Santa Teresa High School PSan Jose, California Volume 8 CONTENTS Introduction Seniors...... Spirit........ Juniors...... Fall Sports . . Winter Sports Spring Sports Sophomores . Activities . . Freshmen . . . 4 Introduction A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step. Lao Tzu Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away . . . Henry David Thoreau Introduction 5 Opening Days The first day of school reflected the changing times at Santa Teresa, as the 1981-82 school year got under way. There was a twinge of excitement in the air, as well as a chorus of groans from students not quite ready to shed their tank tops and don shirts with — ugh — buttons. The school day started fifteen minutes earlier this year and ended fifteen minutes later, as each class was lengthened by five minutes. Members of the freshman class, after locating the gym, attended an orientation rally while the rest of the students picked up their schedules, which they had organized during Arena Scheduling in August. Introduction Listed in the paint charts as Pineapple, and referred to by some students as Gift of the Gulls, the new color of the gymnasium and other buildings on campus caught a few people off guard, but a larger number of returning students were shocked to observe that the hands of the clocktower actually showed the correct time. Books were issued in several classes on the first day of school, and students were not pleased to discover that the lockers were being repaired and would not be ready for use until December. All in all, however, the Saints showed a remarkable display of spirit and good humor, and it was obvious that 1981-82 would be a year to remember. Spirit Week Right: Trina Williams steps into her hat. That’s some ’brero! Below: “I’d walk a Kmel for a smile.” Above: That’s the last time I’ll drink liquid plumber at a party!” Right: Mark Skrbina eats his heart out. 8 Introduction Above left: Color Guard does it — “high and dry.’’ Left: Mark Chambers gets booted off stage at the rally. Below: Pat Openhym takes a “Beak” at the action. Left: Warped seniors steal the show — hands down. Above: Tom Schultz and friends warm up for Hat Day. Introduction 9 The Homecoming Dance Seniors will remember this year’s Homecoming Dance as the best ever. Euphoria from the afternoon football victory over Oak Grove lured a tremendous number of spirited students to the gym Friday night to enjoy the music provided by D.J.’s from radio station K.M.E.L. and to revel in a feeling of togetherness. The presentation of the 1982 Homecoming Court highlighted the festivities. Student Body President Jeff Beck escorted last year’s queen, Lori Beam, into the gym, and together they awarded the titles of King and Queen to Jeff Reed and Renee Blue for representing the ideals of our school. Also recognized in the voting for various outstanding qualities were princesses Loni Gomez, Cheryl Lopez, Lisa Wendt and Trina Williams and princes Tom Schultz, Bruce Vance, Gary Turnipseed, and Mark Skrbina. Right: Homecoming Queen: Renee Blue. Below right: Jeff Reed and Renee flash a royal smile relegating Charles and Diana to obscurity. Below: Renee clutches at her falling crown, while Jeff makes an endorsement for Imperial Margarine. Introduction Left: Bruce Vance escorts Loni Gomez past an admiring audience. Bottom left: While the new queen is crowned by the old, Jeff Beck brushes up on his fortune telling. Bottom right: Jeff Reed and Lisa Wendt arrive at the Homecoming Coronation. Introduction The Homecoming Game Introduction Top left: Tom Schultz returns a key interception. Top right: Rich Vogel and Tom Schultz pressure Oak Grove quarterback. Center right: Linebacker Gary Turnipseed greets the quarterback with an unwelcome Hi, Five-five. Bottom right: Mike Gurtler eludes a desperate tackier. Defense Dominates It has been five years since Santa Teresa beat Oak Grove; however, the Saints got revenge this year by defeating the defending league champions 22-11 on our home field. The game was controlled by an awesome Saint defense, which produced eight quarterback sacks and six interceptions, including three by cornerback Pete Escarcega. The “sack pack” composed of Mike Nydam, Gary Turnipseed, and Jeff Reed accounted for all eight of the sacks. Other outstanding performances were turned in by Hayden Knox, Steve Koch, and Mike Burns. Yearbook Dedication Mr. DeVita Mr. Michael DeVita is the head of the art department at Santa Teresa and was the yearbook advisor for the 1979,1980 and 1981 editions of the Compendium. His devotion to his work has earned him respect and admiration from his colleagues and students; yet this unique man, with all of his responsibilities, still manages to find time for everyone. Mr. DeVita has a wife, Betti, and two children, Michelle and Matthew. Born in San Francisco, he received his AA in art at West Valley College, and then went on to San Jose State where he majored in art and received his teaching credential. Mr. DeVita has been a Deans Scholar and is a member of the California Art Educational Association, as well as the Eastside Art Educational Association. Before coming to Santa Teresa, he taught at Piedmont Hills High School for two years. We on the yearbook staff dedicate the 1982 Compendium to Mike DeVita, because he has dedicated so much of himself to the Compendium in the past. Thanks to his efforts, Santa Teresa has gained a reputation for producing a quality yearbook, and we will always strive to uphold the standards set by Mr. Michael DeVita. Introduction Senior Dedication Mr. Cappelloni When the graduating class of 1982 set out to choose the person to whom we would dedicate our section of the yearbook, we were faced with a difficult decision. Many teachers and administrators have been en- couraging and helpful, but one man in particular has impressed us with his dedication and practical advice. Mr. Nick Cappelloni has been chosen by our class to receive the 1982 Senior Dedication. Mr. Cappelloni teaches Business Machines and Typing II, and is the Work Experience Coordinator for Santa Teresa. He takes it upon himself to help students find jobs, and works with them to resolve employment problems that may arise. Many seniors are grateful for the training they’ve received in his business classes and through the Work Experience program. Mr. Cappelloni attended Santa Clara University, and received his MA at San Jose State. He has been a member of Delta Pi Epsilon, an honorary business organization, as well as the Society for the Advancement of Management, and has been teaching for eighteen years. He is married and has three sons. The class of 1982 is proud to acknowledge the efforts of Mr. Nick Cappelloni, and thank him for his guidance and support. 16 Seniors Senior Class Officers Jenny Mulcaster — Senior Class President: The surge of senior spirit has been overwhelming. It’s been rewarding representing the class of ’82 because people have been real- ly dedicated and taken the initiative to get involved. Our class has shown great unity in working to make the activities this year memorable, to say the least. Michelle Beauchesne — Senior Class Vice-President: The class of 1982 has definitely made this year something to remember. I was able to meet wonderful people (the whole senior class!) and make some very special relationships. I hope you’re all as proud of the class of ’82 as I am. Thanks guys and good luck! Melanie Malick — Senior Class Secretary-T reasurer: I have been the Secretary Treasurer for the Class of ’82 for two years. I have watched us excel in everything we do. Our Senior spirit has been awesome, especially during this year’s “Homecoming Week.” I just want to say, “Thanks class of ’82 for making these four years not only a learning ex- perience, but plain fun!” Seniors Seniors Seniors Jim Metz Undoubtedly an outstanding wrestler, Jim Metz is also an outstanding student. He has manag- ed to maintain a 3.97 grade point average, in addition to developing the physical stamina necessary to excel in such a difficult sport. Jim started wrestling in his freshman year, because as he says, “It’s one sport where you don’t have to be too big.” His size didn’t seem to affect his athletic ability, however, as Jim went on to become Santa Teresa’s Most Improved Wrestler the year after. He has placed in League tournaments, and has competed in the regional tour- nament. In his junior year, he went all the way to the Central Coast Section, and last summer Jim qualified for the Junior National Tournmanet held in Iowa; he was one of three representatives in his weight class for the entire state of California. Jim hopes to receive a wrestling scholarship to Stanford University or San Jose State, and eventually become a computer engineer. “Wrestling has really given me a lot of discipline,” he says, “and I feel ready to tackle just about anything.” Senior Spotlight Gayla Ivery When Gayla Ivery is mentioned around Santa Teresa, it isn’t long before the word “spirit” pops into the conversation. Gayla has been a football cheerleader since she was a freshman, and was recently voted the best all-around student by the senior class. “I’m a naturally crazy person,” she says, ‘‘and cheerleading gives me a chance to express myself.” In her sophomore year, Gayla’s squad won a Spirit Stick at cheerleading camp, and they won both the Spirit Stick and the Superior Trophy her senior year. Gayla has been a member of the Black Student Union all four years at Santa Teresa, and belongs to MESA, a math, engineering and science organization for minority students. After high school she hopes to major in premedicine at college and go on to become a pediatrician. Gayla is very close to her family, who give her a lot of support, whatever she does. She is also in- debted to teachers like Mr. Cope and Mrs. Hoglund, who have taught her discipline and helped her prepare for college. “Cheerleading has given me a lot of experience in leadership and get- ting along with people. I’ve learned to blot out the stereotypes that some people have of cheerleaders, and concentrate on raising spirit.” Aaron Remolds “Generally, the people at Santa Teresa are more genuine than anywhere else I’ve ever been. They seem to be capable of opening themselves up and showing whc they really are inside.” So speakj Aaron Reinolds, a sensitive, ex pressive senior who expresses himself best through his music. Aaron has written fifteen songs all of which are copyrighted. H has been playing the guitar for ter years, and his extraordinary talents enabled him to win first place in th Santa Teresa Gong Show his sophomore year. He performed ir the folk concert his junior year, anc has sung in other talent shows sinc then. Aaron’s repetoire of songs in eludes “Trapped Like a Fly,’ “Elfsong,” and “Sister.” After higf school, he plans to attend San Jos State University and major ii music. In addition to his songwritint abilities, Aaron has recently show a talent for acting. He played Dr Herman Einstein in last fall’s pre duction of Arsenic and Old Lace and has been a member of the San ta Teresa Barber Shop Quartet. “I really owe a lot to teacher like Mr. Wells, Mr. Campbell, an Mr. Lemmon because they had a lc to teach me and were willing t take the time . .. you can tell the they have a great love for music.” 20 Seniors Ngoc-Trang Tran “I like helping people and communicating with them,” says Ngoc-Trang Tran, and she seems to have a special gift for doing just that. Trang is the president of the Vietnamese Club, as well as a member of the French and Spanish Clubs. She has helped many students from foreign countries get started at Santa Teresa by helping them learn English and assisting them with their studies. Not only is she a good student, but Trang works 30 hours every week after school. She is diligent and hard working, and when she finds free time she likes to paint and draw. She is also interested in sports, cooking and music, and plays the piano and the guitar. After high school, Trang hopes to go to UC Berkeley and major in language. She wants to get a degree in special education for the deaf and handicapped and someday use her abilities to help the underprivileged in foreign countries. “I want to put into life whatever I get out of it, and try to make the most of it.” John Blocher “Science and mathematics will get you where you’re going,” says John Blocher, “But they won’t fill your soul like music will.” John has certainly filled his soul at Santa Teresa. He came to us from Merced in the tenth grade, and has been in jazz band, concert band and marching band his sophomore, junior and senior years. He plays first chair clarinet in the marching band, and tenor saxophone in the jazz band. John is a member of the Santa Clara County Honor Band, as well as the California All-State Honor Band. He has made five record albums in band and has won two medals for outstanding musicianship in the All-State Honor Band. After he graduates from Santa Teresa, John wants to go to San Diego State and major in music; afterwards, he hopes to become a member of the San Francisco Symphony. “The key to music,” he notes, “is tipping the scales in your favor. Once you have done this, you will become an instrumental success.” Elizabeth Ezra Anyone who is familiar with Elizabeth Ezra knows that she has a passion for horrible puns and rarely fails to come up with an especially bad one at inopportune moments. Elizabeth is very involved in school activities and is a member of the Performing Arts Club, the French Club, C.S.F., and the National Honor Society. In addition to holding memberships in these clubs, she is the president of the Writers’ Club and the KSTS Broadcasting Club. In her junior year, Elizabeth was an editor and co-founder of the underground newspaper The Asylum. “I’m very proud of the creativity that went into publishing the Asylum, not to mention the typewriter ribbons and rubber cement. . .” She was also published three times in “Seventeen” magazine her junior year. Very active in drama, Elizabeth has had parts in Santa Teresa productions of Don’t Drink the Water, Play It Again Sam and Bye Bye Birdie, and last fall she played Abby Brewster in the drama departments Arsenic and Old Lace. After high school, she plans to attend University of California at Santa Cruz and become a writer. Elizabeth also happens to be the copy editor of the Compendium, and remarks that she was very uncooperative when she interviewed herself for Senior Spotlight. Seniors Candid Expressions Right: “Italian jokes bore me. Below: Leanne Edmonds — elite typist! Below right: Huey. Spirit Stick. Win- ning that stick really made our year! Promoting spirit and unity have been the goals of our squad this year. The task of boosting spirit in a school like Santa Teresa has become difficult at times because of the large number of activities planned, but we, the 81-82 Song-Girls, have done our best to raise school spirit. We hope, in years to come, Santa Teresa will be on top of the list for enthusiasm, spirit, and school unity! Football Song Girls 82 Spirit Kelly Pelayo Antje Welzien Sherri Chapman Patricia Nishimoto Lisa Wendt Sherry Hunter Cindy Sherwood Football Lcttcrgirls After two months of practicing our routine to “Paradise” five days a week, two hours a day, we were finally ready for camp at Santa Cruz this year. The night before camp, all seven of us slept over at Sherri’s house. We painted signs to show our school spirit, and at 11:00 pm we went to Alpha Beta and bought $35 worth of junk food. We hoped that it would last us the four days of camp. When we got to Santa Cruz, we learned many ex- citing routines, like “Superfreak,” “Give It to Me, Baby,” “Popeye,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” and “Rock It.” The second night, we did a skit with the basketball lettergirls in the Gong Show. On the third night, all fourteen of us slept in one room and pigged out on all the munchies! During each day at camp, we were evaluated on the cheers and routines we learned, and when it came time for the awards, we received a Superior Trophy! Football Lettergirls Spirit Footba Spirit Leaders 81-8 Varsity Football Cheerleaders This year’s theme was “Better than Ever,” and the Varsity Football Cheerleaders knew it was going to be just that when we brought home the Superior Trophy and the Spirit stick! Everyone was so excited we couldn’t wait until we got home to tell the other squads how we did. Last summer was special for the Football Cheerleaders because we shared all of the excitement and happiness with the Varsity Basketball Cheerleaders. It was so much fun doing “That’s the way to win,” with them at the Opening Day Rally. We felt like one united squad, and would like to say, “We love you, Varsity Basketball,” and will never forget “Oh what a Saint Badumbum, chaa, chaa!” There are so many happy memories that each squad shares with one another, like TP-ing football players’ houses, cheerleading camps, football games, and many more. It will be said when our season is over, but we will always be able to look back and say that 1981-82 was “Better than Ever!” Football Cheerleaders Gayla Ivery Becky Hopkins Lori Sande Lisa Meyer Laura Parelia 86 Spirit Leslie Harris Stacey Pate Kim Mar Samantha Carrillo Frosh-Soph Football Cheerleaders I don’t think any of us will forget this year. It was tough at first, learning to work with each others’ craziness, but we did it! Then we learned that a week’s practice didn’t count if we couldn’t show up for the game, so we worked harder. Practice was fun, although sometimes a pain, but to be good at anything, practice is mandatory. So we practiced and practiced and practic- ed because we were so determined to be “Better than Ever!” It paid off. Our first game was the greatest; we were out there cheering our team on to victory! Remember that bus ride home? Who could forget them, right? Remember the runaway run-throughs and rallies? Yeah, we lived through all the headaches and the good times. We’d like to say “Thank You” to all our friends who supported us at the games, and especially Joni for helping us. Last of all to that special guy on the team, Thank You! Frosh-Soph Football Cheerleaders Spirit 87 Iu ' Basketball Song Girls This year was the greatest! We will always cherish the fun times we had. The week before camp we were going crazy trying to make sure we would be prepared. We will never forget the 7:00 a.m. practices, just so we could all be there to perfect our routine. If we all couldn’t get together, we would have two practices a day, which happened every day that week. Finally, the big day came, the day we went to USA SPIRIT CAMP in Santa Barbara, with the Fall Song Girls. For those four days we were the rowdiest squad of twelve, which helped us to win the spirit stick on the third day. We really appreciated the support of the Fall Song-girls cheering us on. At the end of those four days, we knew we would never forget the tears and joys we all shared. We couldn’t say we came home empty-handed. We won a trophy the last day, all twelve of us. This was only the beginning; next was the real text. We knew we would have to be our best because we represented our school, Santa Teresa. Supporting our basketball team and hav- ing fun at the same time was a real pleasure! We started at the bus depot, just four cheerleaders ready to go to Santa Barbara for the most radical week of our lives. We were the smallest group, but in our hearts we were the big- gest. We started our first evaluation with an outstanding ribbon and yet, dreamed for the spirit stick. The next two days we moved up to an ex- cellent, and we knew we were one step away from the superior, the ticket to our spirit stick. Finally, we did it, on our last day, we got our superior rib- bon and the spirit stick. It was a feeling all of us will cherish. Suzanne limped up to accept our stick as tears ran down our faces. We will always remember the friends we made and expecially, Mike! Remember the “Popeye” routine, and when we went for our meals. We were so hungry, and our trays were filled with desserts. From the day we were elected, last spring, it has been a year of excitement, sadness, frustration and just plain happiness. All summer we worked hard on a routine called “Falling In Love.” which we practiced and perfected for camp competition. Getting up early every morning for 8:00 am practices, we awaited the day of Aug. 1, 1981 to leave for U.S.A. camp. When that time finally came, all seven of us, in matching outfits and punk rock glasses, decorated a van with our lettergirl spirit and departed for the University of Calif., Santa Cruz. At last, we were on our way! We all know that nothing could ever replace the times we had and things we shared. Yelling and screaming, making some of us lose our voices, we came home with a spirit certificate. We shall never forget the fun we had doing “Superfreak” routine, the “Bad Girls” skit, and all piling up with the football lettergirls in one room, the last night of camp. We all got to be so close because of the things we shared. We didn’t want to leave it all, but now it’s passed and still a wonderful memory which is “Better Than Ever!” U.S.A. camp was an experience which we will always cherish. Basketball Lettergirls 94 Spirit Varsity Basketball Cheerleaders Last year when we found out that five of us would become the squad of the Basketball Cheerleaders, we were happy that it was to be us. During the summer we went to camp U.S.A. at Santa Cruz with the Football Cheerleaders. We worked hard, but it was worth it. We had a lot of determination and succeeded in bringing home four Superior ribbons. In keeping with the tradi- tional S.T. spirit, we also brought home the Spirit Stick. We started the season cheering for cross-country and found ourselves on the sidelines of the basketball court. We had a great year and lots of fun. Howard as our coach of the year for 1981-82. Although several coaches and teams had outstanding seasons, Coach Howard’s varsity basketball team provided S.T. fans with entertainment, excitement, and surprising success. Given a group of players averaging just over six feet tall and lacking a superstar to depend on in crucial situations, Mr. Howard utilized to their fullest the special skills of each individual and guided the team into the C.C.S. play-offs in defiance of the laws of probability. And it was crowd-pleasing basketball all the way. Some of it was attributable to luck, and a great portion to his knowledge and experience as a coach and a former collegiate player. But the special ingredient, according to every last member of the team, is the man’s dedication, temperament and positive regard for the dignity of his players, which they absorbed, instilled in each other, and exuded on the court in competition. Mathematically, it resulted in a winning season, but the numbers do not tell the story of the respect and admiration that he personally won from his team. If you want that, you have to play basketball for C. J. Howard. After being edged out of the league championship by half a game, Santa Teresa entered the tournament as the MHAL’s second place team. The Saints brought with them a 7-1-1 league record and an 10-2-2 overall mark. The most memorable game of the season occurred in the tournament in a 2-1 win over highly ranked Santa Clara. Veteran goalie Jeff Wudarki went down injured. Freshman Mark Dougherty proceeded to put on an incredible exhibition of goal keeping and kept the Saints in the match. The score at the end of two overtimes was 1-1. The single Saint goal was scored by Jim McConnell. The game was eventually decided on penalty kicks. Standouts for the Saints this year were Randy Prescott, the league’s most valuable player, Duane Dirstine and Jeff Wudarki who received first team all league honor; and Matt Willman, Scott Kouns and Andy Zavodnick who received second team all league honor. The season started with a dual meet tournament in which they won 6 and lost 2, placing 3rd overall. Going directly into the M.H.A.L. season, the Saints were without 4 starters. They lost the first 3 duals. However, the test of a good team is the ability to come back. The Saints finished the remainder of the season undefeated (6-3), placing 3rd in the M.H.A.L. At the M.H.A.L. finals, the Saints qualified 6 to the CCS. They were Arnold Khanbabian, 5th, Jason Ng, 5th, Eric DeLa Rosa, 2nd, Rich Fambrini, 3rd, Todd Harman, 6th, Ron Garcia, 2nd, and Ivan Clarke, Champion. We had a record setting forty people try out. There are only fifteen official positions, but we are carrying twenty-four on our roster. This will give us an opportunity to build for next year as well as provide a challenging situation within the team. Our four seniors are in their third year of varsity badminton. Number one singles is Debbie Dorsch, who placed fourth in the league last year. Numbers two and three, respectively, are Mary Raymer and Cheryl Rohde. Diane Ichinaga will fill in at the number one doubles spot. Also included in our returning players are juniors Lori Bennett, Tracie Christmas, Chris Stasi, and Yogi Uda; returning sophomores Lana Paler, Shireen Tavassoli, and Gidget Uda. Although the rest of the team are new to competitive badminton, the skills, enthusiasm and postivie attitudes that have been displayed thus far point to a great season. Badminton Varsity Baseball The 1982 edition of the varsity baseball team will base its hope of capturing the M.H.A.L. crown on youth. After graduating an all-senior starting team last year, the Saints will rely on catcher Doug Garabito, shortstop Steve Koch, and outfielder Andy Zavodnick. Newcomers to the varsity this year are sophomores Beau Hastings (pitcher), Mark Benevento (first base), Steve Darnell (second base), and Dave McCorkell (pitcher outfielder). The Saints will be an exciting team to watch because of good team speed and solid defense. As always they will be a force to reckon with in the South Division. Power hitting by Sandy Cox, Gretta Joseph, Stephanie Clement, and Lisa Ellingson should provide the needed offense. Strong defense by Lori Kempf, Inga Vorwerk, Diana Irvin, and Kim Duggan should keep the opposition off the bases. Frosh-Soph Softball Boys’ Varsity Track This year’s track team will be led by many outstanding seniors. Heading the list is double school record holder Robert Anderson, who last year set marks of 4:230.6 in the mile and 9:23.1 in the two-mile. In an indoor meet in San Francisco this February, Robert ran 4:04.6 in the 1500 meters, a meet record. Mike Burns, school record holder in the long jump at 2T2 will also be a threat in the Shot put and discus, as will Jeff Reed another outstanding thrower. Boys’ Frosh-Soph Track This year’s Frosh-Soph team should be enriched with an abundance of talent. Whether or not the team fares well is still a question that will be answered before the season ends. However, there will be many potential stars that should highlight the season. The team will be highlighted by the presence of Travis Knox. Only a Freshman, he is already one of the best hurdlers in the school. He’s already set a Frosh-Soph record in the low hurdles. His performance should also be very helpful to the varsity squad. Joe Brink will also help the Frosh- Soph team with his sprinting abilities in the 100-200 and 400. All in all, it will be an Interesting year. Boys’ Frosh-Soph Track 163 This year’s team is expected to be extremely strong as there is a very good group of freshmen and many returning lettermen. The sprints will be very strong with Karen and Kristen Dowell, both under 60 seconds in the 440. Also sprinting for the Saints will be Arleda Burch, Laura Henry, and Debbie Spina. The distances will be handled by Sheri Opp, Gina DeLa Rosa, Rhonda Fuller, Carmen Dojahn, Alisa Owens, Michelle Spooner, and Chris Calvello. Velana Ferro is the returning league champion in the 330 hurdles. Also running hurdles will be Cathy Nydam and Laura Henry. The shot and discus throws will be taken care of by Danielle Belanger, Cathy Nydam, and Amy Barron. Santa Teresa triumphantly placed third out of twenty-five schools at the grueling all-day event, and placed higher than any other school in the district. The ten different competitive categories were English literature, fine arts, physical and biological sciences, social science, mathematics, career education and awareness, essay, speech, interview, and an exciting superquiz on the subject of energy. Members of the successful team were John Barchie, George Chastain, Ivan Clarke, Chris Hannah, Jeff Koppelmaa, Mike Marshall, and Mike Tomasco. Unlike last year’s state champions Palo Alto High School, who were given a year to prepare for this competition, Santa Tersa’s decathalon team had only three weeks to prepare themselves, in addition to keeping up with unusually demanding class loads. Nevertheless, these Saints put forth an outstanding performance of academic excellence. Despite the addition of four new members and the meeting of class at the crack of dawn, the band is doing well. The group made its debut at the San Jose City Jazz Festival and received many favorable comments from the adjudicator. The next gig was at the local community center for a senior citizens’ luncheon. The old folks were really brought to life by the band’s rendition of In the Mood and Two O'Clock Jump, tunes from the early 40’s. The band is now in the process of preparing for the Reno Jazz Festival, which they will attend in March, followed by many other con- certs in the spring. The volunteer seniors are tutoring students in reading, writing and math. They are also serving as resource people by providing suggestions for adding real-life writing skills to the curriculum. In exchange for thier services, the seniors are entitled to use their choice of Santa Teresa’s facilities and or receive other help as needed. As a result of the program, the students and staff of S.T. have become involved with the seniors at the Southside Community Center. For example, students from the jazz band and drama class performed at the center. In addition, many S.T. students helped the senior citizens have a nicer Christmas by contributing food during the school’s annual food drive. Mr. Gigliotti, a S.T. safety education teacher, holds weekly exercise classes for the senior citizens.
