The students joined in the writing of the script, which required the participation of the choral, dancing and orchestra students. Performing in this program were more than one hundred and seventy students. 'Twas just before Christmas that this program occurred, December 11 and 12. Capacity crowds were enthralled by enchanting scenes and intricate dance routines. Don Clark was the clever master of ceremonies who wittily announced the solos, dances, or' chestral numbers, commercials, and everything that made up the radio show. The climax of the program came when boxes symbolizing the practical gifts of food and cloth- ing which Santa Rosa High School students had sent overseas to France and Holland were heaped on the stage in an imposing pyramid. Thus Radio X-M-A-S signed off with an actual demonstration of the Christmas spirit of giving. Proceeds from these performances yielded a check for one hundred dollars for the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Fund. lilly-nm: .v1,x. 5 Encore! The Drama Club of IQJS, boasting one hundred members, ushered in the fall semester with the program People XY!e've Met. The proceeds from this show, totalling five hundred, fifty dol- lars went for the benefit of the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Fund. To key up with firsthand information as to what was going on in the theatrical world,,members attended the San Rafael High School play, The Voice of the Turtle. Song of Norway, Dear Ruth, Life Witli Father. and the U. C. Variety Show Hit. Perhaps the most exciting of these ventures was the excursion to San Francisco when sixty members chartered a bus. There followed a full day of fun, including attendance at a stage play, Angel Street . starring Laraine Day and Gregory Peck. As the final curtain fell, Gregory Peck graciously came forward to give Drama Club members a personal interview. All Drama Club activities are directed by dynamic and talented Mr. Glen Guymon, drama teacher. 1. VARIETY SHOXV-Memorial Hospital Benefit Perfofniance. Z. YES MEANS NO 5- STAR DUST, 5 CHRISTMAS PARTY for all Drama Club members When Christmas came along, the Drama Club decided to give a party in the drama room for club members only. The outstandingly beautiful decorations exhilarated all with the spirit of Christ- mas. The members were entertained by advanced studentsg games and dancing followed with refresh- ments, climaxing an un-usual and unique event. N The many club meetings throughout the year featured entertainment as well as the preparation and judging of contest work. One highlight was the visit of Burt Lancaster, who discused with mem- bers, The Theory of Acting. During the year Drama Club was called upon by community organizations for more than six- ty programs. Twenty-six Club members were awarded Degrees of Merit by the National Forensic League for their active service in the community. The public service feature of the Club is one of its most gratifying accomplishments. Stardust was Drama Club's contribution to the student body's social pleasure. The dance of the year featured programs, honor guests, good refreshments, gardenia corsages, and Black Knights orchestra. A midnight ceiling was a perfect backdrop for a star spanglecl sky. Two moons enhanced the dreamy atmosphere. Stardust will remain a happy, satisfying memory, not only to Drama Club members, but to all who attended. , Y if -mf new T s 1 Z 1 .s N.. tc. First, they captured new honors when they were invited, january 10, to participate in the Lincoln High School contest, an annual event for the Bay Area schools. Ed Hunter, graduating senior, placed himself in the top ranks of California student speakers on March 14, by winning the American Legion's first speech contest at Sacramento. Placing first in original oration and extemporaneous speaking qualified him for the state championship contest. Our drama students walked off with the sweepstakes for the tenth consecutive year. In original oratory Richard Moodey placed second, Barbara Capanacci fourth, and Gene Canevari eighth. Dan Striepeke took first in original declamation with janet Black second, Kay Yopp fifth, and Eleanore Sweazey sixth. Band A roll of the drums, the blare of the trumpets, and the glitter of twirling batons again announces the coming of the Santa Rosa High School band, Under the direction of Mr. Josef Walter, the band has made many appearances at public functions. On New Year's Day our band joined many other fine school bands in the pageant at the Shrine liilst-West Football Game. held in Kezar Stadium, San Francisco. This honor came at the personal invitation of the Shrine Pageant Committee. Half-time at all football games has given the band a fine opportunity to dazzle the spectators with novel and tricky maneuvers. Our band has put on a colorful show at the Armistice Day Parade and the Army Day celebra- tion. Among the year's standout performances was the band's appearance on May 5 at the annual combined Sonoma County Band and Orchestra Festival. Another program was presented on May 22 by the band with the orchestra. Education Week saw the band parading again in Santa Rosa and presenting a concert for the public. The band can always be counted upon for good music and brilliant displays. THE BAND MANEUVERING AT THE ANALY GAME FALL OFFICERS FRONT: P. Dillon, Mgr.: L. Bartolomei, Sec.-Treas. Yes, the team they forgot about before the season began, the team that came from nowhere, to win undefeated the N.B.L. basketball champion- ship! SAN RAFAEL .... The 1947-48 N. B. L. basketball season was off to a great start when the underrated Panthers met the San Rafael Bulldogs on our own court to win 20-30. ANALY .... Encountering little difficulty, the Panther hoopmen romped over the Analy Tigers to win their second straight by a score of 47-17. TAMALPAIS .... The Tamalpais Indians were third to feel the strength of the Panther clawsfa close game that had spectators in a dither through the final seconds of play and proved our Panthers mightier by a 28-30 score. VALLEJO .... Displaying smoothness, precision, and great determination, the Panthers took an early lead and triumphed 53-32 over the Apaches on our own hardwood. This win eliminated Vallejo and put Santa Rosa in the running with Napa for the coveted crown. NAPA .... After trailing for three full quarters and part of the final period, the Panthers staged a courageous comeback in the final four minutes to win 39-36 over the Indians. With this victory to their credit. only Petaluma stood between the Panthers and the undisputed crown. PETALUMA .... Playing as traditional rivals with both showing spirit and determination, Petaluma, although the underdog, threatened our mighty Panthers until late in the game, when the Panthers came through, as they had done all season long just when it counted most. Final score -51-33. This final triumph marked the capture of the North Bay League undefeated basketball cham- pionship for the first time since the 1945-46 season. The Panthers captured many of the practice tilts, but gave up all league games played up to the writing of this article. Inexperience was the chief cause for the Panthers' losses. This year's team had to start from scratch because there were few returning veterans from last year's squad. I Among the problems besetting the squad was the weather. Practice sessions were hindered by the rains. Coach Underhill's nine was weak in the hurling position because this chore was carried by two new pitchers, George Storti and Ronald Goode. Throughout the season Coach Underhill was some- what undecided as to the position assignment of his players. Usually a different line-up played each game. Temporary steadies in the infield were Bill Noonan, first baseg Nate Del Querra along with Meade Nordyke controlled the keystone bagg and Francis De Marco held down third base until he was forced to quit because of back injuries. Frank Bertoli continued to play a fine brand of ball at his shortstop position. Covering the outfield were George Treder in left field, Phil Nicholas in center, and Ernie Bassignani in right field. But in spite of difficulties, the squad gave the spectators many thrills and gained playing skill. Many first-string players and reserves will return next year and should comprise a championship nine. one bn 1111 G. Storti P. Nicholas B. Slivkoff R. Goode Pitcher L.
