8 Basketball Championship For SY Enjoying their finest season in a decade the Pirate Varsity basketballers compiled a 16-9 record on their way to their first LPL Championship and the quarter finals of the CIF Championship Tournament. The first round of league play was highlighted by the Pirates determined, disciplined play which found them on the top of the standings with four hard-fought, narrow victories. The team tripped twice in the second round-once to St. Joseph and onec to Atascadero-but their 6-2 record was good enough to achieve sole possession of the league crown. In the post-season tourney the Pirate ship was sailing on the crests of the waves with 75-48 thumping of Cate and a 58-52 victory over Lawndaleg however, the Bucs ran into Leon Woods and company of St. Monica and was edged 70-68 in a heartbreaker. Woods was a one-man show and scored 34 points to lead his team to victory over the Pirates who played their best game of the season.
