1973 SAPULPAN Sapulpa High School Sapulpa, Oklahoma Volume 51 Organizations 62 Activities 30 Sports 84 Administration 16 Royalty 46 Classes 100 2 3 In a disarray of jeans, smocks, clogs and rib-ticklers ... the year nineteen seventy-three set its pace . . . different perhaps . . . but very unique. For some it was a patch or embroidery on faded out jeans, while others preferred high rise baggies with wide cuffs . . . But for all . . . funky fads frollicked fine, fulfilling a fabulous fable. 5 What was the big blue machine? It was the 1972 Homecoming theme, but its real meaning was the spirit of the Chieftains . . . watching, inspiring wherever we were. During the week . . . classes built floats for the parade . . . student body elected queen and attendants . . . alumni attended Homecoming assembly, football game and Homecoming dance. 7 8 SIGNS OF ABILITY There was a thrill of excitement as the actors, audiences, and applause brought about the feeling of accomplishment. This reflection of nature which was educational and amusing took a great deal of determination and hard work. Students at Sapulpa High School demonstrated their interest and ability through the hours of practicing for success and fulfillment in fine plays. 9 High school is an age of maturing, of new experiences and encounters . . . now is the time to explore . . . SHS students find fun and relaxation at our youth center . . . Ping Pings and other clubs are involved in community projects, such as fighting litter. to r w i We strive to please . . . but now, we go even beyond . . . doing our best to offer you a unique opportunity to please yourself . . . step right up, and exhibit your creativity . . . select your own pictures and say whatever you’d like to hear. Insure another photo of yourself in this year’s yearbook. Just one string attached ... if you don’t like the book now, who’s to blame? n The pride of 1973 seemed limitless . . . peppy people participated patiently through perspiration and powerful persistence . . . Sapulpa fans, huddled between blankets and sheltered by umbrellas, cheered the Chieftains to victory . . . the phenomenal lungs of the pep club and the bleacher bums were heard over the persistent roar of the crowd . . . both sweet victory and bitter defeat were experienced . . . but everyone knew you couldn’t keep a good chieftain down . . . Sapulpa was number 1. 13 OF SPIRIT Sapulpa spirit soared . . . spreading success . . . supporting students, setting startling scores . . . Pep rallies challenged classes to win the spirit stick . . . spirit busses overflowed with enthusiastic students, traveling to out-of-town games . . . following our annual burning of George students dragged town in a Victory Parade . . . classes received spirit points from a can drive for needy families. 15 17 ADMINISTRATION School Board An efficient administration serves as a backbone for our school system. They make decisions which lead the way for the students at Sapulpa High. The community as a whole will benefit from projects such as a newly constructed swimming pool, the bond which will enlarge our school facilities and the betterment of our human relations. Derv Folger. President Sam Allen Attorney Marie Garrison Clerk H.Q. Gilliam Treasurer 18 The Elected School Board Members are Tim Hershberger. Derv Folger. Max Callaham, John Carletti, and Mike Borden. 19 As time progressed there was a need for a change to bigger and better things. Mr. Cockrum felt the need this year as he accepted a new position. Through the nine years of loyalty and devotion, Mr. Cockrum showed us that he really cared for the students and staff. Mr. Charles Dodson took on the task of managing both, the junior and senior high schools. Many things have happened that will have made Mr. Cockrum's last year a memorable one for all. And with great pride we will remember It is a privilege to be a Chieftain. SHS invites students to explore in language arts. French classes prepared and ate their own French meal. They studied cultures and holidays of France . . . Spanish students took a trip to Mexico and experienced first hand the cultures of the Spanish . . . English classes covered a variety of material from Macbeth to the Red Badge of Courage . . . Students amazed one another by their speeches and stage performances in Speech classes. Things that require the knowledge of what our ancestors have discovered, scientific machines, and mathematical equations that must all be used to solve the problems of today. We are learning in our classes so we might someday contribute something useful to our world. Social studies gives us the knowledge of the past and present. Math and Science expands our minds to form knowledge for the future. 25 MUSIC George Brite Geraldine DuBois Jack Fox LIBRARY VeDon Law Merle Mullen 26 Fine Arts And Business Anyone who loves music, who can lose himself in a book, or can spend hours painting a picture of a barn, knows the deep satisfaction that can be found in fine arts. Students make their own creations in the art department. Students also develop abilities in business courses. These courses give background knowledge to students who wish to become secretaries, stenographers, or any of the many other business occupations. ■ I ) Ivt Min ? r raaat (lu Mu aai kruiHi wfc. How does one capture the memories, record them in photos and bind them between two vinyl covers?
