The 1977-78 Pirate Revue is humpred to dedicate this yearbook to Manuel J Suiva In his 33 years of service to Santa Ynez Valley Union Hugh School he has carved a permanent place un the hearts of the communuty and un thou sands of students who will never forget hum A graduate of Gustune Union High School near Merced, Mr Silva earned his B A un Business Education at San Jose State He recieved his Masters un business educatuon and administration at USC and dud his post graduate work at Stanford and UOP After teaching busuness at Arroyo Grande Hugh for two years, lVlr Silva entered the U S Navy and he instructed method classes at the Unuversuty of Saipan un tull 1945- a bug year for S Y Hugh For the next ten years, lVlr Suiva taught business here at Santa Ynez H :gh School but he didn't consider his place here as a permanent one untill 1955, when he turned to an admunus tration career Hal Hamm, dustruct superintendent for 23 years and one of lVlr Sulva's closest friends, persuaded Nlr Silva to enter administration, he has never sought another position since that time In 1955, lVlr Sulva left full time teaching and became a teacherladmmistratuon assistant He was named vice principal in 1959 and un 1963 he became pruru cupal During the past 33 years, Mr Silva has . . Q seen a lot of changes at Santa Ynez A High The enrollmenifhasg jumped from 125 to 840 students while the teaching staff has grown from nine to 48 The campus, too has changed considerably five additional wings the library and the music room, and of course the new auto shop, ag complex gymnasium, and the Little Theater--all have been add- ed during lVlr Silva's residence here In retrospect Mr Silva names the three and four-day trips that he planned for the senior classes in the 40's and 50 s as his favorite recollec- tions He added thal: there is not one student or class that he could single for telling every class they're the best! but he said that each class and each student represented something special lVlr Silva's immediate plans call for a potential trip to Portugai, taking' classes in that laruguageiand in gourmet cooking and substitute teaching He l , is trying to find a part-time jo'b,1and 'u,i-, W he also pians to step up his already 5 f g active participation in community u services Mr Silva also wantsto write V a book about his experiences here at the high school So, although lVlr Silva is bringing an end to an era by leaving S Y. High, he will be keeping busy both inthe areas of education and community involvement The Pirate Revue staff wishes him well, as does everyone who knows him and loves him for the best of luck in the years to come I Q I I I , .
