Jose Juaquin Bernal spent most of his life in the mili- tary and for his service was awarded the Rancho Santa Teresa. Records show that he occupied the land as early as 1826. By the time he petitioned the governor for a league of land in 1834, he and his sons had al- ready built adobes for their families on the land. Governor Figueroa not only awarded him one league, but over two leagues. At the time of his death in 1837, he not only owned the Rancho Santa Teresa, but possessed over 5 thousand head of cattle, one hundred fifty horses, mares and colts. 6

As a soldier, Juan Francisco, with his family, endured the trails and hardships of the Anza Expedition of 1775-76. The family was at the founding of the Presidio ami Mission in what Is now San Francisco, and records show that he was still In the military in 1795 when 58 years old. In an Inventory taken In that year the Bernal family was among the wealthier fami- lies, with Juan Francisco owning 25 head of stock ami 246 sheep; while his sons, JOSE JUAQUIN and Juan Francisco owned 8 and 16 respectively. Records Indicate that Juan Francisco died on October 28, 1802, at the Presidio in San Francisco and was burled from the Mission San Francisco de Assisi. JOSE JUAQUIN Joined the military at the Presidio In San Francisco on July 1, 1784, and served out his career in the San Francisco District of Alta California. On January 4, 1785, he married Maria Josefa Sanchez, a daughter of Jose Antonio Sanchez and Marla Dolores Morales at the Mission San Francisco dc Assisi.
