Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1975 volume:

PEUfDIUM 1975 2 RANCHO SANTA TERESA JOSE JOAQUIN BERNAL, later grantee of the Santa Teresa Rancho in Santa Clara County, was born in 1762 on the Rancho La Hacienda, Sinaloa, Nueva Espana. He was the son of Juan Francisco Bernal, born in 1737 at the Rancho del Tule, Sinaloa, and his wife Maria Josefa de Soto. In 1774 Juan Bautista de Anza was in Sinaloa signing re- cruits for his expedition to Alta California and Juan Francisco Bernal signed up as a member of this expedi- tion. At this time there were six children in the family with a seventh to be born a year later. They were: JOSE JUAQUIN (1762), Juan Francisco (1763), Jose DIonisio (1765), Jose Apolonario (1766), Ana Maria (1770), and Maria Teresa de Jesus (1772), and last, Tomas (1775). 3 4 As a soldier, Juan Francisco, with his family, endured the trails and hardships of the Anza Expedition of 1775-76. The family was at the founding of the Presidio ami Mission in what Is now San Francisco, and records show that he was still In the military in 1795 when 58 years old. In an Inventory taken In that year the Bernal family was among the wealthier fami- lies, with Juan Francisco owning 25 head of stock ami 246 sheep; while his sons, JOSE JUAQUIN and Juan Francisco owned 8 and 16 respectively. Records Indicate that Juan Francisco died on October 28, 1802, at the Presidio in San Francisco and was burled from the Mission San Francisco de Assisi. JOSE JUAQUIN Joined the military at the Presidio In San Francisco on July 1, 1784, and served out his career in the San Francisco District of Alta California. On January 4, 1785, he married Maria Josefa Sanchez, a daughter of Jose Antonio Sanchez and Marla Dolores Morales at the Mission San Francisco dc Assisi. The following Genealogical Data Is a record of this marriage as it has been researched to date: JOSE JOAQUIN BERNAI. Born: 1762 0 the Rancho La Hacienda, Sinaloa, Nucve Espana Married: 4 January, 1785 0 Mission San Francisco dc Assisi to: MARIA JOSEFA SANCHEZ Died: 12 June, 1837 0 the RANCHO SANTA TERESA 5 Jose Juaquin Bernal spent most of his life in the mili- tary and for his service was awarded the Rancho Santa Teresa. Records show that he occupied the land as early as 1826. By the time he petitioned the governor for a league of land in 1834, he and his sons had al- ready built adobes for their families on the land. Governor Figueroa not only awarded him one league, but over two leagues. At the time of his death in 1837, he not only owned the Rancho Santa Teresa, but possessed over 5 thousand head of cattle, one hundred fifty horses, mares and colts. 6 Agustin, Bruno, and Juan Bernal took over the management of the Rancho for their mother, Maria Josefa. This was natural in as much as each son had his own adobe, family, and cattle carrying their own brands as they roamed the land. At branding time the cattle were divided up equally with each receiving the brand of their owner. The FONDO, or ranch brand, of course, belonged to Maria Josefa Bernal. Profits were not always what they should have been, as the records show in 1839, six hund- red head of cattle were slaughtered to pay the debts of the Rancho. Again, in 1840, 1841, 1842, and 1843 there were slaughtered for the same purpose one hundred head of cattle per annum, one-half of which were of the FONDO and the remaining belonging to the sons. Over fifty head of cattle were slaughtered each year for the use of the Rancho families, one-half of which went for the widow, Maria Joscfa's household. With so many families on one Rancho, and with the herds growing larger each year it became necessary to seek other grazing land to sus- tain the cattle. It was in 1843-44 that Juan and Agustin Bernal, with their families, left the Rancho Santa Teresa driving three-thou- sand head of cattle northward onto the Rancho del Valle de San Jose. This Rancho was own- ed by their brother-in-law Antonio Sunol, hus- band of their sister Maria Francisca Dolores. A few years later Bruno Bernal followed with his family and cattle. 8 9 10 After her sons left, Maria Josefa and her grandson, Nicolas Valencia, took over the active operation of the Rancho. By 1847, Nicolas, who was the son of Julio Valencia and the deceased Marcelina Bernal, was in charge of the cattle on the Rancho and handled the rodeo, branding, and selling of the cattle for market under the advice and direction of his grandmother. By 1853, he had accumulated eight hundred head of cattle of his own through payment for his work and gifts from his grand- mother. 11 12 In 1857, Maria Joscfa Bernal, widow of Jose Juaquin Bernal, died leaving the Rancho to her heirs, which, in addition to her sons and daughters living, num- bered from seventy to eighty grandchild- ren. The information and history has generously been provided by Mr. Bartolomo Sepulveda of San Jose. We call Mr. Chapman our fearless leader because a man who can take twelve girls with no experience in yearbooks, one boy with a little background, and put out a yearbook like ours must be fearless. After our names are quotes which, to the ma- jority of us, fit our personality and attitude in class. We sincerely hope each one of you will find a special memory in your yearbook and enjoy that memory any time you pick up your book. From your friends of the yearbook, we hope you too had a fantastic year. Next year promises to be even bet- ter. 17 So many gentle friends are near Whom one can scarcely see You should never feel alone Wherever you may be We would like to thank the manage- ment of Frontier Village for the use of their grounds in taking these fan- tastic pictures. Mr. Chapman really enjoyed him- self while these pictures were being shot. Notice the big smiles on his face at the thought of all the girls around him. When we trapped him in the stocks though, he didn't seem quite as happy. On the day these shots were taken it was slightly wot outside, in the form of rain, so the less adventurous of the staff stayed home. 18 61 r 20 1 If my wife sees me. I'm in real trouble! OFFICERS Who are we? Are we? What will we become? Have we been ? These questions never have and probably never will be answered by a textbook. These questions may only be answered from within oneself. This is what I believe school is all about. The primary learning takes place not in the classroom, not from a textbook, and not from tests, but rather between classes where human contact is not so restrained. Contact with other people with different views and opinions is perhaps the gi'eatest learning experience that school can provide. I am glad to have known most of you through my years here and before. I am leaving school at the end of this year, and to all my friends and to all those I did not have the opportunity to meet, I say a final hello till again we do meet (sic). Richard Taylor kind of.... V The music department offers the opportunities to explore many aspects of performance as well as theory and composition. We offer instrumental as well as vocal music classes to accomodate all levels of ability. The band has ninety brand new uniforms and is working toward some competition parades, as well football shows in the fall. It also will be playing concerts throughout the school year on campus and around the area. The choir performs at various functions throughout the school year with an emphasis on the Christmas season and explores the classic spring concerts. Our orchestra is made up of string instruments only and explores the classic literature for string ensemble. The wind instruments are added occasionally to afford the students the opportunities to play major symphonic works. In the future we hope to present a major musical comedy each year and provide a general and well balanced musical atmosphere for all the student at Santa Teresa. 90 One of our campus philosphers says, If you want to describe Home Ec. in 200 words, just write, Yum, Yum 200 times. Consumer and Homemaking Educa- tion deals with survival for daily living. Home Ec. not only covers the traditional cooking and sewing routine, but delves into human relations, consumer action, gourmet and microwave cooking, tailoring, teaching of young children (have you seen our children's center?), decorative arts (rugmaking, needlework, macrame, weaving), and managing your hard-earned money wisely. Join us in Consumer and Homemaking Education. The art department offers a wide variety of activities for creative adventure. The students in Jewelry Ceramics create rings and pottery that are not only beautiful to look at but also functional. Painting stu- dents explore the marvels of color and expression. Photography stu- dents learn to see the world around them and the beauties of every day life. The Saints were to play one of the most difficult schedules in the Santa Clara Valley. The Saints, having no senior class, set out on a most difficult task. The lack of experience along with early season injuries to key players, resulted in a 0-9 season. With the return of every Varsity player, the 1975 team should have a highly successful year. 138 139 The J.V. football team went through a most difficult time in '74, but never gave up or lacked team spirit. The team was small because so many players had to be used on Varsity. They always gave a good account of themselves. With a 0-9 season, the team could have easily given up, but they constantly played representative ball. 140 JUNIOR VARSITY Left to right: Back row: Coach O’Brian, Rogers, Flores, Marine, Padilla, Cheatham, Silva, Cannon, Chukcs, Tzanavaras, English, Ball, Craig, Haagland, Bouslog, PIzl (Mgr.), Coach Chaboya. The 1975 Freshman football team accomplished many outstanding feats this season: A league championship, an undefeated season (8-0), and the first championship in Santa Teresa's history. There were many outstanding individuals, but it was the united ability and skills of forty players who all con- tributed to this highly successful season. The offense netted over 1500 yards on the ground and 750 yards in the air for thirty-four touchdowns and 230 points—one of the highest totals in league history. The defense held opponents to an average of only eight points per game, while forcing many turnovers and giv- ing the offense various scoring opportunities. H,0 POLO The inaugural water polo season at Santa Teresa was a pure learning ex- perience for all of the individuals in- volved. First, the players had to get used to new coach with a different coaching philosophy; second, they had to get used to a new' system of play; and finally they had to get used to playing at the Varsity level. Although the season was not a com- plete success, it was not a total fail- ure cither. The Varsity finished the division season in a 3-way tie for sec- ond place with two wins and three losses. Mike Phillips and Gary Mort were named the All League Second Team, while Scott Coffee garnered a spot on the Honorable Mention Team. A very bright spot for the season was the play of the Frosh-Soph team. They won the division with a perfect record and lost the League Champion- ship in seven over-time periods. In a post season play they went on to place fourth in the Northern California Frosh-Soph Tournament. Outstanding Frosh-Soph performers were Mark Caulkins, Brian Ladd, Don Ruebenson, and Paul Bittcncourt. The team was led by Junior, Pat Glover, who was voted the Most Outstanding Varsity Runner by his team. Steve Nelson also a returner for next season was selected at the team captain. FROSH CROSS COUNTRY: Jim Callender, Ralph Frcscas, Tao Barnes. Jim Hcncr8on, Mike Glover, LeRoy Cano, Ken Davison, Jim McDonough The Saint Frosh Cross-Country Team was led by two outstanding runners: Tao Barnes, voted our most valuable frosh runner, and Keith Scott, voted our team captain. These two fine runners certainly have a fine future ahead of them in their running three years at Santa Teresa. 145 The young Saints posted a record of 7 wins and 17 losses in their first season. Among the more notable accomplishments of the season despite inexperience were: an upset 57-56 victory over Piedmont Hills in the first league game ever; back to back victories over Yerba Buena and Andrew Hill at the end of the campaign; and many other gutty performances along the way. Sophomore Rich Campbell led the cagers in scoring with a 10.3 average and in rebounding averaging 9.3 a game. During the last four contests Rich hauled down an amazing 70 rebounds. Kip Nelson, the team's captain, was second in both departments scoring at a 10.0 clip per contest while grabbing 8 rebounds a game. Kip scored a season high of 29 pts. against Hill. Frosh Tony Chukes was also a stand-out leading the team in assists and did a fine job of bringing the ball up court against constant pressure. Tony was also the teams 3rd leading scorer averaging 8.1 per game. Mike Perry came on at the end of the season to spark the Saint's to 3 victories in 8 games. Rex Tate was the speedster of the team and was the leading scorer the last 2 games. Joe Moline was a starting guard almost all season. Next year should be successful and exciting for coach Glen Miller's young Saints. Their record was ten wins eleven losses. A high- point of the season came with a 46-44 last second win over arch rival Oak Grove. The J.V. Saints will be future Varsity champions. They had a winning season as exemplified by their 7 win, 6 loss record. They faced many hardships during the long season such as not having a place to practice and playing all games on foreign courts. The players have a right to be proud of their season. FROSH BASKETBALL 148 Santa Teresa wrestlers completed their first season with a 5-8-1 record. Highlight of the season was a 5th place finish in the SAN LORENZO DUAL MEET TOURNAMENT. Mike Profit (191 lbs.) and Norris Williams (hwt) each won tournament championships to provide the Saints with two of the top heavyweight wrestlers in the Central Coast Section. Other Saint Grapplers with winning records were Curtis Rodriquez, Bob Martinez, and Frosh Phil Danko. If enthusiasm means anything, the Saints are bound to be a top MHAL contender soon. Over 75 wrestlers turn- ed out this year and 40 completed the season. Six of our Varsity wrestlers had never competed in High School wrestling prior to the 74-75 season and only one had competed on the Varsity level. With a years experience, Santa Teresa wrestlers are now looking forward to next season. David Bradley, Darren Trone, Dennis Hagland and Greg Francisco all placed fourth at the MHAL finals. The team had a winning season with a 5-4-1 record. No team scored more than 1 point against the Saints with Darrly Gera and Mike Small in the goal. Other defensive standouts were David Jones, Jeff Richards and Jim Craig. The top mid-field man was Alan Jones. The offense was led by Jim Williams, Chris Cabacungan, Jim Muller and Mike Cote. The team voted Dave Jones the MVP and Chris Cabacungan the Ml. The high point of the season was beating Oak Grove 1-0 in a well played game. The future looks great for the baby Saints as 7 of the 11 starters were freshman. Look for a League champ- ionship next year! FROSH SOI’II SOCCER VARSITY SOCCER In simply looking over our record (2-8-2) one might conclude that the team had a disheartening season. This, however, was not the case. In our 1st contest, the Saints came away with a 3-0 win over Westmont. Val Horvatich, Mike Fox and John Souza played strong on defense. The real highlights came during the final week of the season against Milpitas. Bob Strohmeir finally scored ST's first league goal with ahead shot to the corner of the net. Another goal by Keith Thomas gave the team a 2-0 victor}'. In the final game of the season against arch-rival Oak Grove, we really played well. We have many outstanding prospects who have not been tested by high school com- petition. Tony Chukes, Kevin Mulheam, and Ken Jobe should provide one of the top mound staffs in the league. The keystone combo of Brian Anderson and Paul Yohanon will be very solid defensively. We will also depend on these two players to supply a great deal of our offensive punch. Outfield strength will be furnished by Steve Truman, Glen Andrews and Steve Taylor. Front row: Ken Jobe, Kurt Temple, Bob Cruz, Paul Yohanon, Steve Truman, Steve Agens. Excitement, hustle, enthu- siasm, and the willingness to learn, will be the trade mark of the Young Saints in 1975. BASKETBALL We have had a very trying season. The team members had a great deal of learning growing to do as athletes. The varsity gave their best in competing with the ten veteran teams. The Junior Varsity displayed a tremendous amount of im- provement within one season. However, the best part of the experience was not necessarily on the basketball court. Even though we may have lost the game the returning bus was filled with ST spirit. That was, in itself, a victory in individual and athletic fulfillment.
