A world full of changes Cesar Chavez speaking for Proposition 14 and Gary Famillan 1976 was a ,bicentennial year. an Olympic year. and an election year. Although the first two affect- ed the Samohi masses. the last will have the most impact. New leaders were chosen to lead the country, state. and community. In one of the closest races in presidential history. Jimmy Carter. the peanut grower from Plains, Georgia. defeated incumbent President Gerald Ford for the White House seat. The election was too close for most pollsters to call: even the networks had trouble on election night deciding who had what state in the electoral college. ln the election for U.S. Senator for California. Senator John Tunney was beaten by 70-year old retired San Francisco State College President S.l. Hayakawa. Republican, Robert K. Dornan was vic- torious in the 27th Congressional district over Democrat Gary Familian in one of the dirtiest cam- paigns waged in Southern California. Agricultural. Labor. and Dog Racing initiatives went down to de- feat while the okay was given on Santa Monica's new shopping center. ln four years. this year's campus will be of age to vote and perhaps make a difference.
