Population Explosion Becomes Reality as Santee Santana Desert winds and green grass valleys mark our humble school... The words of the alma mater hardly seemed to fit any more as housing tracts and condominiums replaced the open spaces which surrounded the grounds when Santana first opened. Following the houses was the staggering influx of people looking for a place to call home. The result has been an overflowing bedroom community and a bulging student enrollment. The erection of four new elementary schools within three years created a strain which made necessary the continuation of the double session system begun in 1971. The graduating class of 1974 is the last who can remember when there was lunch . lt was also a people problem that brought on a revamping of the school zones, causing a loss of the Pepper Drive sect to El Cajon and the Flying Hills group to Grossmont. And the problem was scheduled to get worse. A projected enrollment of 3,500 was the estimate quoted for the school year beginning 1976, after a survey of the number of sixth graders in the Santee School District was made by the principal. Santana was built to accommodate 1500 to 2000 students and during its first year the enrollment was ideal--about 1Z00..In its ninth year of operation, this figure had ballooned to a crowded 2500. Growth of population had not been fully met by growth in classroom space. Two groups of portables and the instigation of double sessions were not enough. The halls still bulged between periods. Teachers were plagued by class counts. Classes with less than 25 pupils were dropped in some cases, to leave teachers and space available for more popular ones. Cutbacks by the district to help pay for Valhalla caused deficiencies in the budget. Field trips were halted, many requests for new books were denied, and certain cutbacks in staff were necessary. Bond issues did not pass. Residents, feeling the full burden of support due to lack of industry in this area, were tired of increasing property taxes. Ir was a no vote for the school. Yet through it all, teachers, students, and administrators survived and learning continued. Working together, they forged ahead.
