TQACK 'llhe varsity traclcmen began the season hy defeating 'l'hacher hy an overwhelming score for the first time in three years. The next week, Coach Priehe entered Serey, hlurr, WValden, and Corral in the medley relay at Long Beach. 'llhis team won the event and a beautiful trophy. The Cards felt victory in dual meets with Fill- more and Ventura on successive weel:-ends. Santa Paula won the Russell cup meet at Carpenteria with Serey taking firsts in the century and furlongg Fortress victorious in the high and low hurdles, and XValden winning the half-mile. A relay team com- posed of Xlurr, liortress, Kloore, and Serey won a fast race. At the Santa Nlaria invitational meet, Santa Paula, lacking six sure point-winners, met tough competition to he outscored. During spring vacation, the Santa Paula trackmen were de- feated hy Muir Tech. Serey was second to the Tech colored ace. while lValden and Fletcher ran the half-mile first and second, re- spectively, in the fast times of 222.7 and 2:-l. Corral won the mile, and Robinson took the shot put with little competition. Santa Paula displayed a full team strength lvy taking seven first places, four second places, three third places, and three fourth places to win the county meet at Oxnard for the first time in three years. The only events in which the Cards failed to place were the foothall throw and the pole vault. F451 OZ'.Pr-'Om Lnbwbn-L BASKETBALL The fact that the varsity basketball record contrasts unpleas- antly with that of the football season does not mean that Santa Paula was not enthusiastic. Getting started late in the season, the team was short of practice when the Ventura game opened the season. The Cardinals were defeated 22-26 by Ventura, and 45-35 by Santa Barbara, but downed Fillmore, 22-27. Following this, the Santa Paula boys defeated the highly press-agented Oxnard Yellow- jackets 28-17. In the second round, the Ventura outfit again de- feated the Cards, and Santa Barbara again outclassed Santa Paula to the tune of 39-7. After losing a tough battle to Fillmore 22-27, the Cards again defeated the Oxnard Yellowjackets 19-20, to place fourth in the league standings. Despite the Cards' failure to register a string of victories, the fans did not lose interest. Graduation this June robs Santa Paula of most of its varsity basketball men. Among the senior lettermen leaving school are: Roy Wilson, Bob Pena, John Burleson, John Inglis, Nemer hlurr, and Clarence Kirk. Only three junior members of the squad will return for com- petition next season. They are: Robert Buckner, Joe Herrera, and Carl Hackwortb. Corral, Serey, and Fortress won their favorite races, while Klurr placed second, and Bob Pena took third in the 4+0 dashg Fletcher ran third in the half-mile, hloore placed second in the 220: Renfro finished fourth in the mile run, and illartel came in fourth in the low hurdles. 'lihe day after the county meet, a team composed of Serey, Kloore, Fletcher, Corral, Fortress, and hlurr won the high school division at the Santa Barbara open track meet. Serey, llloore, and Hlurr took second, third, and fourth, respectively, in the 100-yard dash. Fortress won the loiv hurdles. Serey running the l00, lxloore the 220, Fletcher the 440, and Corral the 880, in the medley relay, finished second place. Santa Paula won the league meet which was similar to the county trackfest. 'lihe following week at the divisional track meet, the Cards hodaciously outscored the other teams, winning 395 points, with Santa Barbara their closest rival. Serey, who won the I00 and 220 in fast times, was entered in the Southern California meet with Fortress, who also made fast times in the high and low har- riers. Corral and Rohinson, placing second in their respective events, entered this meet. hloore and hlurr ran the relay with Serey and Fortress to hecome eligihle for the Southern California meet.
