December 11, 12, 13: Three one-act plays presented by the Theater Workshop: Saroyan's Hello Out There took place in jail with Don Pratt behind the bars. Highlight: Brad Fuller shot Don with a derringer and the sound effect was 22 calibre . . . Queens of France . . . Art Edelman played the part of a New Orleans swindler a la Charles Adams ... became the year's number one funny man by virtue of those lace cuffs and draped hands . . . Kathie Shaughnessy, as the little girl in This Property Is Condemned walked the rail superbly. No one has been able to sing You're the Only Star in My Blue Heaven since without a tear. December 14: The Prom: It wasn't formal ... a bar in Bates . . . the DQ and Twila sang . . . December 18: Christmas dinner: sitdown supper . . . candlelight and carols . . . must we really leave? January 6: Trunks stacked outside MacCracken ... some came back with rings . . . Mass council meetings for those who over- slept a week or two . . . here we go again . . . January 17: Return basketball game with Hunter College. They had cheerleaders . . . need we repeat? January 21: Living Endowment Fund dinner: We sit down again. You have to pay for tablecloths now. DAYS OF OUR YEAR September 24, 1946: In Andrews yard, flowers still ... on the loveseats out- side Dudley and MacCracken, a covey of surveyors . . . 36 veterans at college now . . . I'm going to begin my contract early this year . . . are the freshmen ALL Holly- wood starlets, or have I a bad case of Sophomore Slump? . . . Lights among the new faculty, the younger poets and Sir Bernard Pares. October 17: Item from the Campus calendar: ”3:00 Bates Lounge . . . Two films for Mr. Arnheim's students (anyone interested is invited too) 'Problem solving in Monkeys'.” (Several interested monkeys came). October 31: The Freshman party: The new SL talent . . . Nancy Ham- burger, or was it Miss Stone . . . Schenck's songs sophis- ticate . . . Mira's croons en fran ais . . . and the dancing . . . afterwards the beers and informal jive with June. November 5: For the Scholarship Benefit, Noel Coward's Present Laughter” at the Plymouth Theater. Clifton Webb, the star; $3,624, the profit. And Webb didn't even type in the bathtub. November 24: Trustees' week-end. They were pleased with us. November 26: Myra Cohn wrote a letter to the Campus. November 27: So did Don Fortini. December 7: Bronxville High School: The Yale Glee Club and Sarah Lawrence Chorus in a joint concert. Dance at the col- lege featured beer and pretzels; new acquaintances. The vets were there too. January 28: The Scholarship Fair: Biggest success of all . . . Brothers Solomon and Hart saved us. February 1,2: Allcollege ski week-end. You don't have to go to Florida February 3: to get a tan. Fortini and crew stepped on the Tiger's tail. We beat the Princeton Elm Club at basketball. At last! February 4: Chest X-Rays inside a caravan. The mayor was supposed to give a speech, but it rained. Miss Trumbull substituted. 7:15 Lead Belly packed Bates with a ten string guitar. We were stunned into silence. February 5: Second meeting of the Marriage Course. Some of us tittered and learned of the birds and bees. February 20: Maya Deren's avant guarde films... watching them, something like swimming under water. Miss Deren didn't like to explain her method . . . she has her own. March 1: The Midwinter dance in Westlands White Room: Bal- loons in the goldfish bowl and vice versa . . . hair atop heads . . . orchestra so good it afforded real conversa- tion . . . snow for extra festivity. THIS IS A YEAR OF INCREASED ACTIVITY And wasn't there some fracas about a beauty contest? Someone didn't approve of movie contracts. March 7: The chorus sang at Williams.
