VARSITY FCDOTBALL The Cardinal football season this year was considered the most successful season in three years. Although the boys did not walk off with all the honors, they lifted the score of victories above that of the I936 season. The Santa Paula team started the season otf with a bang by defeating the champion Ventura squad with a 7-6 score. thus distinguishing themselves as the only county team to defeat the champions. This was followed by a I3-6 victory over the Oxnard Yellow Jackets. Following these two victories, which started the rumor of League :hampionship about the school, the team hit a slump and were defeated in three consecutive games by Fillmore, -ancaster, and Oxnard, respectively. The scores of these games, however, were very close. aj! 4 ' ii 5 ,. .. .. ' 4 iii., ,, U M y ff N ,. . , V 'B I . ,A y it V , E ln a non-League game the Cards then defeated the highly ballyhooed Carpinte- ria eleven by a surprising score of 34-I3. Following this game, the Pirate prep squad, out for blood, over their last defeat suffered at the home of the Cards, handed our boys a dishearts ening defeat consisting of four Ventura touchdowns to S. P.'s none.

The two honored by positions ot the tirst string county varsity were: Ed Yar- brough. taclcle, and Charlie lno, guard. Those on the second string were: Joe Ratterty. end, Jaclc Ler- cari, quarterback. and Clifford Gartrell, left halt. Warren McPhersen, guard, and Bob Jaclcson, cen- ter, were given honorable mention.
