There the Chiefs were pushed out of the first place position when Jenks scored a lucky two points in the final second of the game. The Webster Warriors were the Chief’s next victim, (72-53), followed by Broken Arrow (87-59). Sapulpa was down ten points against Okmulgee at the half, but made a great comeback to defeat the Bulldogs (56-51) for their 6th straight winning season. Joe Thompson and Buster Smith were selected for All-Conference, Joe led the team in scoring with a 15.2 average and Buster Smith led the team in rebounding with a 12.2 average. Thompson also set a school record for free throw percentage with 77.9% for the season. Leading rebounder. Buster Smith, comes down with one of his 280 season rebounds against Sand Springs. Longfellow Jerry Bailey was loved and respected by those who knew him. A humanitarian: his boys always came first. In his five years at Sapulpa High School, Coach Bailey accomplished innumerable things. He was responsible for the acquisition of the new Outdoors Sports Facility and due to his tireless efforts, work has also begun on a much-needed football stadium. With his easy-going nature and wry sense of humor, Coach Bailey developed a rapport between himself and his players. Under his guiding hand, a togetherness' grew among the members of the football team. Coach Bailey will always have a special place in the hearts of the students at Sapulpa High School. His influence on those whose lives he touched will remain forever. His mark on the community is one that will not be soon forgotten. As a Scottish poet once wrote: To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. It matters not how strait the gate. How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
