The Sapulpan 1980 Sapulpa High School Sapulpa, Oklahoma Volume 58 Our Special Thanks to a Special This year we would like to dedicate the 1980 Sapulpan to one of the most loved educators in Sapulpa, W. H. (Bill) Shaw. ‘‘Shaw’’ as he is known, is the head of the Industrial Arts Dept, and teaches drafting, general auto mechanics and stage craft. He was born on June 7, 1915 in Vanoss, Okla. and attended East Central State College where he received a B.A. and a Master's degree. Shaw started his teaching career in Tishomingo after he returned from the Army. He moved from there to Healdton in 1953 where he stayed until 1958. His next move was to Sapulpa where he has been ever since. Shaw has taught many different classes in his 32 years of teaching, these were: general auto, auto shop, stagecraft, drafting, audiovisual, woodworking, leathercraft, history, math, science, and even one year of girls basketball. He is an avid supporter of all school activities, especially wrestling. He has made it possible for our plays and many programs to have that professional look of good backgrounds and props. Shaw can be found at everything from dances to meetings but especially the steps during graduation. We would like to thank you for playing such an important role in developing OUR SAPULPA HIGH. 3 It Happens Every .Fall... ... School Life Is it possible to press an entire year into a single book? Can the memories gained by each of us be put into photos and words and kept for eternity? How can our sorrows, our joys, our triumphs, our defeats, our dreams, our whole lives . . . how can we preserve these? We certainly can't in one book But we can present the highlights of the year and let you draw your own memories. After all, who knows better how you felt about the year than you? 12 Art The Art Department is a well rounded program involving many facets of art. It offers such classes as Jewelry, Pottery, Fibers, Drawing, Painting, Basic Art, and Design. The department works to develop the creativity of the students with their artwork and to instill an understanding of most other art forms. They attend many shows around the state and always rate well. The instructors are Sam Houghton and Randy Taylor. 18 Upper left: Kelly Phillips tiles his project Upper right: Mitch Gibbons and Lori Gray paint Handicapped school wall Lower left: Chris Ethridge at the butter Above: Dawn Long and David Whipple tie the Knot ' Business The Business Department teaches students the skills and abilities needed by our students to be successful economic citizens and business employees. History is the yesterday ot mankind; it is the memory ot men. Without a knowledge ot yesterday, without any memory, there is no guide to tomorrow. A society without history lacks direction. 22 Industrial Arts Upper left: Carl Watson and Gary Pendergrass put finishing touches on their bars Upper right Mike Peters works on project in Wood Shop Middle left: Brett Hathcock is back to the drawing board Lower right: Jeff Roe is grinding a weld Lower left Howell Coplan is squaring off an angle iron. 24 Math Sapulpa High School offers a variety of math courses including Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Plane Geometry, High School Arithmetic, and Advanced Math IV. Even though a math credit is not required in High School, we have over one-third of the student body enrolled in some type of math course. That surely says something for our fine math department. Our teachers are very interested in the students and are always willing to give extra time if needed Upper left: Dan Schmidt tries to explain to Mr Madding that Algebra II is a serious subject Center left: Eric Moore pays close attention Lower left: John Hendrix discovers something interesting in his book Right: Cindy Kalb and Eran Splam. with the guidance of Mrs Bailey, may become successful mathematicians 25 Top: The Blue Blazed Marvels Above: Accompanists; T. The department is well equipped in most areas, but they do have enough equipment for the basic requirements in all areas. With his help, along with many dedicated members, the club sponsored many activities: Burning of George, the Homecoming Dance, Breakfasts and Dinners, the Kickoff for Mid-Winter Sports and made lots of tags and signs; all in a combined effort to help boost the spirit of the athletes as well as the student body. We have many memories of the past year at SHS — most of which we hope are recorded in this book. In the past years, we have made many friends, have gained new knowledge, and share invaluable experiences that will remain embedded in our thoughts for the rest of our life. At times, we dreaded coming to school; Band practice, again'? , doing our homework; today'? Our papers are due today? , having tornado drills; if it goes off today, it's for real folks, but wa lasted through it all and honestly deep down, wouldn't have traded it M m all for anything. Thanks, Mr. Taylor, for having patience with us, and standing by us when we were behind A special thanks to the staff ancf photographers who worked hard to make the 1980 annual one of the best ever May God bless each and everyone and keep you in his will. hen's PIZZd Congratulations Seniors!
