Introduction 3 4 Introduction Yearbook Dedication This year's yearbook dedication is award- ed to Mr. Bill Sheehy. This kind-hearted man gives his students not only a classical education, but something just as valuable, his friendship. Bill Sheehy teaches English, but in his classroom some of the most important lessons taught arc those that the students learn about themselves. He makes students ask questions about themselves that they had never asked before. Mr. Sheehy has been teaching for many years and has developed an insight into the problems that high school students suffer from. Not only does he understand these problems, but he tries his best to help the students solve them. Bill Sheehy is very involved in school- related activities. He is an organizer of the Literary Club, and also a trustee on the Oak Grove School Board. In addition to his talents as a teacher, ad- visor and school board member. Mr. Sheehy is also an actor. He was in the San Jose Com- munity Theater production of The Un- sinkablc Molly Brown. We arc honored to have Bill Sheehy on the school staff, and very proud to dedicate the 1982-83 Compendium to such a fine man. oppoiittpngt Ufa pleased to be back to school. oppoiitt pagt top right: Sauntering off to class. Yearbook Dedication 5 Arena Scheduling On August 30. 1982. the traditional mad dash for the right teachers and courses began, commonly known as Arena Schedul- ing. Although, this hectic event was well planned, most students experienced a very trying day. The seniors crowded in with scribbled schedules and hopeful expressions. They were followed, in no particular order, by other classes. The forceful and the bewildered, the determined and the haphazard, all found that a little compromise was clearly needed. All of the students wandered from table to table and pleaded with teachers and counselors for courses that they thought were imperitive for their future. The look of relief on some students' faces when they found out that Humanities II was full was in- spired sympathy indeed. Other courses that caused students some frustration were Rapid Reading — Critical Thinking, fourth period Government and Advanced Biology. Eventually the frustration, relief and final copies were all in order. The 1982-1983 school year was fixed ... on paper anyway. cum i semm Arena Scheduling ff ting gt, if Mimi Grimmer and Howard Trekell discuss Mimi’s schedule. fpitugsgr, huitm left: ST doe not discriminate against on the basis of religion, color, sea, or weather their sugar coated or jelly filled fgtiilt gsgt. butem right: Beacky Hopkins and Julie Jensen share a moment of happiness while signing- up for consumer math. Opening Day An exceptionally fine school year began with feelings of anxiety, determination and high hopes. When students walked on to the campus they noticed that not only was the gym painted this fall's most fashionable color, pineapple, but so were all the other buildings. Last year's senior prank remnants still lingered about the campus. A sudden realization of obligation was strong, another year of hard work and extreme fun. The morning assembly would have been so much more exciting if the P.A. system had worked. Not that anyone cared to hear the assembly; most just wanted to watch the spirit leaders. After a long, futile attempt to read Mr. Vicrra's lips, the next challenge was to find one's class schedule. To get their schedules, many students had to wait in line for hours, outside the library. Not only did the students wait but so did some of their parents. By mid-day Mr. Ncimillcr realized that the masses were too large for the limited number of counselors to handle; he sent the overload of students and parents home. Following tradition, the school day ended early, and students eagerly left the campus. The end of opening day became the beginning of the 1982-1983 school year. Opening Day 10 The Homecoming Game The Homecoming week ended with the football game against Independence. All was not lost even though the Saints lost badly to the top-ranked team in the C.C.S. Still, the football team played respectably. The coronation of the homecoming queen and king took place during half-time in the football game. The members of the homecoming court were Lewis Chavez. Joe Koeplin, Steve Koch, Mike Hornsby, and Rich Vogel. The princesses were Chris Mor- phew, Joan Palmer. Kelly Reese. Chris Rosker and Cathy Toscano. Last year's Queen, Renee Blue, was there to crown Chris Rosker, this year's Queen and Rich Vogel as this year's King. I have never seen so much spirit shown by all the classes — I think that the level of enthusiasm was at an all-time high for S.T.” said Commissioner of Spirit, Audrey Sadler. shttn Dazzling smiles flashed by King Richard Vogel and Queen Chris Rosker. right:The 1982-85 Homecoming court: Lewis Chavez.Joan Palmer.Joe Koeplin, Chris Moephew. The A.S.B. officers organized the week's events; which consisted of building decoration, rent-a-Senior days, dressup days, and daily nontime rallies. The rallies were for class competition such as, the balloon stomp, obstacle course, and of course everyone's favorite — twister. Besides Rent-a-Senior day the climax of the week was Thursday. Reach class was responsible for a skit. The theme differed from class to class; the theme for the Freshman class was Annie Get Your Gun, for the Sophomores it was Annie.” the Junior class was Chorus Line, and the Senior skit theme was Grease. Except for the Freshmen, who did not do a skit, all of the productions were very entertaining. Although the Seniors won the spirit week, the Juniors trailed by less than fifteen points. The Sophomores took third, followed by the Freshman class who took last. With even the Freshmen show of spirit, Homecoming week showed a lot about the enthusiasm of the Santa Teresa students, said Senior Class President, Corey Mandell. I think the class of ‘86 has a good start. sktvt lift: No. Angie Pointer is not advertising for a new facial mask. l ft: Mr. Tomer and Mr. Pichardo reveal their twisted sense of humor. Homecoming 13 The Class ef Seniors 15 16 Senior Dedication The class of 1983 had a difficult time deciding to whom the senior section should be dedicated. There were a lot of mixed feel- ings among the seniors, because S.T. has so many great teachers. It seemed that one man stood out in most minds — Mr. William M. Frazer. Every so often a teacher comes along that most of the student body thinks is very special. He has been chosen for his warmth and understanding that he shows for his students. Many students look upon him as a grandfather figure. Thus, he has a nickname of Grandfather Frazer. He has never let the generation gap separate him from his students. Mr. Frazer has been the head of the science department since 1973. He is respon- sible for Santa Teresa having one of the best science departments in the Santa Clara Valley. He is a life-time member of the Na- tional Honor Society and remains very active in this prestigious club. Since Grandpa Frazer is a Death Valley advisor, when the club plans the field trip, the members depend on Grandpa to leave two days early to take care of the red tape, which makes for a more enjoyable time for the club members. Mr. Frazer keeps very active with hobbies such as backpacking, camping, and think- ing. Among other things he has made (from scratch) his own color television set. The Class of '83 is very proud of our teachers, and especially proud to have a man such as Mr. Frazer on the Santa Teresa facul- ty. We thank you. Mr. Frazer for your help and guidance. The class of 1983 appreciates the many hours you have dedicated to our school. Seniors 19 I Senior Suyoung Baik Spotlight For many reasons Suyoung Baik has been voted Most likely to succeed by the class of '83. One of the reasons is that she has been involved in stu- dent government since her sophomore year in school. As a Sophomore she was the class secretary-treasurer. As a junior she was the class's supreme court justice; and in her last year at ST, she was the senior class secretary-treasurer. With Suyoung's outstanding grade point average she has been a member of the National Honor Society for two years. She has also been involved in C.S.F., in which she was vice-president in her junior year. As a senior she became the club's president. She was the secretary general of the Santa Clara Model United Nations for two years. Suyoung was also a member of the In- ternational Relations Club for four years, and as a senior she was the club president. Another club in which she made a large contribution to was the literary club. Suyoung was also a decathathlete. She was award winning member in the Academic Decathlon. She was awarded medals in English, literautre and grammar. Since she exercised such great talent in the English field, ST's English department awarded her for literary talents in her junior year. She is also a fine tennis player. She could be found out on the court with Cathy Toscano, since they were the school's number one doubles tennis team. She was a netter for three years. Not only did Suyoung play tennis, but she also played badminton in her junior year. It would appear that she would not have any time to do much else, but Suyoung does volunteer work at the Santa Teresa Hospital. The class of '83 has been super — I have made many memories along with this talented group. In the past the clock tower has been able to provide accurate time, but in the 1982-83 school year the tower has not been able to complete the service for which it was so rightfully meant. The tower (by the way his name is Ted.) has been the subject of ridicule this year. Ted said that he did not mind, I can take a licking. Although he docs feel very badly about not being able to fulfill to his one and only grave responsibility, he claims that it is not his fault, While they were slopping all that gross pineapple colored crud all over me — WELL you could just imagine how I felt — it seemed as though all the time had just stopped. My father, you know — as in father time, well he is a typical parent and said that it's just an illness that all kids my age get — Senioritis. But I serious- ly don't believe that's the reason, for not being able to expose the correct time. Since Ted had so much time on his hand, he got a job at a time clock at EMC. But because he had been consistently late he was terminated. All was not lost, soon he found a less time-consuming job working for Tyme-Share Co. Ted said that he is very sorry that the class is going their separate ways, It is hard to believe that it has been four years — TEMPIS FUGIT!!! 24 Seniors Nathan Chukes To train and gain progress. you will main- tain. teach and learn, have concern, go to the top. do not stop. Awards such as Junior Athlete of the Year, the Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award, and Most Valuable Player on the football team two years in a row. I think physical fitness is very important, I enjoy the team sports such as foot- ball and baseball. Everyone should get involved with some sort of sport or activity, it keeps the mind in shape along with one's body.” Steve has received other honors such as Junior Prom King. He was also on the Homecoming court in his senior year. I will never forget how friendly the class of '83 is, and I really appreciate some of the fine friendships 1 have made.” Steve has been involved in school activities since his freshman year. He has participated in both football and baseball. In these two painstaking sports, Steve has done outstandingly well. Because Steve has achieved so much in so many fields, he was voted Bcst-All-Around by his peer group, the senior class. The team has placed first in the Mount Hamilton Athletic league for nine years. As a freshman Andrea was voted most outstanding athlete. This year the relay teams, in which she was a member, won the award of All American. She has been involved in swimming for 12 years. She is also a member of the Amateur Athletic Union; she has been voted most valuable in the age group of 15-18. During the summer Andrea is a lifeguard and a swim instruc- tor. Another swim related event that she is involved herself in is SCUBA div- ing. I don't get the chance to dive very often. I believe it to be one of the most exciting things that I do, SCUBA diving is an exciting adventure!!! Andrea has been in the fellowship club and the ski club for all of her high school years. My senior year has been my favorite because during the other years of school, I did not get to feel the camaraderie that I have felt this year. Andrea believes that Tom Lebherz has been the driving force behind to do so well in swimming and in her studies. She has maintained a 3.0 and has applied to San Diego State and Long Beach State. I hope other seniors have felt the sense of belonging that I have. I would like to wish the other class good-luck; S.T. has much to offer and I think that everyone should try and take full advantage of it. 32 Seniors Miriam Grimmer Michael where's my Carmel honeymoon? Seniors 47 Senior Kathryn Kuchenbrod Spotlight Kathryn Kuchenbrod's interests seem to lie in fine arts. When growing up, she learned how to play the flute and the piano. She also has been involv- ed in musical plays; she has been cast in musicals such as West Side Story, Music Man, Pirates of Penzance, and Annie Get Your Gun. In her junior year Kathryn was on the school newspaper staff, The Esprit. As a senior, she became Editor-in-Chief. Because she has had three years of French and a gift for writing, she also helped with the editing, writing, and publication of the French newspaper that is put out by the campus's French Club. Not only does she enjoy journalism, but also fiction. She is also an ac- tive member of the literary club. This club puts out a magazine called Legerdemain. Other in which she participates are Students of the World, Na- tional Honor Society and Quill and Scroll Honor Society. Kathryn spends so much of her time in extra-curricular activities, it is amazing that she has any time for her classes, yet she has maintained a 3.5 grade point average. She plans to go to Europe this summer, and next fall I hope to be attending an Art school in Los Angeles. People should try and pride themselves on their own individuality. A teacher who made me realize that each person has a 'uniqueness' was my journalism teacher, Ms. Neujahr, to whom I am grateful. 48 Phil McIntyre It's been great there past 4 years, thanks foe the memories. Gunnar Olsen Una Pictura Milia Verba Est. Seniors 51 Senior Vickie Gardner Spotlight Vickie Gardner was an exchange student, and spent her junior year in Sweden. While submerged in the Swedish culture, she encountered a very different way of life. In contrast with our education system, the Swedish seem to have a much more difficult system. The school day begins at eight and ends at four, which includes a two hour lunch; during that time students may leave the campus. All students have ten subjects of study. Not all subjects are treated with the same amount of time, such as six hours of math and only one hour of music per week. Once the student has chosen a field such as science or math, the student would be set on a course. This idea is similar to college when choos- ing a major. Another contract that Vickie had pointed out was that the attitude students had towards their teachers. The Swedish students respected their teachers quite a lot. No one would complain when the teacher would assign homework. But it was not uncommon for one to call the teacher by their first name. In Sweden, the students would remain in the same classroom for the entire school day, I liked this because it gave me the chance to get to know my classmates. Vickie also commented, The Swedish people arc very laid back, they appear to be very relaxed and serene, I found that very comforting. Vickie stated that one of the reasons that the Swedith seemed to be so laid back is that they spoke so softly. At first all my friends were asking me to lower my voice, later I even noticed that I could recognize other Americans, who had just come over, talking from inside the house — and they were outside!!! Vickie plans to attend San Jose State and majoring in aeronautics, which is the study of aircraft, both flying and making. I will always remember that school year in Sweden, I believe that it has helped me in many ways. Although it was a very exciting adventure, my friends arc here, and this is my home. 52 Seniors Sherry O’Neal Una Pictora Milia Verba Em. Michael O’Neill I don't remember. I don't recall. He has taken every lab science course offered at ST, and grade-wise has done well in all of the difficult courses. Included in the Lab science courses in the trip to Death Valley. With Fred's grade point average of 3.75 he will more than likely go to U.C. Davis or Santa Clara. He plans on major- ing in biological science and then medical school. I enjoy life science, I believe it to be the most interesting out of all the other sciences.” When not inside Mr. Melching's Advanced Biology class dissecting baby pigs, Fred can be found out on the soccer field. He has played four years of soccer and has contributed much of his skill to the well known terrors of the turf. In his junior year he was awarded Most Improved' for talents he ex- ecuted on the playing field. Fred also plays on a team called Express; his team has been invited to go play in England against one of their league teams. We plan on going and winning. It's a great opportunity to show England that Americans arc great ball players as well. Other sports that he enjoys are cross-country and track. He has been a cross-country racer for three years, two of which he has run varsity. In track he can be seen running the Vt mile, mile, and two mile events. Everyone had someting different to offer, says Mike Gurlter. It seems that Mike has met so many interesting people because of his involvement in school activities. He is one of the all important tight ends on ST's football team. He has dedicated three years to football, two of which he has played varsity. Mike has been skiing for many years and has been an active member in the ski club. He preferred going on trips with the club because, “by having a whole group of people going together, with the sole purpose of having fun — it became very exciting. Mike stated that he was sorry to see the club go in his senior year. Although he is quite busy with football, ski Club and his part-time job. Mike manages to do well scholastically. He plans to attend college next fall. He is undecided about his major, but believes that education is very impor- tant. A high school diploma is not enough, every person should take it upon himself to learn more, 'broad-mindncss' is a valuable quality to have.” When not in school, he takes to the outdoors for such things as camping and hiking. His favorite teacher was Mrs. Hoglund. Not only did I learn a great deal for her. but one felt that you were her friend. 60 Seniors Cherise Smith Una Pictura Milia Verba Est. Mark is currently involved with four bands: The Blue Starlight, Silky Sounds, Denny’s Combo, and The Randy Tyler Combo. Mark is very versatile; each group requires a different type of music such as jazz, soft rock, and the sound that he refers to as elevator music. Mark has out six demo tapes with the Randy Tyler Combo. Such songs as Girl From Impanema, Misty,” Lady, Glen Miller Medley, and Proud Mary,” Make up the tapes. The other demo record was a song the group composed themselves called Get Off It. For the past thirteen years Mark has practiced no less than two hours a day. It depends on how much homework I have. He plans to attend San Jose City College to get his two-year degree, then transfer to San Jose State. Mark's major will be Business Administration. I've had two really good years in high school — my Senior year and my Sophomore year. He also commented that Mr. Wells and Mr. Lemon both have really helped him in the music field and with his college plans. Outside music and school, I enjoy the bowling league and the church group I belong to — but most of all I enjoy time with my girlfriend. 64 Seniors Brian Verner Una Pictura Milia Verba Em. Seniors 67 Senior A lyse Bushman Spotlight Alysc Bushman said that her senior year was her favorite, because of the many events in which she took part. Such things like the Academic Decathalon. in which she placed third in essay writing. Another event that Alyse enjoyed was the folk concert. Other activities that Alyse took part in were the D« h Valley field trip, National Honor Society, CSF, cross country, and track. There are two teachers that I have a great feeling of respect for, Mr. Passalacqua and Mrs. Neilson. Both of these teachers have gone out of their way to help me not only with my education, but in general life. With Alyse's grade point average of 3.8 she has been accepted to Brigham Young University in Utah. Along with education, Alyse believes that religion is important, which is why she is involved with her church and the social events that are related to it. When I go to college, a part of my life will have ended. High school will be part of my past, and yet I will always stand out as a positive experience — one of the best 1 have had. This especially goes for my senior year and all the things and all the people that have made it what it has been. Mike Haggerty was a co-captain on the Academic Decathlor Team. His overall team took the respectable place of third, out o 26 high schools. Individually he took gold medals in science anc economics, silver medals in fine arts and in English. Ir mathematics, Mike was awarded third place. With his obvious in terests in science and math he has won many awards in the Eastsidi Union School District and Santa Clara County math contest. In hi senior year, not only did he have a heavy academic schedule, but hi attended San Jose State at the same time. He took two calculu classes and two physics classes. Remarkably enough he still manag ed to keep his grade point average of 4.0. Mike is also very knowledgeable in the computer field, h teaches computer programming to elementary school student! The fifth graders of San Anselmo Elementary School have th privilege of Mike's coaching in the computer field. Because he is s knowledgeable in the computer field his parents take full advan tage of his skills by having him write programs for their compute software business. Mike plans to attend Cal Berkeley and to major in Engineering The thing that I will always remember about ST is how persons the teachers and students were. 68 Seniors a juoi M t JlfioJL sQ m rm- o cd ■ cd 9 m cxn U3Jl 0 -a 'SquAj ee'-Cei . All the A.S.B. members agree that by be- ing on the student body they have learned a great deal about the school and how it works. As Mike Hornsby said, Being the Commissioner of Athletics. I have learned what responsibility really is. Dawn Neuman comments that, I have learned a lot about our school and how it is run. The A.S.B. officers all agree that, as Lisa Ridgeway said. The council has enjoyed getting to know and work with the students of S.T. and the faculty. It has been a valuable growing and learning experience. A.S.B. president, Cathy Toscano, sums up the feeling of the A.S.B. when she says. It has been an honor to act as your A.S.B. president and to represent the student body of Santa Teresa. With his threat of failure in his class looming over each and everyone of our heads, we somehow found the strength to finish the book and meet our final deadline. Since Mr. Fulton is such a caring person he treated all the students with a great respect, but showed 3 Fatherly concern” for the blonder members of the staff. Tension may have run high, but laziness ran deeper. Leading that crowd were our famed photographers who took countless amounts of pic- tures which were sometimes of no use. They did. however, manage to take enough to fill our year- book. (Anyone need pictures of band members — we got ’em. real cheap!) Sponsors Needy Kids This year, for the first time in Santa Teresa history, many of the members of the Interclub council sponsored two needy children through the Christian Children's Fund. The Interclub Council consists of the presidents of the resident clubs on cam- pus as well as the class vice-presidents and is chaired by the ASB vice-Prcsident. This year's council worked closely with Mrs. Quita Cabrerra to get the project off the ground. Each club par- ticipation contributed twenty-five dollars towards the program. The two children sponsored are fourteen year old Gregoria Panozo of Bolivia, and four year old Bunrirmg Khadsuk of Thailand. The project provides relief from their difficult living conditions in the form of food, clothing, education, medical care as well as other needs. The Council feels that the project is a rewarding and worthwhile experience, which they hope future councils will continue. a Siderwicz Willetia Crockett Ken Morikawa Kathy Riggle Lisa Pritchard ren Long Sheila Rao Sandy Kowalski Deven Taylor David Keller Supreme Court 'he Supreme Court performs many duties essary to the function of Santa Teresa's stu- t government. The primary job of the court ) interpret the school's constitution. We are responsible also for all student elections, and for checking to make sure that the members of government are maintaining their designated grade point averages. The Supreme Court makes it possible for a student to be heard, to have a voice in the government, if one feels his rights have been violated. As Chief Justice this year, it is my duty to interpret the constitution for the officers of the ASB, to assemble the members of the Supreme Court, and to preside over all Supreme Court activities. Lisa Siderewicz Supreme Court Chief Justice Supreme Court Government Trial You mean you didn't see the other car coming through the intersection before you proceeded? This was a common question posed by attorney in the biannual senior government trials. The trial is the quarter project of participating seniors. The roles of judge, bailiff, witness, defendant and at- torneys are chosen based on class participa- tion and grades, while the is selected in court by the attorneys. There arc two government classes, period three and four, each of which stages a separate trial. This year’s trial was a civil court case. On May 4, 1982 in the intersection of El Camino Real and San Tomas Expressway, car A col- lided into car F. Basically, car A went through a stale yellow light and struck car F, which entered the intersection on a green light but did not see car A. The driver of car A sued car F for the cost of damages to it, for health expesnes and developing background details to build their respective cases with. In both periods, the defense won their cases. Tracy Metts, the plaintiff in period three, was represented by Damon Bushaw, Chris Mulcastcr. The victor, Chris Morphew was successfully defended by Audrey Sadler, Cathy Toscano and Dawn Newman. Sadler stated, Not only was it exciting, but I learn- ed just how the court system works. In fourth period, the defendant Arnold Khan- babian, represented by Corey Mandell, Scott Kouns and Fred Linford, was awarded nine- ty thousand dollars by the jury. Khababian had originally countersued the plaintiff, Tony Salehi, represented by Tracy Wiegand, Angela D'Agostino and Sheila Tobin, for one hundred thousand dollars. Government teacher Mr. Bob Gill commented on the purpose of hosting the trials, It gives the kids a chance to practice the stuff they have learned from the class. Performing Arts This year Mary Romano's performing arts class put on a four-star production of Barefoot in the Park.” The play ran to full houses all three nights of its showing. It was well received by students and faculty alike. The play successfully showcased the talents of all its players, especially the two leads — both of whom arc seniors. All in all. it was an entertaining evening for everyone. Barefoot in the Park played March 10. 11, and 12. The play proved itself to be a wonderful send-off for drama teacher Mary Romano. 82 Government Trial AREFOOr- 1N WE PARK CAST Cone Bratter ........ Understudy...... The turnout was fantastic, comparable to the turnout at the Sadie Hawkins dance. As the ASB Commissioner of Spirit stated, We actually made money this time.” This years’ Halloween set a precedent for all the other activities in the 82-83 school year. The success of the Halloween Dance is hoped to spread to next year's class also. As ASB president Cathy Toscano said, Wc'vc started something here that we hope will continue on after we have graduated. Voted most valuable and team co-captain was Cathy Ding. The star setter and other co-captain was Judy Chamberlin. Awarded most inspirational was Karen Reyes. The highlight of the year was the game against the varsity; the F S only lsot by two points. All of the girls played very well. I am go- ing to lose some valuable team members to the varsity, and the others, I hope, will be back next season. oach of e Year 'Mr. DeLeon, he's a great asset to the team, couldn't have done it without him! That is at Matt Singer had to say about 1983's Coach he Year, Mr. Les DeLeon. At. Mr. DeLeon has been coaching for eight rs and has produced a winning team almost ry year. Without Mr. DeLeon's wisdom and ex- ence in the sport, the 1983 soccer team ild not have done as well as they did. Mr. .con shows great respect and loyalty for his n. The 1982-83 Saints started very slowly this year; going into the second game of League with only 5 wins and 7 losses. But persistence and hard work paid off for the Saints as the team record climbed to 15 wins and 12 losses. The Saints took se- cond place in MHAL, losing the champion- ship game in triple overtime to In- dependence 53 to 51. From there the Saints entered the CCS play offs, defeating Wilcox High 49-47. The only teams that the Saints lost to were Silver Creek and In- dependence. The game that was the most ex- citing of all was against Silver Creek, where the final score was 35-33 in a hard fought game that took three over-time periods to complete. It was a very unique game; not on- ly did the Saints go into overtime, the star- ting team all fouled out before the game was over. The Saints had to go into overtime with second and third team players who played their hearts-out against the starting five from Silver Creek. The last game of the year was the impor- tant one. The Saints had to win to be able to get into the play-offs to determine the Frosh-Soph Championship. The Saints came up short by one point, the final score was 48-47. Overall the Frosh-Soph team had an ex- cellent season with players who cared about each other and practiced hard. Outstanding players for the Saints were Yvonne Stange, Andrea Lorenz, Sisinc Toum. The Saints can look forward to another winning season next year. Returning Freshmen who have the skills to become outstanding players are Marie Orozco, Jean- nette Schultz, Tina micolai, and Diane Stewart. They lost the first three games of the league, losing by three to In- depcndance and by one to Oak Grove, before winning four out of their next six games. our Football and Wrestling seasons we can only use one word — AWESOME. We worked hard to prepare for our seasons! During the summer we practiced in the morning so that we would be ready for U.S.A. Spiritlcading Camp in Sunny Santa Barbara. We went to camp with the Fall Song girls and the Winter Cheerleaders. Together we won a Combined Spirit Stick and Our sign won first place too! Along with the Winter Cheerleaders we won a Most Enthusiastic award. Camp was a blast! We started off the Year with a Bang! — and Can't Be Beat! We would like to thank Everyone for our great seasons. REMEMBER: We Are Awesome! Fall Song Girls We had an AWESOME time practicing for camp this year. It was a real pleasure to have gone with the Fall and Winter cheerlcading squads. We attended USA spiritleading camp in sunny Santa Barbara. Camp was an exciting experience for all of us, and winning the spirit stick twice was tru- ly memorable. When we got back it was already time to prepare for the football season — and we were ready. The games were really exciting and our squad was always psyched for victory! Cheering at the games also brought us to be close friends. Even outside our squad we had lots of fun together. We were really proud to have sup- ported such a great team and to have had the fun and close squad that we did. We all agree that the '82 football season and the class of'83 Can't be Beat! We then won an award for our posters, but most of all we were surprised to find out that our competition routine American Girls placed third from many other school competitors. I sit among piles of letters and photographs and memories of all the wonderful times we spent together. I sit alone and think about you and remember. I can remember back to when we first met. The newness of everything getting to know one another sharing past memories and making new ones of our own. And that lovely feeling I felt when we first got together never ended. That feeling of disbelief and complete happiness that someone as beautiful as you actually loved me and belonged to me. And I want to thank you for making me feel special and loving and needing me and especially, for being mine. And I want to thank you also for giving me the strength to go on with my life without you. I know you are with me in my heart and someday soon I will be back in your arms where I belong. And we'll be together as one. Forever. So you finally met the girl of your dreams! Blonde? Blue eyes? Short, cute and cuddly? In love are you? Well let me ask you. Does she know your name? Do you have her telephone number? I didn't think so! Sit down. Take off your coat and shoes. Relax. I ’m going to tell you how you can have this honey eating out of the palm of your hand. You see, there are certain dos and don’ts about dating. I could name a hun- dred of them and you still may not hear any new ones. But, I have three very important tips that are guaranteed to help you in your quest for the perfect date. There are some particular areas where everyone but The most frequent daters are a little shaky. These areas are asking the girl to go out with you, dining at the restaurant, and the good night kiss. Let's start off with the hardest part, asking the girl to go out. Once you have chosen that magic girl, remember this: SHE IS ONLY A GIRL! Don't make her feel any more or less than that. When you finally get up enough nerve to ask her out, look right into her eyes. If you don’t, she might think you were asking someone else out like the girl next to her and then you are in real trouble. Before you ask her, you will be shak- ing like a pair of wind up teeth. So don’t hold her hand or she will feel how drenched your palms are with sweat. When you are asking her, come right out and say it. Don’t use innuendos or play guessing games. If you feel your cheeks begin to quiver and pulsate, and your face feels like it got caught in an elevator, start again and speak clearly and asser- tively right to her. There is nearly nothing worse than asking a girl out and she says What? in reply! Okay, you got her to go out with you. Now what? , you may ask. First, you take your date to dinner. Please try to avoid Burger King! When you are ordering, be sure to order for her first. An example is this: “The lady will have the linguine with white clam sauce and a coke with no ice.” Then you order for yourself. And I will have the lobster thermidor and a tall glass of seven- up. If you are not of age, do not even think about ordering alcohol. If they ask for your identification, you will feel like a complete jerk. Also, when you are about to speak, make certain that you don’t have any food particles stuck in your teeth. It is very appalling. After you finish the meal, offer your date some dessert. They never accept dessert! And don’t forget to leave a generous tip. Perhaps, now, you will go dancing, bowling, or to a movie. When your evening winds down and it’s time to take her home, there is one more thing to remember. This last thing is the good night kiss. Many guys don't even dream of kissing on the first date. However, if you follow my plan, kissing will be no major occurrence. The first thing you do when you pull up in front of her house is turn off the car and take a deep breath. If your heart kee pounding like it is, your date m call a paramedic, thinking that y were having a coronary. Get out the car and walk around to the otf side. Open the car door for h Walk with her to her front door a give her a tiny peck on the che Do not get carried away by maki it a long and passionate one. Th« is nothing more embarrassing th having your date's father cor outside, thinking there is a robt out there, and interrupting y marathon kiss. Not forgetting to s the usual things like I had a v nice time tonight , etc ... you i her you will talk to her tomorrow some how makes girls fall asle faster. Pretty amazing, isn’t it though: you will just remember these thi areas, it can be that easy! So, go out and get her tiger! Oh, a remember: SHE IS ONLY A GIRL! 242 Legerdemain 'luttered Comer of My Soul iff Suddjian im floating in a sea of ruthless stares; ley pound on my body and engulf my person — m left alone. sople look at me, yet their looks bore holes irough my body and their eyes focus on something lat can’t be seen. eel like screaming and releasing tension — awing all these people’s attention to me — vould thrive on their pity. st I know that I shall remain quiet, silently eeding — My heart shall cry out in unheard pain ;cause of the hurt I feel. ut my life spring will not run dry in this crowded, nely room, and my hurt will be pushed into uttered corners of my soul. I wake up early this morning. I turn and look out of my window. Sunshine and clouds are there to greet me, and make the day warm and bright. I look around my room at boxes of clothes and clutter which used to have a place in this room of mine. Four years of my life have gone by like one week. Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years at high school. Friends and Teachers whom I’ll never forget. I stop — I don’t want to cry. Strength is the key. I must be strong, especially today. I dress and go downstairs into the kitchen. “Hi. ‘‘Hi, sleep well?” “Yeah, Okay. What are you cooking?” Eggs, bacon, muffins. Mm, sounds good.” I hate eggs and all of the tradi- tional breakfast foods, but I keep silent. I feel I mustn’t stop my mom’s good intentions. My sister runs into the kitchen and breaks the peaceful calm by asking if she inherits my phone. She doesn’t wait for an answer; she never does. “I promise I’ll pay for the bills and just think — I’ll never be using your phone — I always talk for too long and now that Kim will be gone ...” That did it. My mom ran out of the room crying and muttering words of her sadness. I take over the breakfast, burn the bacon and the whole kitchen looks like a mess. I go up to my room and begin to pack my things. My mom comes in and walks around, outlining the pic- tures, carefully touching the furniture. I can’t believe you’re really going. “Mom, please...” “Sorry.” I keep silent, I can’t let her know how I really feel. She thinks I am almost an adult, a responsible, trustworthy person. I tell her I have to go now, and walk out to the car. Quick, hurried goodbyes because I insist I’m late already. I drive away. About half an hour I begin to think, really think, and reflect on the morn- ing. What an idiot I guess I could have shed a tear or two, it was so hard not to. Strength is the pits! I turn around. I open the door, and stand face to face with my mom. “I forgot something.” I rush into her arms, not feeling embarrassed or ashamed, but rather secure and warm. I did forget something. Legerdemain 243 ON TUPPERWARE: Angela D'Agostino What is our great nation com- ing to when the youth of America are subjected to the tauntings and temptations of local Tupperware representatives? As a rule, I try to avoid Tupperware whenever possible. Recently, though, I was invited to a Tupperware Party and, hungry for adventure on a dull Friday night, my curiosity got the better of me and I naively resigned myself to go. I was not aware of the horrors that would take place that night. I, and the friend” who brought me, were the first to arrive. Accor- ding to ancient Tupperware tradi- tion the first person to arrive gets the Early Bird” prize. My friend Miss —received a key ring shoehorn, and a hook to hang it on, I got zilch. After a while the other guests arrived. One usually thinks of a Tupperware party as being attend- ed by old ladies — maybe a few newlyweds or young mothers, but not in this case. All the guests were still in high school. It frightened me to think that Tup- perware had gained control over the next generation — the future of our nation. It thought No, these young people would never be taken in by this Tupperware sham. Remember the ’60’s? These kids will surely rebel.” Little did I know how wrong I was. After the Tupperware spokesperson gave out her bag of useless items to us all (I got a sew- ing kit, egg separator, key chain, and back scratcher), she started in on her pitch. She was smooth all right. She loosened us up with a few games first (that’s the party part of the Tupperware Party.) After the first ten minutes, An accounting of a living nightmare though, it was all business. We were bombarded with slogans: locks in freshness, great gift items, and burp seal.” In minutes she had all the teens in the room reduced to a bunch of mindless zombies, ready to buy anything. The lady almost had me convinced that I really needed a green, plastic jello mold. The represtnative paused for a second and in that moment I had time to remove myself from my stupor and look around me. The sight I saw turned the darkest dep- ths of my soul to ice. Here was a group of high school students sit- ting, entranced, nodding their heads in time with that soft- spoken sorceresses sales pitch. The venim-tongued representative went on about the wonders of plastic cookie bowls in the all new colors.” The look of utter devotion to Tupperware in the eyes of these young people sent shivers up and down my spine. I felt like screaming, You guys are worse than those dang Moonies!! but, I knew it wouldn’t do any good — they were hooked. Even though I didn’t fall for any of the woman's sales pitch, I still felt guilty as I walked out the door with all those free gifts. I was hav- ing second thought — maybe I could use a set of plastic measur- ing cups — no, no, I must be strong. I barely got out that night with my conscience intact. I had taken their gifts, eaten their food and not ordered a thing, but when would ever use a plastic jello mold? •Name withheld on request from lawyer. Day Camp Kids Heather Dillon I have often heard people s that all children are the sam however, this insinuation is f from the truth. Kids come in variety of shapes, sizes, and c ors, and especially personalitie each distinctly unique. Daycan seems to attract at least one every type of child. Sadler A gentle gray haired man stood in front of a small passageway check- ing off peoples’ names as the guests made their way through. No one was allowed to bring anything along with him, 'only the clothes on their back.’ Hello Mike, what’s all this about?’’ one of the young guests politely asked the gentleman as he was checking for that person’s name on the computer read out sheet. The seemingly kind souled man graceful- ly flipped the pages with his very wrinkled hands. On his left hand he wore a very simple gold band — a long lost symbol of an outdated tradition that had started before computers recorded history. Under artificial lights, the ring did not shine as brightly as it should have. Well, David, you will find out soon enough. You will come to realize that you are a very lucky man. The gentleman checked off his name and asked him to go into the auditorium. Somehow all the guests had the impression that they were attending a seminar or maybe a day lecture. Mike had tried to prepare himself for this day and felt that he was handling the situation very well. After he checked in almost all of their chosen guests, Mike had a sud- den surge of panic. 'Am I the only person checking in people. Did I have the whole list — or just half?’ Mr. Thomas, take over for me, I have to make a phone call!” Who can I call, who would know? His thoughts raced. He found a phone and called the President. Sir, this is Mike Conley. Was I the only person checking in the elected guests? Why, what’s the problem?” “Sir... Mr. Conley had a feeling of great failure; he had such loss in his heart. Sir, who was in charge of the computer selection? There was a long silence. The president put him on hold and went to find the name that was in such great need. Why hadn’t I checked it myself. I should have called my wife. The day that Mike had decided not to tell his wife made him disgusted with himself. Because of the conversation with the President, it appeared as if it had been a good choice. Now he was positive that he had made the wrong decision. He had been checking over his figures when the president had entered. Even though he had been selected, he still turned his voice to say — Mr. President, production will be finished next week. The computer has elected the persons to .. . ’’ Yes, the President cut him off, very good. How much time is left before the ozone layer is completely diminished?” Mike’s gentle nature was very ap- parent. He got up from the leather chair and somberly walked toward the book case. While facing the shelves, he dropped his head and rubbed his face. His face was filled with lines that had only come with time and experience. The gold band on his left finger was bright; Mike pulled his hands away and with his left thumb he fingered the ring. The scientist said at the most three days. He let out a large sigh. Minutes seemed to go by like days. Sir, may I ask you something . .. Something personal? He did not give the President time to answer. How did you keep the world's sad ending from your wife and son? How can you look them in the eye and know that they are not of the chosen? He turned slowly to face him. Mike’s facial expression showed great despair; one could tell that he was not worried about the Presi- dent’s wife and child — but about his own. Mr. Conley, I won't allow it to af- fect me, I have to make decisions. You may not agree with my manner or my method but I am doing what I believe is best. Let me make one thing perfectly clear, the President went on to say that he loved his son and his wife. He had no compassion in his voice. His explanation left Mr. Conley numb. The President interrupted Mike’s thoughts with the name of the computer programmer. “By the way Mr. President, you’ll need to address the elected in 45 minutes. Mr. Conley found himself lost in the dome city, frantically trying to find the programmer. There seemed to be many people in the halls, which made Mr. Conley’s lost feeling deepen. He recognized Mr. Tomas, the man who took over while he made the phone call. Is everyone in? Mr. Conley asked. Yes sir, Davis almost missed out, but he made it — the doors are sealed right on time. There was a cheerful note in his voice. Mike thanked him and asked for directions to the restroom. Once there Mr. Conley got sick. What will become of this city — our New World? All of the elected members were led into the auditorium. The President walked up to the microphone. “None of you know why you are here, but you will all serve as a vital unit for this city’s survival. We have shocking news, more shocking than you can imagine. He took a deep breath, The Earth’s ozone layer, which pro- tects us from the sun’s destructive rays has been destroyed — the dome city started construction Mr. Conley sat in the audience only half listening to the Presi- dent’s speech and half suffering with the obvious fact that he seemed to be the only one who had noticed. He looked down at the dulled ring, and began to weep. The man who programmed the computer had failed. The most valuable, necessary ingredient was missing — females. Legerdemain For I Will Return Heather Dillon Rising illuminated she stands and faces me radiating motherly love. She calls my name ever so softly and whispers: You belong to me, as all earth does on a night like tonight; I and my flickering friends shall reign forever, (or so it seems); Until my brother, prouder and more daring than I, Lifts his head and shouts his glory. You belong to him now, children, And as I slowly attire my sleep-laden eyes, I know you will not resist him, but will go to him in peace; For I will return, when he grows tired. Kindness Eileen Unger Sometimes the words we say are scratches deep, Upon the surface so very bare. We can remove the varnish, but The markings are still there. Some things that have happened we cannot mend, Or restore to former glow. For once the grain is scored in pain, The scars will forever show. The Words We Say Eileen Unger A little word in kindness spoken, A motion or a tear. Has often healed the heart that's broken. And made a friend sincere. She glanced at the piece of paper she was holding. “Mr. Jones? she called out. “Mr. B. F. Jones.” “That’s me,” said a man. He was about fifty years old, a bit overweight and almost bald. He wore baggy overalls and a plaid flannel shirt. He looked totally out of place in the government run office. “Mr. Starnes will see you in just a moment, Mr. Jones, said the recep- tionist and she quickly went back to her work. After a few minutes, a man in a formal suit peeked his head out of the door behind the receptionist. The man was holding a paper. Can I see ...” and he read the name from the list, Mr. Bernard Frederick Jones.” Mr. Jones got up from his seat. He went to the door. “Mr. Jones? he said. I’m Mr. Starnes, Chief Investigator in cases such as yours. Come in. And don’t feel nervous. Jones stepped in the office. You've probably seen such an office. It was wood paneled. There was a window at the far wall. To the right was a desk and behind it, a massive bookshelf. In front of the desk were two other chairs. “Take a seat, Mr. Jones and we can get started.” Mr. Jones looked around the room. On the wall behind him were various plaques; college diploma, presidential awards and the like. Jones took a seat. Now, said Starnes, taking a seat, tell me exactly what happen- ed on the night of July 17 of this year.” Well you see it’s like this, started Jones. “I been living on the plains for years. Ever since I was a kid. My great grandfather used to own the farm that I own now. And my great grandfather, he done built that barn all by himself with his own two hands. Didn't nobody help him.” Could I ask you to get to the point, Mr. Jones. I’m very busy.” Starnes started to scribble words on his notepad. Well, I was just 'bout to. So, anyways, I was going out to the barn to lock everything up. I do that 'bout five o’clock. I went out like I usually do and I was just walking straight. Then from outta nowhere come this big ol’ flying spaceship. Darndest thing. It had lights all over it. And it was right above my farm it was.” Now, said Starnes, leaning toward Jones, “would you say that contained several ornaments on it. This is what I saw, he said ex- citedly. It landed right on top of my bam! Burnt it to a crisp! Crushed all my animals!” He handed the glossies back to Starnes with the picture of the disk on the top. Starnes scratched some comments on his pad. “And you say that you had a face-to-face encounter with these beings. That’s right! After they wrecked my barn they start coming out of their ship. Can you describe what they look- ed like? “Sure can. They was about seven foot tall. All three of the things. They had greenish skin and no hair. They didn’t have no noses only nostrils where there should be a nose. They was wearing shiny outfits and the- this unidentified flying object w from somewhere else than 01 planet. It wasn't just a plane.” No, sir,” said Jones indignanti “It was a spaceship from out space. I know 'cause I talked to tl leader. Starnes pulled out a manila fold from his desk. He opened the fold to reveal some glossies. He hand the photos to Mr. Jones. “Now Mr. Jones. I want you to t me which of the objects in these pi tures resembles the kind of craft yc encountered. Jones thumbed through the pi tures. Then he stopped at one th had a picture of a large disk whi had belts on with all sorts of fane guns and things connected to it.” Starnes took out another folde This one was full of sketches of d ferent types of movie looking alien: “Now, Mr. Jones. Do the same you did with the last set of pictur that I showed you.” Jones looked. He stopped. This is him!” he shouted. “This the leader. He done told me that I was here to observe the animal ai plant life of our planet.” He hand' the drawings back to Starnes. You say that they said this you clearly. They done spoke better thar do!” Starnes scratched something his notebook. What did you say them, if anything?” Legerdemain ‘‘I told them, I said ‘You all ready done destroyed my plant and animal life. Y'all can go back to where you came from.’ Then they said something about their planet and then they closed the door and flew off.” Starnes leaned back in his chair. “Now, you say that they said something about their planet. Do you know what planet they came from?” Sure I do!” Which one is that?” “Earth, said Jones, confidently. Are you certain? asked Starnes. They done told me themselves.” Starnes closed his notepad. Thank you, Mr. Jones. That will be all. Do you have any questions? Jones got up. Yes, as a matter o' fact. You see, I’m too old to rebuild my barn by myself and all my animals is killed. Farming's the only thing I got to make a living. So I was wondering if I might be able to get some money from the government so as to start my farming again?” Starnes got up and walked Jones to the door. I'm sure that you’ll have no problem getting reimburs- ed, Mr. Jones.” Jones walked out of the building content. The matches were still in his pocket. He had succeeded. Mitilar Moseltov said, repeating herself, « she ran up the lane. They are?” Karem Abdul asked Yes, Yes!” Matilana sai repeating herself as always. In the distance Matilana spotted large truck which carried the sta biscuits Karem-Abdul Sergenivet was so fond of for some real wei reason. The three drivers of tl truck were the brothers: Onano Buzzov, and Takitallov, who we descended from the house of Ger Their family had fallen on bad times ever since their father, Turnov, was killed by his serfs — for making waves. Now the three brothers, after having to abandon a life of philosophy, redundancy, theology, and general putzing around, were reduced to hauling stale baked goods to the rich. Through the wonders of modern science, and the blunders of Russian novels we can listen in on what the three brothers are saying as they approach the Manderlybrocuz-cuz estate. ‘‘I am so glad this haul is soon to come to an end!” proclaimed Onanov. “I too, I too,” repeated Takitallov. “I cannot see how you two could possibly be concerned with such trivial things when there is so much important philosophizing and general putzing around to bedone.” Buzzov said as he swerved to avoid a rock and instead hit a small rabbit. “It was not that we are ignorant of our philosophy, dear Buzzov, Onanov responded, “it’s just that we don’t understand you.” “As I have told you before, my dear brothers,” Buzzov said. I con- sider myself a Veggieist. I believe that the true meaning of life can only je found in wilted lettuce. Buzzov, I can really get behind what you are saying, and I respect our space. I expect you’ll mellow jut but I enjoy interfacing with where you are coming from.” Dnanov said as he imagined himself sitting in a hot tub sipping Perrier. “Totally, Totally,’’ added Takitallov. “Look! Proclaimed Onanov, “we approach our destination!! The three brothers sped up the dirt road to Manderlybrocuz-cuz, bits f rabbit flesh flying off the chrome mumper as their speed increased. The brothers stopped and hopped ut of the truck. “You have brought the Biscuits?” jsked Karem-Abdul Sergenitov. “Yes, replied Buzzov. Before we get down to the business, let me introduce you to my hree maids, Karem-Abdul said as he three women approached. Hello, Hello!! Matilana Moseltov aid to Takitallov. I “Greetings, Greetings!!” replied Takitallov. They immediately fell in love and walked off together. Pia Ezadorinsky was next. Pia went up to Onanov and said, “Hello, my name is Pia Ezadorinsky and in the true tradition of all Russian women, I am in love with a man who does not love me, betrothed to a man I do not love, and I am having an affair with the master of this estate — Karem-Abdul Sergenitov. When Karem-Abdul heard this, he had a heart attack and died. Onanov dared to reach out for Pia’s hand. She kneed him but he still held tight saying, “Ggh, marry me! They stood holding hands as Jane Stanislophskyhumbe- minkelchickovantidisistablishme- ntarialism stepped up to Buzzov. My name is Jane Stanisloph .. . Gm, please don’t.” Buxxov said, stepping over the body of Karem-Abdul. “Right, well, I am the rebellious one, I don’t know why, but that's what it says in my character summary.” “I am a Veggiest! and the main character,” Buzzov proclaimed. “Please marry me. I probably don’t really love you, but then again, I voted for Nixon. “What will we do about our dead master?” Pia said. We shall bury him before he smells up the place too much,” Buz- zov answered. “And what about our room and board?” Jane asked. “We shall all! live at the Manderlybrocuz-cuz estate,” Buz- zov said again. “What about the serf’s board?” Onanov asked in a high soprano. Pia kneed him again and his ques- tion remained unanswered. “What is the airspeed velocity of an Australian sparrow?” Jane said, looking deeply into Buzzov’s eyes. “A northbound sparrow, or a southbound sparrow? Jane hit Buzzov with a wilted piece of lettuce and laughed until he got her with a left hook. All the characters were blissful- ly happy until the estate of Manderlybrocuz-cuz burned down and they all died. Legerdemain 253 254 Legerdemain oe 3 .
