J' -,. .2- '--nz!-f' ' 'Y ' -- ' ' H' ' PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE I enthusiastically welcome this opportunity-my first one-to record in the Patrin my admiration and affection for the staff and students of Santa Rosa junior College. My first year as president has been a profoundly rewarding one, for the support you have given me has been unrestricted and immediate. When Floyd P. Bailey, the ablest administrator of them all, retired at the con- clusion of last year, he left a legacy of good will and loyalty to the college to fur- nish a strong basis for its continued progress. My goal has been to merit the contin- uance and strengthening of that legacy, and you have helped me push toward that goal. I am deeply grateful to all of you. ' This has been a good year in spite of the political and economic tensions that have arisen in our country and world which inevitably have an impact on our college community. The threats which we face not only imply but demand that all of us work harder to make the greatest use of the developmental opportunities the college offers each of us. The challenge is thrust upon us by as serious a set of circumstances as we have ever faced to help you identify your aptitudes, develop your skills, extend and en- rich your knowledge. We as a faculty on the one hand must provide you with the best instruction and the wisest counsel at our command and you as students have the obli- gation to respond with the full energy, determination, and intelligence at your command. A family, a community, a nation is no better than the sum total of its component parts. Each of us has the responsibility to make the best contribution he can make -not just one equal to his neighbors- but the best he can make whether that is less or more than his neighbor's. The greatest sense of satisfaction any one of us can have - and each of you has surely proved this - comes from the knowledge that he has brought to the task at hand his maximum effort and ability. To those of you who leave us at the end of this college year I extend my warm wishes for your success and contentment. I hope you depart a wiser and better person than you were at your initial enrollment and that we have made a substantial contribu- tion to that end. I trust we merit your respect and good will as you have merited ours. We look forward to your return visits. To those of you who yet have studies to complete at the college-a warm welcome upon your return and a proffered challenge to make next year your best one!
