Through their presentation of news on national and international affairs they have made our people one of the best-informed in the world. Magazines also are becoming more and more popular in our school systems as an important tool in the educational process. In addition to their informational and educational functions they provide worthwhile entertain- ment to millions of people. We of the Echo staff of 1947 wish to pay tribute to the Ameri- can Magazine lndustry by selecting and por- traying some of the magazines that are repre- sentative of the ways of our school life. We hope that through this theme We may create for you a clear and interesting picture of the life and activities of our past school year. Wood President City Superintendent Board of Education of Schools Board of Education The Santa Rosa Board of Education meets once a month, and more often when neces- sary, to administer to the needs of the various schools in this district. President of the Board of Education is Mr. George A. Proctor, who has been on the board for the past ninteen years: he has been president for two years. Mrs. Helen M. Lehman is secretary: she has been a member for nine years. Mr. Archie Lockhart is the veteran of the administrative group hav- ing served faithfully for twenty-live years. Newest members of the board are Mr, Harold Bostock, serving in his third year, and Mr, Leonard A. Talbot, who has served for a year. Mr. Lloyd K. Wood, City Superintendent of Schools, works with the Board of Education in handling the educational problems of Santa Rosa. Mr. Wood has occupied the superin- tendents ofhce since 1941. Before that he served as principal of the high school for four vears. For some time past the Board of Education and Superintendent Wood have been very busy planning an expansion of the city school system to meet the needs of our increased population. This expansion was assured in the spring with the voting of school bonds which will soon convert our present four year high school to a senior high school of three years and add a three year junior high school and two new grammar schools to the present system. Mrs. Helen M. Lehman Mr. Archie Lockhart Mr. Harold D. Bostock Mr. Leonard A. Talbot Secretar ' Director Director Director 5 Mr. T. H. Battelle Mr. Frederick F. Duey Principal Vice-Principal-in-Charge Fall Semester Spring Semester Administrators The administration of Santa Rosa High School has undergone several changes in the past year. The most important of these was the resignation of Mr. T. H. Battelle in December to take a position with the State Board of Education. Mr. Battelle came to Santa Rosa in 1932 as head of the Commercial Department, which post he held until assuming the principalship nine years later. Since 1941 Mr. Battelle guided the activities of the high school wisely and well. Students and faculty alike are sorry that he is gone, but they wish him all success in his new position. After Mr. Battelle's resignation Mr. Frederick F. Duey, vice-principal, took over leader- ship of the school as Vice-Principal-in-Charge. Santa Rosa High was fortunate in having a man of Mr. Duey's caliber on hand to assume this important post. Mr. Wilfred W. Rankin mfgved from his post as Chairman of the Social Science Department to assist Mr. Duey in the o ce. f 3 pewcomer on the staff last fall was Mrs. Grace Rothert who took the position of Dean 0 If S. They recalled that first day of school with a smile, seeing themselves as confused, embarrassed, and lowly Freshmen. Then the wonderful Freshman Ilgeciption took place which made them full-fledged members of Santa Rosa ig . Then came the completion of their Freshman year, and with a sigh of relief they were high and mighty Sophomores, They remembered that happy year and the excitement of the Sophomore picnic. They also recalled their pride in knowing and being known by some of the Iuniors and Seniors. Still there existed the feeling of longing to be an upper classman. Almost like a dream come true, they found themselves in the fall of AIS, already high Iuniors. Before they knew it they were sophisticated Seniors, and their last year in high school was packed with interesting activities and experiences. The Seniors were thrilled by the prospect of graduation. Nevertheless, there were many wistful sighs as they recalled those four happy years which were gone never to return. And the Villian Still Pursued Her -Wilbur Reine, Dot Martin, and Pete Slusser in the prize-winning Senior skit. 21 GILBERT LARRY BAUER BAZZANO Varsity Football B-C Basketball A Track Golf Block S Block S Boys' Glee ROSE BARBARA BRAYTON BROWN Girls' League Drama Club-V Show G. The members of this class have seen both years of war and of eace since their entrance into high school in 1943. At the be innin of their llunior year the war had been over for one month, and the class looked! forward to a happier year with most wartime restrictions lifted and the return of many school friends. The war, though being a handicap to this class, made them more observant of international life and democratic ideals. The Seniors were outstanding in activities. The Senior boys challenged the faculty men to a basketball game and were victorious with the final score being 27 to 24. One of the main events of the year was the class competition assembly in which the Seniors again came out in the lead. They presented a 30 minute skit which was entitled And the Villain Still Pursued Her. Happy Holiday was celebrated by the High Seniors taking over the places of the teachers. Five High Seniors impersonated Mr, Duey, Mrs. Yost, Mrs. Rothert, Mr. Trussell, and Mr. Rankin. There was also a Senior Penalty Board con- sisting of three High Senior boys and three High Senior girls. The board took care of any lower classmen who were out of order. These were only a few of the successful and memorable events which crowded their way into a year which was overflowing with happy activities. SECRETARY: June McMannis The 1947 Seniors were also outstanding in scholarship and distinguished themselves in every phase of their school careers. Although the student body will miss them and hates to see them go, it wishes them good luck and success throughout the future. Idle The We Idle Dreamers were not really very idle this year, In fact we have been stepping around gaining a more important foothold in Santa Rosa soil. Our first 'imajor engagement was the sponsoring of the Freshman Reception which was the first dance of the year and a huge success. Our second important feat came when we won the Freshman- Sophomore Brawl. These two main events were made successful under the leadership of our fall offiicers: Donald Clark, president, fContinued on the next pagej 45 Dreamers Sophs Nancy Garret, vice-president: Shirley Winkler, secretary, and Ione Pedersen, treasurer. We elected Yvonne Michie to be our spring president. The other offices were filled by Mickey Sullivan, vice-president: Iudith Carithers, secretary, and Dolores Selby, treas- urer. All of our ofllcers proved excellent in guiding us through a very eventful year. We, the new Iuniors, are now looking toward new fields to conquer when school begins in the fall. Spring Oflicers. The Santa Rosa High School orchestra had a very successful year with Mr. Josef Walter directing. Among other things they provided music for the Christmas Play and the operetta, The Fortune Teller. Several members of both the orchestra and band were selectd for first chair posi- tions at the Vallejo Music Festival, and the entire orchestra travelled to Stockton on May 3 to play at the annual high school music festival Where they placed third in the competition. Mr. Josef Walter At the close of this school year Mr. Josef Walter completed his twenty-first year as director of Santa Rosas orchestra and band. Since he came to Santa Rosa in 1926, Mr. Walter has labored long and hard to turn out many successful musical groups as well as accomplished student musicians. The band added color and interest to all our football games with its music and stunts: it also provided a pep band for the basketball games and several rallies. Highlight of the year came when it travelled to San Francisco to play at the annual Shrine East-West football classic at Kezar Stadium. Jackie Fraser, Drum Majorette Jackie Fraser, this year's Drum Majorette, did a very good job. She was a credit to the band on its many appearances throughout the year. Jackie is new at our school, but we all feel as though she is an old friend already. The oflicers of the band this year are pictured at the right. Top Row: G. Klein, G. LeRoy, D. LaFranChi, T. They won a first place award for their fine per- formance in the Armistice Day Parade at Petaluma. Later in the year they participated in the Shrine Game on New Year's Day at San Francisco. After the basketball season started they performed before large crowds on the home courts. The last basketball game of the season was the Senior-Faculty game when the girls put on a magnificent showing at the half-time period. As a social activity they sponsored the Spring Sport Dance. Other activities were in the form of numerous sales to raise funds for their treasury. They sold cookies in the halls at noon, Varsity Vics and miniature Panthers around school, pom-poms, and pro- grams at the games. The girls elected five officers to lead them for the year. They were Elizabeth Shand, president: Nancy Garret, vice-president: Elizabeth Walland, secretary: Bernice Barnett, manager: and Diane Minney, treasurer, The faculty advisers were Miss Anderson and Mr. Walter. The last scheduled activity of the year was an ap- pearance at the Annual Horseman's Parade held by the Sonoma County Riding Club. Pictured at the right are the Drum Corps girls. Christmas Program HThe Lost Penny was a ballet which constituted the larger part of the Christmas Pro- gram. The dancing was done by the girls from Miss Turner's dancing classes. 'AThe Lost Penny was the story of a little girl Uoanne Tuttlel who, moved to pity by a poor beggar iYvonne Michiel, decided to give him her penny. Before her deed was accomplished, she lost her penny and searched in vain for it. The penny was found by little elves who wanted it for selfish reasons, but they returned it after having been influenced by fairies, The girl and the beggar were overjoyed to find that the penny had turned into two gold pieces. Those in the above picture are QL-RJ D. Dashwander, B. Dashwander, A. Kannolt, Tuttle, Y. Nlichie, Henderson, M. johnson, and A. Trowbridge. The choir, under Miss Cochrane's able direction, added a festive note to the Christmas spirit by singing Christmas hymns that we all loved. They brightened the stage by having a small revolving stage with religious tableaux in the center. Those in the above tableau are il.-Rl B. Winkler, G. Walker, and G. Hopkins. The Orchestra also played to an appreciative audience. Under the direction of Mr. Walter, they were truly a credit to the school. 60 The Fortune The Operetta dealt with two girls, Irma fa Balle- rinaj and Musette fa gyp- syl, who resembled each other, and two men, the Count and Fresco. The Count wished to restore his estate by marriage to an heiress. Fresco arranged the marriage, but lrma's twin brother, Fedor, deserted his camp: so she took his place. Musette was used as a sub- stitute for Irma to trick the Count. After many confus- ing interruptions a happy ending was achieved. The entire cast of Orchestra, Singing, and Dancing students enjoyed giving THE FORTUNE TELLER as much as the au- dience enjoyed seeing and hear- ing it. Part of the cas: of the operetm was made up of the following young singers and actors: E. Canevari, F. Callison, P. Lover, VI. Cutter, B. Thompson, O. Holmoe, C. Lawson, D. Bean, Y. Michie, B. Boyce. They were kept busy in their desires to please everyone. This, we know, is impossible, but the Girls' League clidn't know what impossible meant. They supplied us with fall and spring dances, several Girls' League assemblies, a Girls' Iinx, a Mothers' Day Tea, and a Tribute Assembly for the girl graduates. Besides this they collected gifts for the girls at Los Guilicos School, gave a pot-luck dinner for the Tamalpais Girls' League, and spoke on the school radio show. They also had a committee of girls who made it their policy to get better acquainted with newcomers in the school. It was absolutely true that the Girls' League led the school in spirit, pep, and success during the year. The Girls' League officers: QL-RJ P. Deifenbaugh, vice- presiclentg P. Becker, secretaryg J. Tuttleg A. Said, presidentg G. Cassani, L. Biaqi, S. Strong, N. Winans, j. Podstata, and A. Dear Ruth, heralded by many as the greatest performance of Santa Rosa High, was presented with ease by a brilliant cast, under the superb direction of Mr. Glen G. Guymon. Hundreds had to be turned away from the two scheduled performances. As a result a third performance was held-ample proof of the excellence of the play. The curtain rose to reveal a set so breath-taking that the audi- ence broke into spontaneous applause, and an immediate laugh was gained by Iackie Fraser who made her entrance as the colored maid. A hard-working pqoduction staff and many co-operative citizens were greatly responsible for the success of the play. Music provided by Barney Wilen's band and vocalists Phyllis Holland and Ed Ven- turi carried the theme of the play throughout. Special arrangements of Love Letters and Bill, which was written for the occasion, were presented at intermissions. The novel programs in the form of air mail letters brought many favorable comments and helped to add to the atmosphere. When the curtain fell on the first performance the enthusiastic audience demanded seven curtain calls from the cast. pronouncing the play a hit from the moment of its beginning to the end of its surprise curtain calls, In the scene below are R. An initiation dinner, the invitational Mardi Gras, the June picnic, bowling parties, and a radio pro- gram were among the club's activities. The club's major project was the adoption of a French high school of 330 pupils. Members collected S200 for sup- port of the school in addition to sending 230 pounds of cloth- ing, school supplies and food. The money was raised by sell- ing pencils, ginger-bread, and pom-poms, and by decorating for three dances and sponsoring Hello Day. Next was State Speech Contest in which Santa Rosa won the sweepstakes at both northern and southern Cali- fornia meets. Beverly Pfister and Pete Slusser then attended the National Contest at St. Louis. Beverly took fourth in dramag Pete won fourth in original oratory and was a finalist in drama. This record tied Santa Rosa with two other schools for top national honors. Also thirty-six public service programs have been given during the year. Trips to San Francisco to see State of the Union and Henry V, and other social activities too numerous to mention, rounded out the year. 70 Top Row: L. Peterson, C. Glover, I. Scott, M. Metzgus, J. Spanish Club The Spanish language is of special importance to Americans because it is the tongue of the peoples of the greater part of the Western Hemisphere. For that reason, the aims of the Spanish Club, to foster interest in the rich cultural heritage behind the language and to de- velop an understanding of the Spanish speaking peoples of the Americas, are to be com- mended. The region surrounding Santa Rosa is particularly full of historical landmarks connected with the Spanish and Mexican regimes in California. Therefore, the visiting of such places as The Old Adobe, General Vallejo's home, Sonoma Mission, and the Blue Wing Inn has made up a large part of the club's program this year, The organization also produced an interesting program for the high school radio series on KSRO. Participating were Helen Avery, Laur ne Cole, Marian Fulgham, Ianice Martin, Ioan Miner, Janice Rathbone, Pat Rose, Rita Shipp, and Lila Lee Washburn. The group has ex- tensive plans for the future. President for this year was Marilyn Ietfery. Betty Adams acted as vice-president, and Yvonne Michie filled the office of secretary-trensurer. Carol Riley was chairman of the com- mittee in charge of drafting a constitution. Miss Irene Scott and Mr. Mark Aiken were ad- visers for the group. Pictured are Spanish Club officers Y. Michie, C. New among our clubs this year is a small but active organization known as the S. D. F. Club. The name stands for the ideals of the group-Service, Discussion and Fellowship. The club was formed last fall under the sponsorship of Mr. Rankin. It now fills a long-felt need for a group where boys interested in international affairs might exchange views and broaden their ideas. The organization holds monthly dinner meetings at members' homes where dis- cussions of current problems are carried on. They have had several guest speakers this semes- ter. The club is open to boys of the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. An interest in cur- rent affairs and a willingness to work in support of the club's service projects are the require- ments for membership. While the spring and much of the fall semester were consumed in organization, the club shows great promise as an active service group. Among the things they are working on is a project to give radios to a children's hospital. They conducted a Coca-Cola sale at the Faculty-Senior basketball game as a fund rais'ng project. The members acted as messengers at the Hospital District Forum last March. The club also put on a forum program as a part of the high school radio series. Extensive plans for the future are being made, and the S. D. F. promises to become one of our most active organizations in the school. Officers: B. McKee, J. McDougall V Junior Red Cross Spring and fall officers: B. Thompson, J. Henderson, A. Yee, J. Tuttle, M. Floyd. The Junior Red Cross succeeded in making its presence well-known this year. Its an- nual roll call collection totaled Sl36.88, and it had many other activities. Its members made holiday menu covers, cross-word puzzles, joke books, and Christmas tree ornaments for hospitals. With the help of the students the Red Cross packed and shipped sixty-five gift boxes for the school children of war-ravaged countries. The fall term officers were B. Thompson, president, A. Yee, vice-president, and Hen- derson, secretary. Officers for the spring semester were Henderson, president, M. Floyd, vice-president, and Tuttle, secretary. Fellers, president, P. Acuff, secretary, R. Loop, editor of the Laureate. The Laurean Club is functioning again after an enforced rest due to War- time restrictions on printing. The purpose of the club is to encourage and sustain interest in the writ- ing of good poetry and prose and to seek recognition for original writings by means of an annual publication called the Laureate and by competition in various contests. The club has fulfilled its purpose this semester, in that meetings have been held during which much good work has been done, and in that some writings have been sent to the English Teacher's Association of Northern California, in hope of publication. Among the poems sent were City of Death by Larry Blackwell, A Letter by Barbara Lee Read, A Wish by Norman Fellers, and A Magician's Life by Howard Lamb. Also submitted were two prose selections: i'Summer Fantasy by Barbara Lee Read and Maestoso by Rosalie Loop. Barbara Read and Norman Fellers have had poems accepted for publication in the State Anthology of Poetry. By means of this competition the members of the Laurean Club gain an appreciation of good writing and learn the difference between good and me- diocre work. The group has fulfilled this purpose admirably Linder the direc- tion of Miss Katharyn Godward and Miss Docia Patchett during the past year. The club sold programs and hot dogs at games and gave a program at the Los Guilucos School for Girls. ln addition, the girls served at all the dinners of the American Association of University Women and made Easter menu covers and birthday cards for the patients at the County Hospital. The group also distributed flowers to the faculty members on May Day. The Ra Ravas has also co-operated extensively with the Junior Red Cross chapter in this school in the latter's program to aid our adopted Dutch school. The Santa Rosa chapter, instituted in 1933, is one of three chapters. The other two are in Sonoma and San Rafael. The area council is the co-ordinat- ing body of the three chapters. Lo c al members of the council are Dortha Simonini, secretary, and Nancy Winans, treasurer. This council determines the general policy of the organization and plans the area conventions to which the three chapters alternately play host. At these conventions the year's work is outlined and a formal initiation and installation of officers takes place. Presiding over the Santa Rosa chapter during the fall semester was Doro- thy Meeker, with Sue Ann Strong as vice-president and Priscilla Deffenbaugh as secretary. Glenise Pickwell was treasurer, and Nancy Winans and Janice Wolff were yell leaders. The president for the spring semester was Sue Ann Strong. Mary Lessard served as vice-president, Jo Ann Mast as secretary and Janice Wolff as treas- urer. Yell leaders were Yvonne Johnson and Dorothy Meeker. Top Row: A. Boynton, D. Si- monini, N. Winans, J. Under President June Fox's leadership, the Christmas play tableaux were sponsored, arranged and costumed entirely by the Glee Club members, The Philomel Choir, Santa Rosa High Schools popular all girl singing group, is made up of former members of the Girls' Glee Club, lt is the most active of the singing groups. From it come the soloists for school programs and for local organizations. lts members are important in the makeup of many smaller singing groups, and they assist the other music divisions in their projects and activities. Among their many varied activities were three outstanding events this past year. The beautiful singing by the choir members in the Christmas Pro- gram, the melodious chorus work in the 'operetta, The Fortune Teller, and their excellent ensemble work in the Sonoma County Choral Festival were a credit to the group and its director, Miss Helen Cochrane. The diligent coaching of jim Underhill and the steady efforts of the varsity men brought the Santa Rosa Panthers undefeated through the 1946 football season and gained them the North Bay League Championship. fhe outstanding players of the season were Wilbiir R:ine, Steve Mayer, and Dick Read. Wilbur Reine re- ceived the coveted Blanket Award. Mayer and Read were elected co-captains. The Panthers went into battle against tried and powerful teams, coming close to defeat only once when they battled to a O to 0 tie with Vallejo. During the fi:st quarter of this thriller, Santa Rosa received the ball on their own 20 yard line and carried it all the way to the Vallejo 5 yard line before a Panther fumble was recovered by Vallejo. The game was nip-and-tuck far into the fourth quarter when Vallejo took the ball on their 10 yard line and marched to Santa Rosa's 4 yard line where the Panthers dug in until the game ended. At the start of the season the Panthers overwhelmed Analy in a practice game during which many new players learned tactics which proved successful in later games. Next in the league opener the ferocious Panthers scratched and clawed the Tamalpais Indians into sub- mission during the second half. Playing before a very large crowd the Santa Rosa eleven emerged victorious over the Napa Indians. One of the best plays of the year was first introduced in thia game when Steve Mayer carried the ball around right end dodging no one, taking with him whoever was in his path. Next on the list of Panther victims were the San Rafael Bulldogs who were subjected to an overwhelming defeat of 46 to O. ln the second game of the season with Analy the Tigers held our varsity men down in the first half, but after a few encouraging words from Coach Underhill our men walked down the field to score a Z6 to 0 victory over the Blue and White. Since Santa Rosa was at the top of the league, the Petaluma Trojans tried every new play imaginable in an attempt to defeat us in our last league game of the season. Our men were stunned for a short time, but they came to in plenty of time to defeat the Trojans with a score of 26 to 7. N. B. L. Basketball The Santa Rosa A basketball team finished the year with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. The varsity was exellent when Usharpn and helpless when dull. Several of the games saw brilliant playing on the part of the Panther cagers. The team started the season with a bang by winning both games from Petaluma. The re- maining games saw the Panther quintet with neither fire nor drive go down to defeat enough times to keep them out of the winning for the league championship. Del Querra takes one off B. Under the direction of Coach Jim Dardis the Panther lightweights fought their way through a really successful season by tying with Napa for the North Bay League champion- ship. Out of seventeen starts the Panther Bees came out on top by winning fifteen. The victories of the Bee quintet were primarily the result of excellent teamwork through- out the season. However, some members of the team were outstanding. Captain Jorgensen proved an inspiration to his teammates all season. The leading scorers were Bill Noonan, Mickey Sullivan, George Storti, Dave Jorgensen, and Larry Bazzano. Jerry Maghetti, John Larsen, and Joe Hotle were very good on defense. The first league game against Petaluma started slowly, but the boys got into high gear in thehthird quarter and piled up a good lead, making it possible for all the reserves to get in t e game. The San Rafael game was close and tricky until the last quarter when Santa Rosa out- smarted their defense and went in for several easy shots. The brilliant playing of Noonan, Sullivan, and Maghetti assured a Panther victory. ln the game with Analy the Panther quintet took the lead at the beginning of the con- test, although they found it difficult playing on Analy's small floor. For practice the team used a man-for-man defense in this game. The Tamalpais game was marked by the inability of either team to break through the other team's defense with any regularity. The game was nip-and-tuck all the way, giving neither team confidence in victory. Our defense against Vallejo was outstanding, making it difficult for the Apaches to get close-in shots. Although they were forced to shoot from far out, the Vallejans sank several baskets. It was a close game until the last three or four minutes when the Panthers really put on steam to make the winning points. ln the Napa game only two or three point: seoarated the teams throughout. The teams were very evenly matched. When there were only twenty-four seconds to go, Santa Rosa trailed by one point: then Bill Noonan broke in for a set-up to put us one point in the lead. During the twelve remaining seconds Townsend of Napa intercepted a Santa Rosa pass and scored the winning basket for the lndians. ln the last league game with Petaluma our boys scored consistently during the whole game. Storti was high point man. All the Santa Rosa reserves were again able to play in this game and thus gain valuable experience for next year. 'ghty Q' QQ X fe? N?-7 0 5 fe-gn? Having played only one previous league game the Cees lost a close game to San Rafael when they met for their first tussle of the season on the Bulldogs court. At the end of the season they played San Rafael again on our own court. The next meet was a four-way meet with Analy, Petaluma, and Santa Rosa competing. This time the team came through with flying colors piling up enough points to defeat all three schools, Next came Vallejo. The determination of our team brought us through by the skin of our teeth, the meet being decided by the relay. Then we invaded Sebastopol defeating them by a comfortable margin. One of the big events of the season was when Coach Rey- nolds picked eighteen boys to travel to the Davis Invitational where we made a good showing. Meeting with San Rafael and Tam in a repeat meet we ran away with top honors. 'After a hard battle we captured the Sonoma County meet which was held at Analy. Last but not least came the League finals. As usual the first and second teams were picked. The Seniors won over the Juniors, while the Sophornores beat the little Freshmen. For the championship game the Seniors tangled with the Sophomores to beat them by a close margin. Following basketball came speedball which was played until the middle of March. The Seniors beat the Juniors in both games again, and the Sophs won over the Fresh- man first team but lost to their second team. Probably the most favored game of the season was baseball. This was played during the spring. As usual the various teams were picked, and then play-offs were held. Nancy swings at the ball. 107 Sports The last sport of the year is volleyball. Due to the fact that school was almost over when this sport commenced it was not played very long. Again the different teams were picked by the Physical Eduaction teachers. After this the games were played, and the winners were found. The big event of the year for the G. A, A. members was the annual Sonoma County playday. lt was held April 26. On this day students from many of the different surrounding schools came to attend the big event. It has been the custom for many years to hold this county play- day in Santa Rosa. The Freshman and Sophomore girls stayed at the high school, while the Juniors and Seniors made their way to the Junior College.
