AFS is a very worthwhile organization that has brought 14 students from several different countries. The l973-74 students were lVlielco Yamasaki from Japan and Micheal Lang from Austria. All the schools in the Grossmont School District raise money by collecting from students from countries involved in the program. After the students have arrived there are dozens of other activities for fund raising and just for fun. AFS went hand and hand with a club on campus called lnternational Club orl Club. With l Club AFS had a Halloween costume party, had a booth in Parkway Plaza on AFS day, had an international exhibit in the library. Un January 11 there was the annual AFS assembly when all the AFS students from the other schools in the District came and gave two Assemblies. Lori Crull was chosen to become an AA lAmericans Abroadl student to go to Brazil. We hope she has enjoyed her stay there. The Motto for the AFS program is 'fthe world is my country and it really fits what the program is about, because it brings people from different places and ways of life together so that prejudices and gaps in understanding can be filled with knowledge and friendship.

l'd Like To Teach Th orld To Sing Howdy! 1 am Mike from Austria. No don't think immediately of Kangaroosfl live in Vienna, that's the capital of this small country in the center of Europe. Now, that l've been in the United States several monthsl can say that 1 really like California and l enjoy my staying very much. Compared to the life in Vienna, Santee-atmosphere here is pretty quiet. But the people and the life standard at all are about the same as in my country-yea, the climate is slightly different, dryer and where is the winter? QI am thinking of snow and skiingl. VVell, so the sportl am practicing here most is playing tennis. l don't know yet exactly whatl am doing after finishing school. l hopel have money for more traveling, maybe working with AFS. Butl am surel will come back to the states as early asl can and as early asl have some money. M. LANG Hi! l'm Mieko Yamasaki from japan. Japan has an area of 143,751 square miles fsmaller than Calif.l and 106,944,000 of population fahout half as big as the United Statesl. There are four main islands-Hokkaido, 1-lonshu, Shikoku, Kyushu-they stretch about 1,300 miles from northeast to southeast. lts moun- tains and big cities are located on the coastline. The highest moun- tain is Mount Fuji, 12,388 feet above sea level which is famous for its beauty. Chief products: agriculture-barley, fruits, pota- toes, rice, soybeans, tea, tobacco, wheat. Fishing industrygflou- nder, mackerel, pike, salmon, sardines, shellfish, tuna, whales, Maniifacturing and Processing-ceramics, chemicals, electric and electronic products, iron, steel, and other metals. As one of my impressions of the United States, it was surprising to see broad open fields. For me, a person from crowded place, everything looked big. Such as shoes, cars, everything. But big Americans who have big houses, big cars, higgar- dens, etc. are very wonder- ful. l had wonderful oppor- tunity to learn interesting culture differences or to get acquainted with those nice and warm people.l really appreciate AFS, my great American family the Web- ers, and wonderful Sultans of Santana that 1 could have an experience like this. I'll never forget his great year in the United States.
