JV Football The first purpose of the junior varsity football team is to develop players for the varsity. This year, the boys worked long and hard together and developed great spirit and team feeling. The season record was 5-3-1, with two defeats by only one touchdown. The outstanding player list is long but should include Don El Hajj, Marvin Brown, Rick Hainlin, Bob Hypes, Steve Core and Jim Wilde. About fifteen junior varsity players will likely move up to varsity status next season. The team probably played its outstanding game against El Cap. Down 19-0 in the fourth quarter, the Sultans rallied to tie and were inside the El Cap 10 yard lines as the game ended. It was a fine year, according to Coach Bob Guess, made so by some dedicated, tough football players. Frosh Football The 1966 Frosh Football season opened with forty-eight boys reporting for practice. While losing their first game, a hard- fought contest with the St. Augustine Saints the Sultans came back to defeat the Marion squad 14 to 7. With a 1 to 1 record Santana entered into league play confident of a successful season. After the first six losses it seemed that we might not be able to gain a league victory. But spirit remained high and the team never lost faith that it could win. Meeting Helix in the last season game would be a strong test for they had beaten four teams. Helix scored first and then Santana fought back as it had done all year. This time the Sultans were not denied; they came from behind and beat Helix 12 to 7. Football is a team sport which demands individual descipline and courage. These two attributes characterize all good athletes, not the least among them the Santana Freshman. This was the first league championship in the brief history of Santana, and it stands as an indication of things to come for the Sultans. With twenty boys competing for fifteen uniforms, the competition within the team was kept very high. Everyone knew that if he had a uniform the day of the game, he would play. Santana entered the Grossmont League Freshmen Tournament and easily advanced to the finals - there to suffer its one Ibss of the season. Monte Vista beat Santana 55-54 in an overtime which seemed to earmark the two teams as the teams to beat in league play. After four league games, Santana and Monte Vista met again. This time, Santana reversed the earlier loss by downing the Monarchs 61-43. This left the Sultans the only undefeated team in the league. The only real threat to that claim came when Santana played Granite Hills in the next to the last game of the year. It took a great effort in the last closing minutes of a second overtime period before the Sultans were able to squeek out a 56-55 decision. With this game as the only exception Santana had little trouble going undefeated in league play. With the season over, the players voted on the best defensive player award and the most valuable player award. These honors went to Terry Forster and Kyle Hypes respectively. The most improved player award went to Dale Senninger. It took total team effort to gain the success of the season. We were very fortunate to have everyone healthy, and most fortunate not to have lost anyone to J.V. and Varsity. So our congratulations to the freshmen team. 109 Douglas Lohf 98 lbs.
