1975 SAPULPAN Sapulpa High School Sapulpa, Oklahoma Volume 53 A proud symbol of the heritage of our past, the fierce determination of the present, and hope for the future. A Chieftain is teamwork, togetherness, ability, but more important the desire to improve upon that ability. A Chieftain is all of this and more. Table Of Conienis Activities Organizations Sports Royalty Administration Classes 2 A Chieftain is a person who survives the world's largest speed-bumps and then can’t find a parking space. He's friendship and goodtimes and someone who’ll help you through the not-so-good times. A Chieftain is someone in faded-out blue jeans and a work shirt standing by the Snack Bar watching the football jocks play jacks. A teacher who not only teaches you about his chosen subject, but also teaches you about life. Someone who’ll play spades with you or just buy you at the slave sale so you won’t be embarrassed. A Chieftain is strength, determination, hope, and friendship. A Chieftain is . . . A Chieftain’s world is Blue. Surrounded by blue skies, faded and new Levis, baby-blue Mustangs, occasional blackish bruises and finally a blue mood accompanied a sea of blue graduation gowns. Our year passed. But through all our high school years our jeans, Levis, Lees, Stuffed, A-Smile, Wranglers, and Gotcha Cov-ereds, stayed close by. Jeans to play football in, jeans to ride around in, jeans to go out to eat in, jeans to take your best girlfriend out to a fancy restaurant and a show . . . The only distinction between ’’grubby” jeans and ’’good” jeans were that the ’’good” jeans had three holes or less. Then a new addition was added to the jean fad - works-hirts! Unadorned, adorned with sparkles, glitter or just plain old embroidery. And the fad stayed. And we finally sat smug in our blue graduation gowns, facing a blue podium, under blue skies, in a slightly blue mood, with our ever faithful blue jeans and cut-offs, sang our school hymn for the last time as students. Yes, A Chieftain’s World is Blue . . . 4 Studeni Performances Were Very Popular The most popular of all assemblies are those put on by the students themselves, from the versatile Letter-men’s Assembly, the school plays, and, of course, the Senior Assembly. But our student performances were not limited only to the stage. There were daily comedies, as well as soap operas presented in front of the Snack Bar and in Shadowy Corners of the hall. The Christmas Assembly brought us closer to the Yuletide customs in other lands. But as always St. Nick comes through in the end. The ever popular cowboys, the Skoal Brothers, entertained us during the FFA Assembly. Stacy West, Bill Allen, Kristen Zumwalt and Betsy Dunklee in the Jr. Play ’’Cheaper By the Dozen.” 6 Chieffains Boogie Foosball! The cry was heard far and wide. A game that could become a test between the quickest wrist in the west and the fastest spin to win. Chieftains of every sex and age became possessed with the burning desire to play this game of skill. They deserted their favorite hang-outs, Ken’s Pizza and Tastee Freeze, to experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. They stampeded the Youth Center after football games to try their wrists at one of the two foosball tables. Foosball tournaments began popping up everywhere, putting spades at a close second. Football games, basketball games and wrestling matches provided us with activities at which we enjoyed the performance of our classmates, the companionship of our friends, and the general atmosphere of the yelling, laughing, boogying crowd. Dances, plays, concerts, and Ken’s Pizza Parlor helped us pass those ’’idle hours” with alot more fun. Each of us boogied to the sound of a different drummer, but we all had a good time in ’75. Chieftains Were Involved The Chieftains of '75 were never at a loss for something to do. We were involved in everything from athletics and rooters club to making Indian jewelry and Student Council. We sold fruit cakes, saved newspapers, organized tournaments, and made plans for the prom. Clubs and honor groups attended contests and decorated for dances and football games. We were involved in our studies, our best friends romances, and the trials and tribulations of high school life. 10 Students at SHS raised money for those less fortunate than themselves and even challenged the Jr. High to a can drive. We won - didn’t we? We washed car windows and ate quarter pounders at McDonalds, and brought a foreign exchange student to Sapulpa High. Involvement was a key word in 1975. n Grubbies Popular With Chieftains Our grubbies have carried us through many nights at the foosball table and long hard days at school. Looks aren't everything (just look around) - Comfort is. Our grubbies. worn out to perfection, met our every need in our busy schedule. Concentration was easier with our softened denims and cottony t-shirts. 12 14 Spirit We've got spirit, yes we do. We’ve got spirit - how ’bout you? This year spirit was something we couldn’t contain. In the roaring of the crowd, the beat of the drums, and the rustle of the cheerleader's pom-pons was heard the spirit of SHS. We thought we were unbeatable and although our team didn’t always finish with the most number of points on the scoreboard, we proved that our spirit was unbeatable. On every facet of high school activities students of SHS demonstrated a pride in the Sapulpa Chieftains that just wouldn't be held down. The enthusiasm of the athletes, as well as the students, and the faculty built a vivacious, strong, proud spirit that well befitted the Chieftains of '75. inh 15 Graduation Day Nears All the things must pass. And our Senior year did, much too quickly. Measuring for caps and gowns, cramming for final exams practicing for the Senior Assembly, filled our last days at SHS. We counted off the days on the calendar gleefully but also with an apprehension many of us could not define. Our childhood days were numbered and were lost, and our search began for our Somewhere, our own special place in the world. But a pan of us will always remain haunting the halls of SHS. 16 61 S3I1IAI10 V 20 A year of firsts. That’s what the 1974-1975 school year proved to be for the Sapulpa High School Band. Not only did we receive superior ratings at marching contest and district contest but we also did things we’ve never done before. During football season the marching band built spirit with its musical cheers, signs, and on-the-field performances. Our pepped-up stage band performed at every pep rally and boogied with the crowd at basketball games to everyones favorite ”Mr. Anthony’s Boogie. And the biggest first of all was the FIRST ANNUAL BAND ASSEMBLY which was made up of programs by both the concert band and stage band and was honored with the crowning of our 1975 Band Queen and her court. Seven-thirty in the morning is awfully early but we proved that those early rehearsals were worth it by exhibiting one of the proudest bands at SHS. 21 All State Band Members Nelson: Liz Agee: Judith Tilbury: Valerie McDonald: Julie Neal; Patty Chambers. 22 TWIRLERS: Brenda Lister and Becky Dodson Drum Major Davis Ward Mr. Brite and Mr. Thompson nard at work? Work, work, work, win, win, win, that's exactly what they did. The Advanced Mixed Chorus had a great year. At District they received all Superiors. Then on to State Contest where they won Sweepstakes. The choir received a Superior-plus and a standing ovation. Their next goal was to walk away with the Buccaneei Music Festival in Corpus Christi which they did. They received all Superiors once again. The Boys Glee and Girls Glee both won the Outstanding Trophy and the Choir won the Runner-Up. They were the school that received the most trophies, literally walking away with the contest. Besides contests, the Choir performed for the State FT A and the State PEO conventions and also did their annual Spring Concert. This year they also did an operetta, The Singing Freshman. Many extra hours outside of class were put in by Mr. Law, their Fearless Leader, and the members of the Choir. With work and willpower they did win! 27 Presenting The 1975 Qapulpan Siaff The Yearbook Staff Lana hard at work. I’ll read ’em, you write ’em. A typical day in yearbook. This club is responsible for many services such as their annual walkathon in which they raised $600. This year they were also busy helping in a paper drive for the School for the Handicapped, a campout, weiner roasts, kite flies and art days for the kids. Not to mention all the hours spent to train the aspiring young athletes for the Special Olympics. TARS have fun while helping some very special people. Bigger due to the fact that nearly fifty new members were initiated this year, the biggest initiation ever at SHS. Better because it did a lot more this year than ever before. At Christmas they challenged the Student Council at ringing the bells for the Salvation Army and won. They also provided refreshments for the teachers at Christmas. The Activity Calendar was provided by the NSH and they also sponsor the Scholars of the Nine Weeks. Another first this year was the nomination of two NHS members for the National Scholarship and we had one winner. The NHS has been very busy this year. In the Area Tournament they lost two close games to 1 ranked Muskogee and Tulsa Central. The Chiefs earned the nickname ’’GIANT KILLERS” by upsetting five highly ranked teams in one stretch at mid-season: Kelley 49-40, Okmulgee 60-55, Sand Springs 74-62, Webster 64-56, Kelley 68-58. Three players, Larry Brown, Reggie Grant, and Joe Thompson, were selected to the All-Conference Team.
