in deed. Truly, our junior year has been so joyous that we may carry some of its radiance even tothe other side. -BARBARA CONKLlN E27 SOPHOMORE CLASS On September l7, about one hundred members of the Sophomore class held their first meeting for the purpose of electing officrs. Now that we stop for a minute to look back over our first year upstairs we see a rather successful one. Our class picnic at Fish Creek early in May furnished a grand time for all of us. We enjoyed a regular old-fashioned weenie roast and several excit- ing baseball games. Several of our class members have distinguished themselves, not only in class activities, but also in other school affairs. There were four Sophomores in the Varsity Club, five on the Red and White staff, nine in the band, and five were participants in the Commercial contest at Chateaugay, Especially outstanding in athletics lfootballl were our president, john Munn, Orville lvlarello, and Andy Fortune. Art Charland, the famous miler, is also a mem- ber of our class. We are looking forward with even more eagerness to next year's prom and play. We hope to make a success of both of them, but l hardly think we'll ever forget our Sophomore year. -ELLEN DEAN Q8 SNAPS Right On The Campus, Too No Draft Ventilation Same-Q-U Editor Ed Here's the Answer The Old Smoking Ground How Are Ya?-Fine, Fine Roughies Why That Alluring Sr'nil:? Perhaps we should name some of those students who have given of their talent in days gone by to make the newspaper a success but to name a few would do injustice to others who have worked without glory. However, be- cause there has always been the best kind of team work, the paper has won several third place awards in the annual contests of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and this year was awarded second place. The publication has also been affiliated with the Cornell lnterscholastic Press Association. Though we work to win high ratings in these yearly contests, the real achievements of our newspaper cannot be measured in typographical excel- lence. The real yardstick is this: What sort of influence has the Red and White had upon its readers? Has it always instructed and inspired? Has it been the voice of its readers, and most important has it been the means of bringing into closer relationship the teacher and student? If it has, then the editor and staff feel amply rewarded for their effort. Next year a new staff will guide the paper through ten issues of print, We have selected these people with care and we hand over the Red and White to them, with the hope that it will be the finest paper ever seen in the school. Although the Canton and Malone games were the hardest to lose, these being the first and last, the intervening league games more than made up for their loss. Backed by an enthusiastic student body, the team got under way after mak- ing a poor start by losing to Canton i6-Ol. Loss of that game gave Coach Wilson a more pliable squad than he had hitherto assembled, and as subse- quent victories showed, he made the most of it. An early start in training and intensive preliminary exercises were respon- sible for the good physical condition of the team. lt was this condition which enabled them to withstand the pounding of more rugged teams and, even if beaten, to put up a great battle. Any team winning over Saranac was well aware of the fact that they had earned it. It was characteristic of the squad that they offered no excuses for defeat but worked the harder to iron out mistakes. There will be few veterans back next year, as nearly all, including Captain Carl Ryan, Lehaland Cillmett, Harvey Swinyer, Gus Stunzi, Lawrence Boyer, William Duquette, and Walter C-aughan will be lost to the team, leaving the newly elected captain of next year's team, Eugene Hickey, Orville lvlorello, Andrew Fortune, john Munn, Charles Keough and other recruits to carry on and keep the Interscholastic Football Championship won by Saranac seven times out of nine. - -WALTER CAUCHAN 39 BASKETBALL Although technically failing to better its league standing, this year's bas- ketball team showed a great improvement over last's. The cause of Saranac's fourth place was the ignorance of a rule which stated that no player may participate in any games other than those sched- uled by his schoolf' Leonard Ryan, unaware of the rule, played with another team during the season. Tupper Lake, which Saranac had defeated twice, protested these games. Saranac Lake showed its usual good sportsmanship by forfeiting them without a controversy. The Red showed its courage and spirit by playing the league champion, Plattsburg, in a double overtime period only to lose by one point. Lake Placid, snowed under twice by Plattsburgh, again proved itself our nemesis, by defeating us twice. Malone and Lyon Mountain were played in an lntraleague match, but proved themselves too strong for Saranac. This year C-us Gardner, Alvin Brown, Sehon Dyer, and Iggy Sprague were lost to the team. Next year Gus Stunzi and the Ryans, Len and Carl, will be missed. However, players of no mean calibre have been de- veloped in the inter-mural league and will be on hand with the rest of this year's team to start a hard campaign for league honors, led by Bob Ryan, who was elected captain. -HUBERT MILLER 40 Wilcox Cummer Kelley Duquefle Andrews Vanlxlorfwick Andrews Wamsganz Worden Hallock Dora Saumier Caughan Stone Spencer Bousquef Thompson H.
