NAUTILUS 1974 Without a doubt, the staff of the 1974 NAUTILUS could relate a lot of sad and strange tales. From deadlines that passed in the night to being outside Glendale High and wondering where the hell it was. There was Lane's budding romance, Ruth's job, Gary's control over the rest of the staff, Lawrence's -running commentary on the girls, Lena with Dawn at the beach, constantly, Skip helping Law- rence go 127.6 on the S.M. freeway, Mark's daily second period jaunts to the wetsuits, both Chris' playing when they shouldn't have, Patty, Patti, Kim, Sue, Betty, Cathy and Cindy for just being a bunch of Sergeantettes, John and his messenger service to and from Print Shop, Karen and Margretha keeping Ramada Inn in business, Cathy and her undying fear of having her picture taken, Rich's sports sports sports, Melissa and Mike not doing a whole lot, Phil, Cathy, Cindy and Ed the johnny come latelys, Pringle good for nothing except being in the way, and janey, ever faithful to Iohn. This will be one year and one yearbook that will not easily be forgotten by the people that have built it. VVe've stayed up late to make deadlines, and we've stayed up late to miss them, we've gone from San Diego to Santa Bar- bara, and almost to Fresno following the school and its activities. I But looking at the book in a realistic sense, its easy to see that putting together a yearbook isn't an easy task. In September, many of the staff had never worked on a yearbook before, and were literally starting bl-ind. But the days, weeks, and months of pressure and confusion event- ually passed, and the staff became finely tuned and highly skilled at what they were doing. So as the deadlines passed, the 1974 Nautilus went from film, pages and blank copy sheete to 2.16 pages of creative fountain and individuality. Editor-in-Chief . isa., ... The Samohi SOPHOMORE TRACK This years multi-talented sophomore track team sported a record of 3-2-1 in the tough Bay League. This sophomore team is 'mentally' the toughest team I've ever coached, stated Coach Kerry. Opening their season against Centennial they responded with a 52-47 victory. This was truly a team victory, reflected Coach Kerry. Outstanding performances were credited to miler Ralph Cardenas, Bill Haldeman and Bernard Fitchpatrick. In the next meet the sophomores were beaten 72.Vz-45Vz by West Torrance to even their Bay record to 1-1. We were just outclassed by a better team, replied Coach Vincent. Top marks were turned in by Bernard Fitchpatrick in the 440, Bill Haldeman in the 880, Ralph Cardenas in the mile, Paullo Kuendig in the two mile and Fitchpatrick in the high jump. In their second home meet of the year, the sophs encountered a tough Palos Verdes team loosing 44-74 and came back the next week smashing South Torrance 68-41 to even their record to 2-2 in Bay League. This Sophomore team has just been super all season, stated Coach Kerry. Robert Malanga was outstanding as he was victorious in the 100, 220, and a member of the winning 440 relay team. Other outstanding members of this years team included Bill Messenger, Tom Oshimo, John Mateer, Leslie Mandic, and Ken Ford. The year 1973-1974 saw many new and different things about and around the SAMOHI. First and foremost was Mr. Larry Knuth, the third adviser in as many years. Next came the printing operation, which finally permitted readers to see real pictures instead of black and gray blurs. But these were incidental to the actual production of the paper. When it all hit the fan, it came down to the individual reporters writing the stories that made the SAMOHI the award-winning paper that it is and had been since 1912. Q The first issue back in September was nothing to brag about, due to the fact that no one knew what anyone else was doing. Even though we managed to lose about half the material on the way to the SMC print shop, we never cut back to an undersize paperp indeed, several times during the year we increased the size to accommodate all we had to say. For the seniors on the staff, this was one year not easily forgotten. For the underclassmen, it will undoubtedly be eclipsed by their own senior year. Even so, the arguments, fights, triumphs, romances, awards, foul-ups and generally good and bad times that were perpetrated by individuals and shared by the staff will be forever etched upon everyone's mind.
