Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1966 volume:

Accent on Action ACTION is the only way to describe the exciting things that have been happening at Sapulpa High School this year. With the ACCENT ON ACTION our staff has atempt-ed to pin down the mood of a single moment and convey the excitement and emotion of the whole event. Remember, tension building before an important game, campaigning before election time, last-minute cramming for that crucial test, crowning of our queens, and the band playing On Sapulpa . . . This is the ACTION; this is the spirit that makes ours the Chieftain way. This is Sapulpa High in full ACTION. Here is our moment of truth . . . 2 We, the Annual Staff proudly dedicate the 1966 Sapulpan to Mrs. Betty Mitchell, who has served Sa-pulpa students as registrar for thirteen years. Although her warm personality and understanding patience are known to almost everyone, few realize the major part her job plays in maintaining the tranquility of school life. is she who keeps people on theif toes and tolerates the many excuses a student can devise, while never complaining and working much over time. With gratitude and deep appreciation, Mrs. Mitchell we compile this yearbook in your honor. Table Administration Page 10 Organizations Page 26 Lou Stuart and Keith Hogan cram before exam time. Miss Merry Christmas Candidates Activities Choir Performs at Oklahoma City 1965-1966 was a hectic, successful sea-for for the Sapulpa High School Chorus. Because of previous outstanding performances, the chorus was invited to sing for the O.E.A. State Teacher's meeting in October. Members showed enthusiasm for this performance by practicing faithfully at night rehearsals. During December they participated in the O.S.U. Music Festival and later in the month performed the Messiah. This spring the chorus presented A Musical Night To Remember with the aid of American Youth Performs. Also the chorus competed in the Tri-State Music Festival at Enid. For the last performance this year, the choir sang for Baccalaureate and Commencement. Looking over this year's accomplishments are officers Logan Gantz, President, Carolyn Smithee, Beverly Blake, Treasurer, Nancy Connor Historian, Linda Lee Reporter. Because of an outstanding performance in Oklahoma City last December before the American School Band Directors Association, the Sapulpa High School Band was asked to perform at the Music Educators National Conference this year in Kansas City, Missouri. The band left March 20 in chartered buses on the two-day trip. Members of the M.E.N.C. gave the band a standing ovation at the end of its performance, which was the climax of many years of hard work by both Mr. Brite and past high school bands. Previous to the Kansas City trip, the band presented its Annual Mid-Winter Concert. After taking part in the Annual All-City Spring Festival of Bands, the high school band attended the Tri-State Music Festival at Enid and received a superior rating in both concert and sight reading. To honor the recognition that the band had received, the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce declared Tuesday, April 26, as Official Band Appreciation Day and, also, sponsored a Junior and Senior High Band Banquet that night at the Oaks Country Club. 130 ROW 1 Julia Rbbinson, Carmen Crosslin, Linda McMunn, Carolyn White, Martha Snider. Marching Season is Highlighted by Performance at Skelly Stadium Several band members relax on the bus before leaving for Kansas City. Tuba soloists Kit Harlow, Larry Hinderer, and Jack Tilbury are featured in the Mid-Winter Concert. Band Managers help load the bus for trip to Kansas City. 132 Drummers Kim Whittenton and Janie Shipman are featured in Skelly Stadium performance. Drum Major Logan Gantz gives the band a forward march during marching practice. Band members rehearse every morning at 8:00 in the band room. Performing at the dedication of the new Skelly Stadium in Tulsa this year was the highest distinction the Sapulpa High School Marching Band has ever attained. The band was asked to do both a pre-game and half time show at an exhibition game between the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys, during which the new stadium was dedicated. In addition to marching in most of the football games and parades, the band entered the marching contest at Pryor and received a superior rating. 133 Plays and Programs Entertain Hours of hard work go into the planning of assemblies and plays. The assemblies represent most of the school's clubs and a variety of important events of the year. While the plays, which include the senior play and the junior play, reveal the talents of S.H.S. students. All in all leadership and talent equal the success of this year's plays and programs. Talented Terry Tucker and Regina Roe sing a medley of songs at the homecoming assembly. Janis Winterbower, Dennis Shelton, Gary Mullins, and Sylvia Myles, all members of the senior play, 'Take Me To Your President, go over the pub scene. Drifters' Mike Owen, Logan Gantz, David Riley, and Gary Smith entertain students at the Blazer Revue. A wedding scene from the junior play, Our Town , features Mary Hunter, Tommy Causey, Janie Davis, Brooks Bingman, and Steve Crum. 134 An outstanding performance was given by Sam Echols and Waldon Wells in the senior play Take Me To Your President. Christmas brought such memorable moments as the nativity scene with Sharon Woolery and Chris Treeman as Mary and Joseph. A highlight of the Americanism assembly was the Johnny Appleseed scene with Gary Wasson as Johnny Appleseed. 135 Linda Groover, Sandra Allred, Robert Lowe, and Cindy Baxter meet a deadline as they discuss articles with Mrs. Colburn. Journalism Encourages Development of Writing Talents Preparation of a weekly newspaper demands a certain amount of talent and a great amount of training. Under the direction of Mrs. Emily Colburn, the journalism classes publish the Pow Wow each Tuesday in connection with the Sapulpa Herald. As each week begins, reporters assemble pictures and news of recent school events and compile interesting, informative articles and amusing columns. The time and efforts of these classes are rewarded with the appreciation of every student. 136 First semester students learn the fundamentals of newspaper writing through a study of various textbooks. Staff Compiles Yearbook staff members this year have worked hard to make the 1966 Sapulpan the best ever. Early in the Fall, the staff attended an annual seminar at Central State College in Edmond to review techniques of publication. Brenda Vaughn, co-editor, received instructions in new methods of assembling a yearbook while attending a Yearbook Publication Workshop on the campus of Oklahoma University during the summer. 138 Johnette Guilfoyle and Rita Vanatta complete their drafts. Janet Bynum and Sharon Warren check off pictures for the Junior class section.
