Victor Viking There is only one Vikesville, U.S.A., and Samo is it! Speaking is Reuben Camacho, Samohi's exuberant Victor Viking. As mascot, Reuben sailed the turbulent Viking waters in search of his Queen. This year, without his partner Vicky, Victor occasionally found the seas to be very rough without my companion by my side. Being Victor Viking meant a lot to Reuben, Being the school mascot has enabled me to open up more to my fellow students and faculty: and most important, promote the spirit ofour school. The Pep Club came alive with renewed energy this year! The spirited students quadrupled last year's club membership: they were bigger, louder, and more de- termined than ever before. Carried forward by their boundless en- thusiasm, Pep Club members jam-packed buses to away games and filled the stands at Samohi sports events. gntldvxf, Stpuwf 4 'E' W' HUB S In the fall, they entered their spectacular rooter bus float in the Homecoming competition. and participated in Memorial Day tree planting in the Spring. Besides holding candy and baked goods sales, Pep Club advertised the book you are reading. J.V. Yell Leoders The Junior Varsity Yell Leaders added to, and shared in, the success of the entire Samohi spirit squad. The J.V.'s inspired our Junior Varsity and Sophomore teams to victory, and stirred up spirit in the stu- dent body at Friday pep rallies. The girls' joyful enthusiasm and good humor were doubtlessly responsible for the growing attendance at games and rallies. The J.V.'s were the proud and deserving recipients of the Spirit Stick in summer camp, along with the Varsity Yell Leaders. The J.V.'s plans for the future include pep rallies and halftime performances for the basketball games, and instilling spirit for the water polo matches. J.V. Miss Brenda Stratton took a firm hand with the Sergeanettes and helped them achieve their objectives of self-esteem and stricter discipline. This background was responsible for their excellence at performances, and their success at raising school spirit. The girls practiced harder and longer this year. They also worked in cooperation with the Fronts to achieve more professional routines. The Sophomores proved to be an enthusiastic, capable group and an asset to the team. Their hard work and determination paid off with a third place award at the Rosemead parade. The girls also participated in the Santa Monica El Primero parade, and marched at Magic Mountain. The girls in Sergeanettes got more out of the experience than dance routines. According to many of the girls, the most important lesson they learned was understanding. You learn to get along with all kinds of people: you make friends with people you'd never meet otherwise. Being a Sergeanette meant giving up a lot of their time to rehearse, and re- rehearse, until the routines were up to the drill team's standard of excellence. But the girls didn't mind at all. lt's worth it all when you're out there perform- ing, and you know you're doing your very best. Congratulations to the Sergeanettes for a superior season!
