Senior Vickie Gardner Spotlight Vickie Gardner was an exchange student, and spent her junior year in Sweden. While submerged in the Swedish culture, she encountered a very different way of life. In contrast with our education system, the Swedish seem to have a much more difficult system. The school day begins at eight and ends at four, which includes a two hour lunch; during that time students may leave the campus. All students have ten subjects of study. Not all subjects are treated with the same amount of time, such as six hours of math and only one hour of music per week. Once the student has chosen a field such as science or math, the student would be set on a course. This idea is similar to college when choos- ing a major. Another contract that Vickie had pointed out was that the attitude students had towards their teachers. The Swedish students respected their teachers quite a lot. No one would complain when the teacher would assign homework. But it was not uncommon for one to call the teacher by their first name. In Sweden, the students would remain in the same classroom for the entire school day, I liked this because it gave me the chance to get to know my classmates. Vickie also commented, The Swedish people arc very laid back, they appear to be very relaxed and serene, I found that very comforting. Vickie stated that one of the reasons that the Swedith seemed to be so laid back is that they spoke so softly. At first all my friends were asking me to lower my voice, later I even noticed that I could recognize other Americans, who had just come over, talking from inside the house — and they were outside!!! Vickie plans to attend San Jose State and majoring in aeronautics, which is the study of aircraft, both flying and making. I will always remember that school year in Sweden, I believe that it has helped me in many ways. Although it was a very exciting adventure, my friends arc here, and this is my home. 52 Seniors Sherry O’Neal Una Pictora Milia Verba Em. Michael O’Neill I don't remember. I don't recall.
