as the fireworks brightened the sky above corsair field at halftime on halloween night, it was obvious that this wasn't just another homecoming. this year the traditional celebration lasted for three days and involved more students than ever before. the festivities began on wednesday, when the sophomore and junior classes pooled their talents to stage an obstacle course inthe quad. on thursday, the campus was dotted in blue and gold, as exhibitionistic seniors in clown costumes offered helium balloons for a quarter. several clubs got into the carnival atmosphere by sponsoring booths in the quad. that night, students abandoned all hope of sleep as they worked till the sun rose on their creations of chicken wire and countless paper napkins. santa monica residents pa- tiently tolerated the confusion as vikes all but took over the town in the pre-dawn. apparently some float building actually did take place that night, because while sleepy students gratefully devoured pancakes and coffee in the cafeteria friday morning, the brightly colored floats were proudly displayed in the quad. attempts at serious education were abandoned friday morn- ing as vikings struggled to stay conscious for the pep rally. the greek theatre was crowded with the loudly enthusiastic masses who enjoyed the skits and performances and waited impatiently to discover whom they had elected homecom- ing queen. homecoming 11
