Dear Sultans: Whenl arrived here at San Diego airport on july l9,l975, I expected to come to a country of fighting indians, brave cowboys and daring settlers, broken homes, bad generations as this is whatl saw in many movies in Indonesia fmy mom was so worried about this.l But in fact American life is different from what they showed in movies, sol started to forget everythingl heard about the USA and find out what it is like myself. I went shopping at the Safeway, went to football games, eat hot dogs and fried chicken, making friends and parties. At lastl find thatl enjoying live with all of you and I just love American food. In here I would like to write a part of my diary thatl wrote on Sep. 13, 1975 about Santana- . . . a school where the students stick to themselves.I wish I'm study in my last school in Indonesia . . . soI don't have running from one class to another and I don't have to worry about anything . . . This is part of my diary thatl wrote on Nov. 1975 . . . God, thank you for everything that you gave me, wonderful teachers thatl have, very friendly of Sultans. I enjoying being a Sultan in Santana. Everything change in my life and time goes so fast. Thank you very much to all the members of I Club for everything that you ever done for me. Also many many thanks yous for my American family. At lastl just want to say that a year as AFSer is the interest onel ever had. The happiness, the good and the bad, the triumphs and the failures, the tears and the laughs everything have a meaning for me and help me grow up and know what life is. Sultansfif you have a trip to Asia don't forget come to visit Indonesia. I would be glad to do something for you. Good luck Sultans! Good luck - Santana! Till we meet again fSampai jumpa lagil Sri Rahmi Nasution co JI Singgalang no. l l Medan, North Sumatra . Indonesia Coming from a European country which is about as industrialized and modern as the United States, I thought that it would not be too difficult to get used to another modern way of life. But already in the first week of my year, I got my first culture shock. At, believe it or not, a Jack in the box. I had never seen one before, as a drive-thru is something really new for me. On my question as to why everybody likes to stay in the car while being served, I was told that it was much more convenient. It might seem strange to you, but European life style means also, going out to dinner is to talk to people instead of going because you are hungry I finally got used to Jack-in-the- Box and I think I enjoy it now very much and it is fun to go there after a football game, like many other Sultans My first impression of Santana was that everybody had no time for other people, and that everything was so busy. I was really frustrated by all the tardies, something thatl had never heard of in my life. But finallyl accepted it and began to understand. I noticed which teachers didn't care when you are late, and fortunately there are still some, which I think is really good. I got to know many people and am proud to be able to say thatl have found some real good friends. I want to thank them especially Mrs. Rooney and thel Club. Mrs. Rooney helped me very much to get rid of frustrations and problems. There are some really l wonderful people in thel Club, andl enjoy being part of it. I am now still standing at the beginning of my year, one that will be so important for me, andI know that it will be a fantastic year. r Thank you. Very sincerely, Ulrich John Fimpel 699 Bad Mergentheim Zwischen den Bachen 39 Germany! West International Cultural Exchange IICXQ is a program in which students from foreign countries come to the United States to participate in the American way of life. Unlike AFS, they come to America at their own expense without financial aid from participating schools. This year's ICX students were Michiyo Nishii from Japan, and Lennart Waje from Sweden. ICX students are also members ofl Club, and take part in all activities during the year.
