Mirror, Mirror Drew Taylor Mirror, mirror, who is that I see? A reflecting stranger gazing upon me. Fingers start to twitch, my heart skips a beat; A hand reaches outward for us to meet. What if it knows? Who will it tell? I’ve got to get away from under its compelling spell. I can’t move a muscle, my eyes are fixed; It knows too much, I have to be quick — Mirror, mirror, what do I see? A bloody hand and broken glass staring up at me. Marc Miller A Single Word Kim Fisher You, have come and gone, last time for a week, this time a little longer, a month or so. You, I don’t understand, I tried so hard to make it all right nothing seemed to work. You, will never come again, if you should I will utter one single word, goodbye. ‘‘I told them, I said ‘You all ready done destroyed my plant and animal life. Y'all can go back to where you came from.’ Then they said something about their planet and then they closed the door and flew off.” Starnes leaned back in his chair. “Now, you say that they said something about their planet. Do you know what planet they came from?” Sure I do!” Which one is that?” “Earth, said Jones, confidently. Are you certain? asked Starnes. They done told me themselves.” Starnes closed his notepad. Thank you, Mr. Jones. That will be all. Do you have any questions? Jones got up. Yes, as a matter o' fact. You see, I’m too old to rebuild my barn by myself and all my animals is killed. Farming's the only thing I got to make a living. So I was wondering if I might be able to get some money from the government so as to start my farming again?” Starnes got up and walked Jones to the door. I'm sure that you’ll have no problem getting reimburs- ed, Mr. Jones.” Jones walked out of the building content. The matches were still in his pocket. He had succeeded. Legerdemain 249

Goodbye Angela D'Agostino I’m an old man dying My family gathers I suffer pain and no one cares. Deep claws imbed themselves into my flesh, tearing my soul, my blood, my skin. Agony as I lay being devoured by the Nameless Demon. Sharp knives of pain stab my stomach finding themselves in my innards. Doctor, will he be all right?” my loving daughter I’m afraid there's not much we can do. Life is a cancer. It rots away our being. It leaves behind the dissolved waste that will devoured by — the buzzards of the world. They flock to see me go. Good bye nuclear energy good bye war good bye chemicals good bye hydrogen bomb good bye to all the things that made life worth living. Children, Wives, Cousins, Uncles, Aunts. A silent farewell to all those who cared enough. Even if you hated me, at least you were thinking of me Agony. The pain grows. Mommy, is grandpop gonna die? I’m afraid so, honey. Mo, no more goodbyes. I always hated long goodbyes, and this one has lasted my whole life. It was the first word I had learned. Dada, Mama ... Goodbye Legerdemain 251
