Samohi's Athletic Department has a reputation as one of the finest in CIF, and this year's field of teams was no exception. Starting off with football, Sa- mohi went undefeated until the final game of the season, and that was a first round playoff loss to Long Beach Poly. Then the soccer team finished third in the toughest league of 4-A CIF soccer. The two teams that finished ahead of them played each other in the 4-A finals. For the first time in six years the Varsity Boys' Basketball team made it to the 3-A CIF playoffs. Samohi went to Troy High School in Fullerton, to gain the 32nd spot in the playoffs, which they did, scoring a 64-57 victory. Then in their second playoff game Samohi had to play the number one seeded team in the tournament, Downey High, and lost in a close battle 76-69. When the end of the baseball season comes around, this year's team expects to be right in the thick of the playoffs. As catcher John Vasak commented, We are the team to beat for the title. As for Girls, Swimming, Track, Golf, and Boys' Tennis, their respective coaches feel they will be well represented in CIF corn- petition. 4 I ! , . Ag., W .,', Q, I 0 ' .xl ,,.,, Q ., 1 57

Split End Ricky Williams gets caught in the middle of North Torrance defenders. Before the start of the 1977 football sea- son, people thought the gridders lost a lot when their two All-CIF players graduated the year before. New Head Coach Mike Gris- wold thought this year's team might be even better than the 10-2 team of last year. So starting off the season, Samo played perennial powerhouse Loyola High School and promptly took the game to them with a 22-19 victory. Samo promptly reeled off eight more victories in a row including a 22-14 victory over arch rival West Torrance. Three year starting quarterback Kevin Rey- nolds passed for 200 yards and sophomore tailback senation Derrick Singelton gain 149 yards on the ground. Finishing league play with a 9-0 record and a first place finish in the Coastal Con- ference, Samo was matched up against Long fcontinued on page 615 Scott Carni C485 tries to avoid a tackler.
