WHY PLAY FGOTBALL! There is no easy way to play football. It isn't that kind of a game. It is a hard game for hardy boys--for boys who are tough in body and in spirit. Players and teams who tried to take the easy way have come to grief down through the years. You cannot reap the benefits of football without paying the pre- miums. Premiums are paid in the form of strenuous physical ef- fort, in self-denial of luxuries and leisure time, in the subordina- tions of selfinterest for the good ofthe team. Played wholeheartedly, football is a soul-satisfying outlet for the rugged, courageous type of boy who likes physical contact. Played halfheartedly, football is a waste of time and energy. Football is no halfway game. Football is drama, music, dignity, sorrow. It is exhilaration of victory and shock and quiet in defeat. It's the quivering voice of a dying Gearge Gipp telling his Notre Dame teammates, Win one for the Gipper. Winning should be one reason for playing footballg wanting to be the best. You boys who are out for football have the opportunity to learn the intrinsic values of QD Discipline, sacrifice, work, fight and teamworkg Q25 To learn how to take your licks and yet fight backg C35 To be so tired you think you are going to die, but instead of quitting, you somehow learn to fight a little harderg Q45 When your team is behind, you learn to dig in a little harder and deeper and do whatever it takes to catch up and win the gameg and C55 you learn to believe in yourself because you know how to rise to the occasion, and you know you will do it! Football, in its rightful place, can be one of the most wholesome, exciting and valuable activities in which you can possibly partici- pate. It is the only sport I know of which teaches you to have com- plete control of yourself, learn to observe the rules of the game, regard the rights of others and stay within bounds dictated by decency and sportsmanship.
