We captured first place for our skit and next year we. the Seniors of 79. would not return to the halls our float during Homecoming, but the Juniors sometimes of Sapulpa High School proved our stiffest competition at the pep rallies. Mgf R EpsheeL ,- : • f- v .. -__________•• ■ - :• In a season when they were dubbed as losers, the 1978 Chieftains rallied despite their inexperience to heights never before known to a Sapulpa football team. Picked to finish last in District 4A-7, the Chiefs showed heart throughout the year by never giving up despite the heavy odds that were always against them. For their late game heroics in which they repeatedly pulled the game out in the waning moments, these gridiron gladiators were known as the Cardiac Kids.” SHS, in its inaugeral season in the state’s highest class, rebounded against the odds to advance to the quarter finals, the farthest ever of any Sapulpa squad. Coach Art Davis’s crew reflected the spirit that dwelt in the heart of all Sapulpans and produced a desire to win that will hard press any future team to match. 69 Top Lett Beatty and Dillard swarm Tiger ball carrier Top Center Fleaflicker pass is unloaded against the Wildcats Lower Lett Hood is congratulated atter a key sack Lower Center Grant plows through tor more yardage Top Right Coach Davis looks over practice Lett Center Brown throws tor a tirst down Right Center Henderson kicks a tield goal. After dropping the season opener to Tulsa Central, they stunned Edison and Broken Arrow. In the Edison Tournament they lost to 1 ranked Mason by 1 pt. but came back to beat Central and rout Tulsa Rogers. At the semester, transfer student Yvester Johnson gave the Chiefs a big lift and they defeated Okmulgee, Broken Arrow and 7th ranked Claremore before losing in overtime to Owasso in the finals of the Webster Tournament. Sapulpa also attended the Oklahoma City festival winning both games. During the season ending homestead, the Chiefs upset 5 ranked Cleveland and lost a one point overtime game to 7 ranked McAlester. In the regional Tournament at Broken Arrow, they beat Tulsa Hale and then pulled off the upset of the season by tripping a 1 ranked Muskogee With the Regional trophy tucked away, the Chiefs advanced to the Area Tournament and were edged by Enid. They beat Memorial the next night and headed for the State Tournament. From the south comes the rain that nourishes the land. Arriving over the eastern horizon appears the light that guides our lives. And in the west it departs, tar beyond our grasp and imaginations. There I shall go, searching, for an endless sunrise. Yet too few were my days in breathless breezes, blowing over the shadows of yesteryear. And here I stand on the brink of time and space. Give my bones back to Mother Earth, but set my soul free and I will fly, through endless eternity. Congratulations Class of '79 LON T. JACKSON AGENCY, INC. We were there from curtain rise to the grand finale. We ail evolved in the same sand castle and its memories will slowly crumble, but for the time we were invincible. In the past years we have found our security-blanket relationships; when someone needed to share a branch of our giving tree — we were there. We couldn’t sit like mismatched bookends, even a bookend needs companionship to serve its purpose. We learned to wait, to take our time, because change takes time and change isn’t always right. And if you were very smart or exceptionally lucky, you learned that regardless of how massive and jumbled the world gets, what is invaluable and permanent will always remain. This strange collage presented a lot to believe in, but much more to hope for. Thank you Mr. Taylor; your presence will be noticed throughout our book. Your new ideas were hard to accept, at first, but in the end they contributed to the 1979 annual. Thank you Mr. James and faculty. Let the many times we were out in the hall making noise or breaking up your class, be forgotten. We were only trying to do a job. My own special thanks goes to the staff for their hard work in preparing memories of the past year. I can’t forget the photographers for their many extra hours spent taking and printing necessary pictures. To those of you returning to the staff next year, I wish you good luck. Sincerely, . . .
